John Butler Trio – Live at Red Rocks

Worldwide platinum-selling artist John Butler Trio returns with their first live album in five years. Live at Red Rocks captures JBT's explosive, uplifting and inspired live show on a June evening at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside of Denver, CO. The collection features 22 songs spanning JBT's entire repertoire including choice cuts from critically-acclaimed albums April Uprising (2010) and Grand National (2007). Both albums yielded chart-topping US Triple-A singles, One Way Road & Better Than, and garnered rave reviews for its sophisticated mix of guitar stylings and intelligent, socially conscious lyrics. - Amazon.com

The John Butler Trio may be smaller than most jam bands, but they sure know how to make a racket. The guys get a little help from their friends on this concert album -- Danielle Caruana trades harmonies with her husband, Mr. Butler himself, on “Losing You,†and a Native American dancing troupe joins the group on several songs -- but most of Live at Red Rocks focuses on the trio itself, highlighting John Butler’s guitar work and showcasing the multi-instrumental talents of bandmates Byron Luiters and Nicky Bomba, both of whom were still relatively new at the time of the album’s recording. Playing live brings out the crunchy side in Butler’s music, which loses some of the mainstream-skirting elements from April Uprising and gets back to the jam band appeal that first launched his career. He sings about revolution, about respecting your mother, about smoking marijuana, and he does so with a sort of skittish, imperfect voice that’s solid enough to carry these melodies but doesn’t take away from his guitar skills, which are the bread and butter of this three-disc set. You don’t hear the crowd much, even on the quieter numbers, but you definitely see them on the DVD. They look like they’re having fun. If you’re a Butler fan, you probably will too. - Andrew Leahey

Amy Winehouse - Back To Black (Deluxe Edition)

The story of Back to Black is one in which celebrity and the potential of commercial success threaten to ruin Amy Winehouse, since the same insouciance and playfulness that made her sound so special when she debuted could easily have been whitewashed right out of existence for this breakout record. (That fact may help to explain why fans were so scared by press allegations that Winehouse had deliberately lost weight in order to present a slimmer appearance.) Although Back to Black does see her deserting jazz and wholly embracing contemporary R&B, all the best parts of her musical character emerge intact, and actually, are all the better for the transformation from jazz vocalist to soul siren. With producer Salaam Remi returning from Frank, plus the welcome addition of Mark Ronson (fresh off successes producing for Christina Aguilera and Robbie Williams), Back to Black has a similar sound to Frank but much more flair and spark to it. Winehouse was inspired by girl group soul of the ’60s, and fortunately Ronson and Remi are two of the most facile and organic R&B producers active. (They certainly know how to evoke the era too; Remi’s “Tears Dry on Their Own†is a sparkling homage to the Motown chestnut “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,†and Ronson summons a host of Brill Building touchstones on his tracks.) As before, Winehouse writes all of the songs from her experiences, most of which involve the occasionally riotous and often bittersweet vagaries of love. Also in similar fashion to Frank, her eye for details and her way of relating them are delightful. She states her case against “Rehab†on the knockout first single with some great lines: “They tried to make me go to rehab I won’t go go go, I’d rather be at home with Ray†(Charles, that is). As often as not, though, the songs on Back to Black are universal, songs that anyone, even Joss Stone, could take to the top of the charts, such as “Love Is a Losing Game†or the title song (“We only said good bye with words, I died a hundred times/You go back to her, and I go back to blackâ€). - John Bush

I've listened to this one a couple of times in the last few days. Gotta say, I think I like it more than the Back To Black release. Much more on the jazzier side of things.

Amy Winehouse - Frank (Deluxe Edition)

The FRANK DELUXE EDITION two-cd set from Amy Winehouse is a treasure. Jazzier than Back to Black, FRANK is a call back to another place and time. Winehouse is pure talent and it’s a shame that her personal life is so out of control that it might bring the end to such a force of nature.

The first cd in FRANK must be the original cd and begins with an intro of Winehouse scatting. It goes on with songs that have a funky jazz & soul beat and Winehouse sounds like a cross between Billie Holliday and Shirley Bassey, with a little Barbra Streisand thrown in for good measure. I love her remake of “Moody’s Mood For Love.†There are also a couple of hidden tracks that start after the “Outro.â€

But the real treat is the second cd. This bonus disc has Winehouse covering classics like “Someone To Watch Over Me,†“Teach Me Tonight,†and “‘Round Midnight†and she makes them all her own. Also included on cd 2 are live versions of the songs “Stronger Than Me,†“I Heard Love Is Blind,†“Take The Box,†and “In My Bed†and other mixes of songs from cd 1. - Alex Honda
