    Oh, Bev Oda!

In Dion's defense on that, the entire Canadian delegation was at the Intercontinental (which is connected to the conference center by an underground tunnel). They had daily briefing meetings at 7am there. As the chair of the convention, he basically had to stay 'till midnight or later many nights a week and be back in the Intercontinental before 7am the next morning. Barring his living in downtown montreal, the back and forth would be a huge pain in the ass when you're only getting 4-5 hours of possible sleeping time each night. No excuses for the limo. If Pettigrew can get around using the metro, so can Dion.
  2. Can't believe that Murray put in 3 players who didn't have a single point on the night between them to go in the shootout. I know they were the guys from the Edmonton game but c'mon! Go with the hot hands!
  3. here's the breakdown (bear in mind the chef is vietnamese, so there's a steady streak of that fused into it): Dish 1: 5 types of sashimi marinated in a sesame dressing with black sesame seeds. Dish 2: Cucumber-rolled maki with tuna, salmon, asparagus, tempura flakes, etc. Dish 3: A cross between vietnamese springroll and a maki (with rice paper) with shrimp, lobster, mandarin orange, etc. Dish 4: Baked marinated red snapper on a bed of warm "salad" (seaweed, enoki mushrooms, various other veg) and rice. The only cooked dish Dish 5: Sushi and Maki platter. An assortment of stuff all, delicious. Each one had its own sauce, except the requisite soy for the last dish. Only thing I would have like would be a small sweet dish to close it out. Of course you could probably get the same quantity of food for the same price or less at other sushi restos but this guy is hot shit. Probably considered #1 or #2 in the city for "nouveau" japanese.
  4. Tri Express Got to go check this place out the other day and got the 5-course Omakase (japanese "suggestions du chef") by the former chef at Kaizen and Treehouse. 41 bucks with tax, meaning that dinner for 2 with green tea (no license there) and over 15% tip is under 100 bucks. Not bad for some pretty damn nice sushi! Here's a review
  5. I'd like to see it, but not in round 1. I'd rather them get some steam going with a quick series agianst Tampa or something (though we saw what that got us last year).
  6. DO the potential playoff pairings that we're seeing now worry anyone else? It's not looking like the Sens have much of a shot at catching Buffalo, which probably relegates us to 4th or 5th in the conference. Judging by the play now, it's looking like we might be stuck against the Pens or the Devils (if the Pens stay hot), neither of which sound like good 1st round matchups for us! Probably the #1 playoff goalie in the league, or the hottest team in the league. I know it's early yet, but barring a collapse by either the sens, pens or devils, it's looking like that's the way things will play out.
  7. www.flightcenter.ca they've got good holiday fares. I see one right now to Mazatlan, MX (apparently a crazy fun place) for 212+tax leaving on the 21st.

    St. Viateur Bagels

in a fit of procrastination, I decided to celebrate my little dining utopia of Mile End by sharing some of its secrets with you. Here you have it... [iMAGE]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y204/embassyinternational/mile_end.jpg[/iMAGE] LEGEND: A- St. Viateur Bagel #1 (the main branch) B- Eurodeli. Borscht and the best pierogies ever. C- Club Social. My daily coffee fix. As italian as it gets. D- Cafe Olympico. "The" Mile End cafe. Go here to meet all the hip montrealers. E- St. Viateur Bagel #2 F- Fairmount Bagel G- My house! [H- I forgot to include it, but on the north side of St. Viateur between Clark and St. Laurent is Jardin du Cari, where you get fantastic roti/curry from the islands for real cheap!]

    St. Viateur Bagels

False. St. Viateur is owned by Joe Bagel (that's how everyone calls him). THey have 2 shops on St. Viateur, the main one with all the trimmings and another one near the corner of St. Urbain that's more of a "factory" to produce for restos and whatnot. Fairmount is owned by other people and their bagels taste different. We've had taste-offs. I'm partial to the st. v bagels myself, though both do handily in a pinch.
  11. That's the only ethical thing one could do. It's a bit like being a teacher who is asked to teach something they strongly disagree with. Practically impossible to do it genuinely.
  12. here's the Montreal show in mp3 for anyone interested. Will do a FLAC torrent later and post it in the appropriate forum. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CD3BKRCW
  13. just caught a killer V5 show in Montreal. Standing room only at Sala Rossa (maybe 200-250). Another fantastic performance.
  14. You can even do onstage taping with vandermark, so if you have some omni caps for your mics, this is a great chance!
  15. THe Constantines are doing a Tribute to Neil Young here next week with a bunch of other players. THey're called "Horsey Craze" or something like that and are basically the house band for the night. Should be fun!
  16. I'd buy a ticket if M.Ward is still opening, but there's no clear info on that. THeatre st. denis, pretty cool. Only space for about 750 or so I think. This will probably sell out quick. Edit; It appears they have 2 theatres there, and one holds about 2000. I guess that would be the one.
  17. well, that's why I said it might work better in philosophy than in politics (though Habermas doesn't really see it that way). However, I totally see where you're coming from. Like SM mentioned, Chomsky (on Propaganda) suggests that mainstream media basically works under the same premise that you're using Dirtybird. THat the "bewildered herd" (or your Joe Canadian), isn't with-it enough to make the right decisions based on reasoned thinking. Therefore, propaganda is replaced by balanced media take care of that problem. (http://www.quotes2u.com/histdocs/propaganda.htm) I prefer to hold a higher view of human agency, otherwise I wouldn't be able to get up in the morning. Perhaps we can agree that contemporary politics and the media that supports it have led many of us to thinking in this reactionary, knee-jerk way, but I'd like to hope that we have the agency (though not always the awareness) needed to change that. Paulo Freire's concept of "Conscientization" tries to do that, for example, through education. Sorry for the ramblings. Working with a lot of this theory for my comprehensive exams at the very moment, and sometimes it's more fun to talk about them on a messageboard than in a long formal paper!
  18. I suppose that depends on whose social theory you subscribe to. Jurgen Habermas (as I've read him) would likely be dead against smear ads, arguing that the only way that we can accomplish much is by working toward "communicative action", which doesn't seek to dominate your interlocuter, but instead engage in reasoned debate (the ideal speech act). This would instead fall under the category of dramaturgical action, which doesn't intend to actually engage in any debate at all. It's merely for public display to raise our own public image. Of course, that idea plays well in philosophy and critical theory, but perhaps less well in politics.
  19. Wouldn't mind getting a copy of this if anyone records it (I haven't got a TV). I was at the show with friends and it would make a good gift.
  20. Harper in this letter is even out of step with his evangelical constituency nowadays (funny how a little bit of time can make a difference), which has started, in spite of itself, to take all of this seriously. It'd be a tough gig these days, being Stephen Harper. Gotta wish him luck. There's a more detailed write up on it quoting his description of how Kyoto is designed to suck up the wealth of the rich and give it to the poor. I wish this had been picked up by more news sources. Gives a better idea of what a steaming pile of excrement Harper is.
  21. Hadji and Dan Boeckner are playing together here in montreal, so I'd be surprised if the WP "split" is permanent.
  22. Vandermark is one of my all-time favorites. I've seen him 5 or 6 times now and he's definately a "can't miss". The Vandermark 5 is one of his main bands, and they do a lot of funky (for jazz) freaky improv on acoustic/wind instruments. IT's not jamband sounding at all though. He's completely ok with taping (BradM) as long as you send him a copy. If you want to hear some challenging music that will make your head spin, go check them out. Here's a sample/bio: http://www.epitonic.com/artists/thevandermark5.html GO!
  23. I can't believe he's playing Friendship Cove in Montreal. It's a loft/apartment for some musicians. I'd be surprised if it holds 100 people.
