Jaimoe
What should I expect? I'll be in NYC for the weekend and I'm planning on checking out some bands. I'm excited, but I know that CBGB's is in the Bowery ( Lower East Side Manhattan ). Any other club I should check out for some good music - jam band-type clubs being optinal? shitidiot
a shit hole. last i saw, it was run down and drity. what are you going for?
Super Freak
It's CBGB's, it's supposed to be run down and dirty. It's the Home of the NY punk scene borne of the 70's. I'd go in a New York minute(pun intended). I've never been but and old friend of mine played there years back. I don't know if it's still around or what but Max's Kansas City might be a place to visit(Can't remember where it is ) I'm jealous!!! :: Try to see Letterman...that would be cool. Booche
Yeah, I doubt there is going to be much to do.......... Maybe you could check out a movie. I hear that Mean Girls has just come out.
Jaimoe
I'm going for a mini vacation. I know it's a dump, but so was the Comfort Zone and Grossman's Tavern, although not to the extent of CBGB's. I like the CBGB's bands from the 70's, and I know there is a revival of that sound now. I'm going to cab it in and cab it out so not to get robbed walking back to my hotel. As for Letterman, I'm not much a fan any more. I get tired of the constant applause after every joke or comment. I wish I had tickets for Conan.
bradm
How about The Village Vanguard? OK, it's straight-up jazz (Clark Terry's playing there this week), but the place is legendary. When I was in NYC in December, I managed to see the Bill Frisell Trio at the Vanguard on a lark, and loved every second of it. Aloha, Brad

Esau
I asked a friend from NYC this question for ya... "cbgb's is right at the end of bleeker st... if he walks westward along bleeker, he will come across no fewer than 10 live music venues... door charges should be in the $5-$10 range, and all genres will likely be represented" But did inquire what your musical tastes were to maybe give a better option. Jaimoe
My head hurts just trying to digest all the good bands, minus Morrissey. To answer your question about my musical tastes Esau, I love blues, jazz, country, folk, hard-rock, punk. So, I guess I'll have a lot to choose from, although I can only go out to check out bands on Friday and Sunday night. Saturday I'll be at the Broadway show " Wicked ", which is a huge smash this year, and it's coming to Toronto in late this year.

Jaimoe
I respect the talents of Morrissey, The Smiths, The Cure, New Order, Joy Division, OMD, and even Depeche Mode, but I hate their music all with a passion. The bands from that scene never did it for me.
Freeker
If it were me, I hit these shows for sure. FRIDAY, MAY 7th Amfibian Knitting Factory !!!!!!! Seth Yacovone Band Knitting Factory SATURDAY MAY 8th Van Morrison Battery Park The BRIDGE (Baltimore) Lion's Den ..or you could go to Sloan @ the Bowery Ballroom , and be a token Canadian I'm sure Trey will pop up somewhere, but the last thing I'd do is go to Letterman to see him, it's a waste of a day in NYC IMO. Go see them film the Daily SHow with Jon Stewart, it's wicked and it's right in Midtown. Have a good time Dave, pick me up some watches on Canal St. wouldya
Booche
If I were out, stalking Trey, I would plant myself at The Knitting Factory, no questions asked. Friday, looks as safe as you can get, and Saturday features Topaz.
