  1. i wonder if it'll be full by lunchtime tomorrow...
  2. Brother's got more spice than the frugal gourmet. Here's to the man rockin' that bass in his bed.
  3. get a beer bottle...not the one you put your smoke out in. A bit of beer in the bottom is alright Put some fruit in it (a piece of apple works well) Cover the top with plastic wrap poke a few holes in it. Fruit flies can get out of some holes in jar lids. Beer bottles are fairly discreet. you can put these around your home if you need to.
  4. The neck is definitely the best place to punch someone.
  5. Not at all. It depends on what people do with the quotes.

Is that all I am to you now, Dave - a whackjob?
  7. Reaching something immense? Well how about 70% of voters under the age of 40 voting? that would be immense. It would also be very diverse. How about a living wage for all Canadians...and then 10% or less of those people not working to earn above and beyond those meager means? I suppose just budding into that conversation would be strange, but I'd probably start with a joke like this: What do you get when you cross a migrant worker with an octopus? I don't know but it sure can pick tomatoes! I'd then probably spread some cheer to the guy by clinking a glass (even jerks deserve some kindness sometimes) and then conveniently be 'reminded' of red stripe and stubbies and the conversation would then begin. I'm sure the 'they're taking our jobs' would come up and then I'd say 'do you really want to pick peppers in the hot sun for $6 an hour?' Hmm...another 'immense' achievement? that relates to Racism? How about finding more ways to define the Canadian Experience. I know MY family history, and it's VERY new world - new france, upper canada, loyalist, etc. and although, aside from our aboriginal heritage, that's the essence of this country until about the 1950's. Super white. Not very culturally sensitive, but FWIW does it really have to be? Since then, there's been very little effort made to create a sense of Canadianism outside of that understudied and unproliferated history of which our country is truly rich. An end to ghettoes?
  8. Roundabouts!! 2 were installed this year in the closest town to me. I'm so amused to see people annoyed with them, because I know that someday they could save their lives and give them some peace of mind. If we were all socialized to be more aware and conscious of our actions/their consequences, there would be less of a need for rules, regulations, and social control. It could be argues that those measures have been put in place to keep us dependant on the rulemakers and the rest of the system...so we will gladly pay their salaries and put up less of a fight when things don't work out...after all, the system was designed to work properly. But I digress... I don't know that I see the good in others and perhaps I overstate that we're not reaching our potential, but we certainly won't reach anything immense if we focus on all the petty, unjust, and inhumane actions and attitudes of the past and present. So say I'm at the local redneck bar and overhear a jab at a seasonal jamaican worker. Do I scold that douchebag (maybe not through and through, but he at least has a bit of vinegar in him); or do I try to turn the joke/jab into a conversation about the best spicy rub for BBQ chicken in the grocery store (Grace Jerk Rub...thanks again Dancin' Man), comment that they've been drinking from stubbies just like us for years, and talk about how much fun reggae parties are & how similar rudeboys and cowboys are (talk out my ass to cut out some hostility so i can put some Bob Marley on the Jukebox)? "They come here for work and a safe way of life...we go there to vacation and get laid back." Who knows...maybe that's that guy's cue to go out for a spliff. I think many of the racist/'racialized' ideas stem more from socioeconomic factors than mere cultural differences. Perhaps it's just as unfair for me to generalize about poor people, but (I don't mind, and) perhaps that has more to do with said migrant worker being less 'refined' (than a beefcake bigot? sometimes, in some ways) than someone with the advantage a Canadian way of life affords. Either way, somebody's gotta pick that dumb fuck's tomatoes or chickens.
  9. abolish the stop sign. Yield is the way to go. Perhaps you're more unassuming than naive?
  10. I think much of the cause of the problem HAS been social control. I wonder what the world would be like if we let up on all forms of social control. I think in the short term it would be madness, but in time, peoples' moralsity and ethics would shine through where it is otherwise forced.
  11. (I thought that 'Sophism' remark was funny, since 'sophists' supposedly accused their opponents of being deceivers - or 'sophists') Birdy - aren't people in our culture brought up to believe that the truth is powerful and transformative? Personally, I believe that's the same as telling people they can be whatever they want when they grow up without helping kids find out what they would really like to be. Where's the photo of a mushroom cloud? Parent/godparent/helpful neighbour/awesome aunt or uncle?? These are all forms of 'teacher' In some ways, becoming a teacher to suit your own personal social control aims is a bit underhanded and creepy - even if those goals are altruistic. Maybe I should start a company called 'Iseberg' and have the logo be shaped like an iceberg field from under the water shaped like a sort of abstract Star of David. Think it'd work out for me?
  12. Funny how i see similarities between my posts here and in the YAY God thread... ...because in the past, the church did its best to stop us from believing that we have as much power as the divine while dazzling us with sacred geometry and impressive spaces in those churches/mosques/temples. I think that it doesn't have to be THIS or THAT' I like the word 'and' it's far more inclusive. In time the things that don't fit will work their way out of our lives. So really - Demolition isn't necessarily taboo.

No? Thorgnor, although I find it funny how much I pick apart some of what you say, I really do think that we have very similar desires in what we want our children (or our friends' children) to have in their world when we're gone. Changing the world for the better 'to be more inclusive'? I don't really think that we should HAVE to be more inclusive when we're making the world better...the 2 should go hand in hand. There certainly is quite a lot of money-worship going on in the world. I often think that the steadfastness that many Christians are taught about their faith will manifest itself in money issues and freedoms. Perhaps the 'mark of the beast' is our credit score...
  14. Resonant with the earth's energy? How about to let our own energies resonate properly? When that happens, we will be in HARMONY with the Earth's vibrations and the vibrations of the rest of our universe. Purely focusing on 'Mother Earth', while a nice concept is myopic at best. Some see the power of the earth to be deep, but compared to what we can do with our planet and beyond, it's shallow. If you are putting conspiracy theories aside, then sure - mother earth is all powerful, but if you're someone that doesn't then you're probably open to the concept that we are more powerful than we're 'allowed' to believe. As much as the artists' drawings of what 'The Venus Project' could have us accomplish, it seems to be more of an 'all at once' or master plan. www.thevenusproject.com I like the ideas...and the layout of the cities, giant buildings that are both amazing to look at and could be nearly perfect and requiring litle upkeep. A long way from a forest tent palace or yurts on the plains, but certainly a realistic evolution of human ingenuity and simple spirit.

i think for this discussion it is 'good place'
  16. do you have any examples of that, Mr. Mouse? I'll say it again: the words don't do the work.
  17. using more resources/materials is one of the problems we face. I'm all for tent homes, T - it's actually one of the things that I really want for myself. A great, cost effective, low impact way to build homes. Why does the solution have to be dangerous and Uncertain - a mobile life? Our civilization is not nomadic, even those of us that have to travel for work. A simpler existence would foster mobility...I know for one I hate to move as I have a bunch of stuff, but how is this crucial to this new era of sustainability/Eco-consciousness? If you're comparing these lovely dwellings to monoculture home developments, then great. I'm convinced that in time (never fast enough) we will change the way developers build homes, the way homeowners demand homes be built, and in many case change the way we choose to live. I'm a proponent of finding better ways to live more densely - for infrastructure, and for the pooling of green/park/recreation space. We're at a point where people think that high-rise living is unattractive - mostly because it's been designed as such. med-high rises are a great way to both mix land use (stores, offices, groceries on the ground floors for instance) and consolidate multi-level dwellings to save us making a large footprint. We're also at a point where urban sprawl is one of the biggest problems - culturally and environmentally - that we face in this new century. I would love to see villages of tent dwellings with thriving small economies, fresh running water, greenhouse/hydroponic and small farm agriculture thrive in little pockets all over because not only is it possible but it's low-impact and entirely sustainable. For this to work and be attractive for the masses it will take either some clever sales/marketing, or an immense shift in our civilization. It's been said somewhere that the best places for urbanized communities (amenities within walking distance, communities based on geography) to flourish is in small towns and villages. Imagine - living somewhere that you could walk to do errands, bike to any number of friends/neighbours, easily be entertained, have a relaxing afternoon in a park, and not be tied to an automobile... Large towns and most cities in Canada are downtown/suburb to a fault and it ties many people to their cars, their home, and their routine. Rural/country living is quite similar, except for those people that enjoy the company of their neighbours, and live simply so as to not need to do the same number of errands. Perhaps a complete deconstruction/reconstruction could work, but there's probably a way to not demand it occur. I appreciate the freedom we have in Canada. On the other hand, I kinda wish that somehow there would be limitations or restrictions on the WAY our communities grow. Up before out. Bike and Walking paths, transit...advantages to going downtown to shop to combat mall culture and the big box phenomenon. Many of these new 'advantages' (big box stores, more affordable suburban homes) are only seen as advantages because we're collectively being backed into a corner and bullied into making these choices. How do we create more wealth and abundance so that Canadians have the time and freedom to not have to live in a way that is harming ourselves and our future?
  18. Definitely. More evidence to prove one created it first. Recognized Registration of Copyright for the majority of authors is nonessential. However, it is what Blurry asked for. I always presume that people don't understand that registered copyright is for the most part nonessential. (That was an awesome link btw, Stoney)
  19. That was a lot simpler than I'd expected.

What's your perspective on the possibility of Utopia? I think that aiming for 'utopia' is almost impossible to achieve, while aiming for future goals that are 'utopian' to some is probably a lot easier. Small parts of the bigger picture rather than trying to make that bigger picture happen all at once.
  21. If one were to get 'official' in Canada they'd first go to SOCAN and apply for status, so that when their music got played on campus radio (or wherever else) they'd get at least a little cash. There would sit enough proof of ownership one would need. CIPO isn't necessary for a work to be copywritten, since intellectual property rights are guaranteed in Canada. From the CIPO site: "Automatic protection for Canadian and foreign works When you create a work or other subject matter protected by copyright, you will automatically have copyright protection provided that, at the time of creation, you were: a Canadian citizen or a person ordinarily resident in Canada; a citizen or subject of, or a person ordinarily resident in, a Berne Convention country, a Universal Copyright Convention country, a Rome Convention country (for sound recordings, performer's performance and communication signals only), or a country that is a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO); or a citizen or subject of, or a person ordinarily resident in any country to which the Minister has extended protection by notice in the Canada Gazette. In some cases, you would also obtain automatic copyright if your work was first published in one of the countries included among those who have signed the Berne, Universal Copyright or Rome conventions or the WTO agreement, even if you were not a citizen or subject of Canada, or of one of those countries. In short, virtually everyone living in Canada can enjoy the benefits of automatic copyright protection. In addition, Canadians are protected in most foreign countries since most belong to one or more of the international treaties — the Berne Convention or the Universal Copyright Convention, the Rome Convention or are members of the WTO. Citizens of countries which are members of those conventions enjoy the benefits of Canadian copyright law in Canada. Canada also extends protection to certain non-member countries by way of notice in the Canada Gazette. Sound recordings themselves are protected internationally under the Rome Convention and under the copyright treaties, but there is quite a variation internationally as to the nature of the protection given to sound recordings. In Canada, sound recordings enjoy a broad range of protection under the Copyright Act." Blurry: if you want to pay somebody a bunch of money to file some paperwork for you the go ahead. If these can be claimed as business expenses (if you're making money from your work or intend to) then it's probably worth your time.
  22. How could this discussion be served by a particular example that could be worked on? Well since publishing the names of the owners of companies walks a fine line between boycott lists of the racist and a privacy uproar, how about finding a way to publicize the quality/return on investment of firms that represent a wide array of cultures? Perhaps a different case would be more useful. Either way, I don't really think the discussion would be served with an example, but someone that is planning a career path to eradicate racialized events might want/have some ideas. Who's the crusader here?
