  1. I hate the way frozen meat shrinks when it's been cooked. Is there a solution for this? Sometimes buying it on sale is unavoidable...it's hard to eat 50 chicken thighs in a week. Would freezing it in water (like fish) work?
  2. I'm a proudly pro-smoking non-smoker. I've met way too many non-smokers that could use a cigarette.
  3. It's entirely unfortunate that we're bent on villifying tobacco when we're not laying the foundations for an overall healthy society. Indoor air quality, bad food, and poisoned drinking water (chlorine, fluoride) have a much bigger impact on health, as their influence in our lives is so hard to measure. Cheap furniture and paint in our homes makes us sicker than a few smokes, but burning anything and inhaling smoke isn't a healthy thing to do. Sin taxes more than pay for the costs to our health system from smoking. Big tobacco would be doing much better if they produced 'all natural' tobacco products that actually deserve a slightly higher price tag. King Size Organics? probably not gonna happen anytime soon.
  4. If there's a racially charged judgement it's about the second hand perceptions surrounding the description of judgement former. You're right - that shit ain't positive, but there still isn't anything that fits the bill more than that unfortunate phrase, which is truly sad. Using the term does not assert that the statement is historically accurate. Perhaps you mean that the usage legitimizes it, which I can unfortunately see being an acceptable understanding, but anything otherwise is putting words in someone's mouth unless that's the case in context. 'evil of evils'? How can one really rank evil? Make an argument if you really need to... ...but i really don't think you need to.
  5. I know you said you agreed with d_jango - and to clarify, I didn't mean that I'm more likely to wait it out than you would, but I also wouldn't lay the racism card on the table over an isolated euphemism. Negativity? Which negativity was that? While you mentioned difference being perpetuated through negativity, I didn't suggest being negative, only conversational or non-reactive. Are you talking about the negative essence of the phrase that a great number of people don't understand - and thus isn't in their mind at all - or the negativities that get renewed when tied to the phrase by an unassuming particpant or eavesdropper? You didn't really mention any specific negativity, you just commented that it exists - which is quite different. Realistically, going back and forth about this - is way too distracting from the need to find a better way to describe the act...cause it's really strange to assert that the United States Government is really being an Indian Giver as of late. While I'm not a fan of the bonuses at AIG, the bailout money wasn't explicitly explained (lack of communication/miscommunications) and controlled (posthumous taxation legislation? Isn't that like saying 'times infinity' in a back and forth 'nuh-uh, uh-huh kid squabble?), so there isn't a more fitting phrase to use, even if it is socially inappropriate.
  6. educate people that use it, thorgnor? I'm looking for a different phrase that means the same thing, as most of the use of the phrase is not in regards to racism or the mostly false history behind it. Letting people know they've said something awful is so rarely constructive at the time, and most often serves as a waste of time and energy. I hate sidetracking conversations like that, as they rarely get back on track. I'm more with d_jango on this one. I'd be more likely to ask someone what that phrase meant, and if they actually were referring to and believed the history behind it, I'd suggest that they learn more about it. That's way easier to get a meaningful, light-hearted, or somewhat interesting conversation back on track rather than piously scolding someone. Scolding that person, though, would be a great way to end the conversation in a timely manner - what a great way to get out of a waste of time.
  7. well the issue isn't really the reposession itself it's the conditions surrounding it. 'reposession' doesn't really have the same vibe. someone taking back something that was given...without warning or expectation. If you get repoed it's for a reason. 'Indian Giver' doesn't really work for that. 'asshole' is kinda close, but decidedly vague...same as hypocrite.
  8. There are loads of people that don't think about the euphelisms they use. Haven't used it since I was a kid. I heard it the other day and was hoping to find a usable alternative. Hypocrite doesn't fit the bill as it describes character qualities rather than referring to an action...I had thought of that too.
  9. If we hired ei recipients en masse wouldn't that make the hiring redundant
  10. ...it's such a racist phrase. but until there's a less politically incorrect one it's stuck in our lexicon. What is a good alternative to 'Indian Giver'?
  11. If we start gauging the strength of our economy by the total wages, the economic divide will only widen. I really do hope Canada can tackle the plagues of underemployment and weakening a middle-class.
  12. I think that believing that line may disappoint the discerning music critic. It's sort of the gist, but it's not entirely my opinion...because I believe that she'd do her best to 'fix' the song - so it wouldn't be such a terrible song anymore. She seems to put a lot of herself into her performance and product...which really works well on cover songs. I enjoyed the show and have liked her for years, but can take enough of a step back to see that a lot of the hype we may or may not hear about her in the next couple of years (if localcrew is right) won't just be hype...but will probably benefit from being a bit more grounded. the Bronson Centre floor was packed. I can only guess the balcony filled up nicely too. If it would have been licensed the night could have gotten really rowdy and huggy. It'd be great to see her at blues/folk fest or in a cabaret style venue.
  13. I think that songs do matter, but her talent transcends crafty songwriting.
  14. You DID misunderstand, AD. localcrew was getting at Ms. Ryder being a gifted singer that really can make great songs touch listeners in a very special way... ...but since her most noticable gift is in her personality and expression, a song's failed graces wouldn't be front and centre. The songs themselves don't matter but their meanings are shared with the crowd every time. I think localcrew has a crush.
  15. I'd like to publically apologize for even reading this thread.
  16. I can't believe you spelled it imployed. Underemployment is crucial to take into account and the total wage factor would skew the results when the super rich overshadow it all. I think you're onto something, but intead of a total go-to it should be a factor as an overall indication system that would take into account demand for social safety net services like homeless shelters, food banks, second hand shops, and job banks. How would these help Canada to be a truly self-sustaining country? To be ultimitely fair, there is absolutely no good reason that we're not the most thriving country in the world, rather than the least effected in the G8. There's still poverty, illness, and severe social ails that hold us back. I know we have a lot going for us here in Canada but it's really not enough. We need to be able to understand how this country can improve most efficiently, and an overhaul of employment and effectiveness indication would probably help a lot.
  17. 'Improvising' is not always akin to 'grooving' or 'rocking out' for most people. Though it would be great to hear what she'd think of on the spot, a great baby step would be just a bit longer live renditions. A small band tour in a van/very big car with a trailer would be a fair and fun endeavour and could play out well with local guest appearances and openers. At a time of media upheaval, community is a great thing to build, and it seems like she's been in there measuring for crown molding everywhere in the neighbourhood. Those 'on my last record' talks were seamless.
  18. Wow. they pulled it out in Tokyo exactly 2 months after I said online here that I wanted to hear it in Montreal.
  19. Someone needs to start making fake license plate covers so that our tickets are never correct in the first place.
  20. I was also at the Bronson Centre and was glad to have gone. Definitely a treat. I often think/say artists like her should stretch out little parts of songs even for 15 more seconds. Fifteen minute jams in the middle of sisters of mercy takes a certain touch that only a handful of people out there could pull off tastefully - but really, who am I to say - especially over and over and over (i'm just at over and over)? At the time fifteen seconds would feels like a whole lot - especially in 5 songs throughout the night. That being said, Monday night I didn't feel rushed through her set. I can always want a bit more, but it's great to be entirely happy with less. I got the impression the band was either just recently reformed or it was for this tour. What a (seemingly) great gig. I can only presume she'd be a great person to support on stage. I'd love to be travelling the country playing songs like that with someone as seemingly genuine and interesting as Serena Ryder (let alone soulful and talented) Royal Wood was a fantastic opener. Reminded me of McCartney.
  21. All too often people believe 'Global Trade' is 'Globalization'. It's not and the latter has been a very oppressive force that the corporatocracy has imposed upon us. Richness superceded enrichment long ago.
  22. did you quote that to save it somewhere else online? ...or to point out "This has all been planned for a long, long time as I and others have been warning all these years, and the 'hostile groups' the document talks about will be anyone who is challenging the political/military dictatorship in any way, even verbally. "
  23. Every tongue in heaven and earth (shall declare) Your glory [hole]
