  2. Tim's a great guy and this news really tugs at my heartstrings. Good luck Timmy B and heal quickly.
  3. Sure there's a retro appeal and niche market for vinyl and even 8-track, but c'mon Ollie. Do you think that music retail giants will remain lucrative businesses and support music relying on vinyl sales?
  4. Richard Branson was on The Hour last night and confirmed what we already know: There won't be anymore music retail stores in 10 years.
  5. I'm shocked a box of Sawmill Creek vidal can do so much damage.
  6. I thought Sunrise was a domestic chain?
  7. I've been thinking about joining Heritage Toronto, which is a group that works to maintain and protect heritage sites and buildings (amongst other things). I'm continually sickened and enraged when I witness historical buildings demolished by developers and I'm an urbanist, so Heritage Toronto should be a worthwhile organization to join. http://www.heritagetoronto.org/home.show
  8. The Decemberists, at least from last year's ACL, was pretty good. I generally dislike them, but it was not bad, although very calculated.
  9. WNED has a quirky schedule for ACL. It's a great station when it comes to most of their programming (it's better than the HD Detroit PBS stations), but it is tough to nail down when the hell they are airing ACL. Friday is when I usually stumble across it, but it's a week behind the HD Detroit stations.
  10. I'm listening to the Once soundtrack, again. Those songs stay with me more than anything released this year or last.
  11. The freaking episode airs a million more times this year. Chill out. Better yet, if you don't have their last two albums, get them immediately. PBS usually airs the hell out of a new ACL episode for the entire week. Any confusion, you should check out your local PBS website. They are all informative.
  12. I'm pleasantly surprised that the late great Junior Kimbrough has a myspace page. He may not be the most famous or influential North Mississippi Delta Blues artist (see: Mississippi Fred McDowell and R.L. Burnside), but he's the best and the scariest. The Black Keys and North Mississippi Allstars wouldn't be here today without him. Enough pontificating; turn this mother up: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=69258964
  13. Cudos to Bravo! for showing one of the greatest anti-war movies ever made (it's on right now): All Quiet on the Westen Front. It's the original Lewis Milestone film.
  14. They really brought it for their performance on Austin City Limits. It was no Massey Hall show (which ranks in my All Time Top 5 concerts), but it was great nonetheless - the crouded stage limits their true overall visual and emotion live experience, as does the television medium. See it in HD if you can.
  15. Yes, starting at midnight on several of the movie channels, so my wife tells me.
  16. If TMN also offers TMN on Demand for their free weekend, get watching Dexter. It's one of the best shows on TV. New episodes air on Sunday night at 10pm, but you must not watch them because they are part of season-long archs.
  17. #324 - Songs of Socities - Songs about towns, cities or villages: 1. Springsteen - Atlantic City 2. Blues Traveler - Canadian Rose 3. John Prine - In A Town This Size 4. Max Webster - Toronto Tontos 5. The Bicycles - Paris Be Mine 6. Gram Parsons - The Streets of Baltimore 7. Air - Alone in Kyoto 8. Richard Thompson - The Sights and Sounds of London Town 9. The Rugburns - Skyfuckingline of Toronto 10. Junior Kimbrough - Meet Me In The City 11. 12.
  18. One of the greats of the 20th century. He was a fantastic boxing writer and sportsman too. Here's one of the best write-ups, not surpringly, from The New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/10/books/11mailer.html?_r=1&hp=&adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1194703955-MbgUrKa3CcVuPyqUZx76xg&oref=slogin
  19. My beef is with the PC's and their lack of vision and funding towards Canadian cities. The Libs are their own beast and I've liked some of their infrastructure proposals. Dalton is generally lost when it comes to healthy cities, but this rail proposal looks good. I wish the PM had a similar agenda.
  20. I had hot wings from Swiss Chalet. Never again. It was like eating suicide wings dipped in spicy lava.
  21. Doesn't London attract mid-sized acts? C'mon, London?! Until recently, the town was a music black hole. Even Brantford with its infamous dead downtown has a thriving live scene. If it's an easy stop on a tour, acts can get booked in any appropriate venue. You need good promotors. A couple of big acts breaking in a great new venue will help build a legacy.
  22. That may be, but check out the cover of today's Toronto Star.
  23. Federal money isn't coming to cities any time soon. The PC's don't seem to care about infrastructure and urban health.
  24. It's not only club owners that can be sleazy, so are developers. I guess he's double guilty. It's a moral issue isn't it? How many developments in the world are built on dirty money? I'd say there's a high percentage that are.
