still can't decide on tracks from :

Ump Mcgee

modest mouse

my morning jacket

Wilco

JAck Johnson

Ben Harper

Spearhead

I think you got the wrong John Prine song (not that there is such a thing), but id suggest "Inspite of Ourselves". I think Its beautiful, and funny. For JAck Johnson Id suggest "Do you Remember" off his latest disc. For wilco Id go with something off the Billy Bragg discs, Like California stars, or Way Over Yonder, or if you want to get real "sweet," the song right after Way over Yonder, where the girl sings, I think its called something like, "All the Birds are singing," er something, is quite nice. And for Ben Harper Id put "The Drugs Dont Work," Sure its sad, but its real purdy too!

So, unless things have changed, the idea is to compile a collection of love songs right? Or is it to make a collection of slower, more agreeable numbers? Because I can't figure out for the life of me how these songs are "love" songs:

Somewhere Over The Rainbow

Fast Enough For You

Love and Tears

Angel From Montgomery

Eyes of The World

The Drugs Don’t Work

The Best of What’s Around

???

I felt the same way when Phish's "Horn" got mentioned

Now that you've deceived me

And played my name around

And hung those nasty flyers

On all the buildings in town

Dribbled my possessions

In a ring around the Earth

And bought and sold my self-control

For less than it was worth

Now I know the reason

That I'm feeling so forlorn

I'll pick you up at eight as usual

Listen for my horn

While those are great lyrics (especially the part about "nasty flyers"), it's not a great love song, IMO.

Aloha,

Brad

Angel From Montgomery is about living in poverty for chrissakes!

Angel From Montgomery

©John Prine

I am an old woman named after my mother

My old man is another child that's grown old

If dreams were lightning thunder was desire

This old house would have burnt down a long time ago

Chorus:

Make me an angel that flies from Montgom'ry

Make me a poster of an old rodeo

Just give me one thing that I can hold on to

To believe in this living is just a hard way to go

When I was a young girl well, I had me a cowboy

He weren't much to look at, just free rambling man

But that was a long time and no matter how I try

The years just flow by like a broken down dam.

Repeat Chorus:

There's flies in the kitchen I can hear 'em there buzzing

And I ain't done nothing since I woke up today.

How the hell can a person go to work in the morning

And come home in the evening and have nothing to say.

The Slip's "Love and Tears" is a love song?!?!?

I thought it was a response to 9/11.

I thought it was a 9/11 song as well...

Love and Tears

There's a tremor on this highway

like a tower that can only fall,

'cause when you build it on the blood of another nation

it's a true indictment of us all.

Let the singer be born

from the fabric of our greater need,

and let the the words and you carry each other

and build, oh brother, I will.

This debt, how could you think that I'd forget

I'm thanking love and tears, love and tears,

let's stay here 'til this darkness disappears.

Once I met a wicked man.

He smiled shyly as he offered me some sweet bread.

And I never knew he was my grandpa

'til I found my mother crying by the bed.

Let the strong wind blow through me reason.

Let the stars renew my weary eyes.

You're my friend, I'll say it again and

by then I think you won't be so surprised.

This said, gonna make me jump right out of bed

for sake of love and tears, love and tears,

we'll stay here 'til this darkness disappears.

This debt, I know John Lennon won't forget.

I'm talking love and tears, love and tears,

we'll stay here 'til this darkness disappears.

this love is real by john prine is a beautiful song

thers another sweeet prine tune of his album of all duets,in spite of ourselves, the tunes called in spite of ourselves

She don’t like her eggs all runny

She thinks crossin’ her legs is funny

She looks down her nose at money

She gets it on like the easter bunny

She’s my baby I’m her honey

I’m never gonna let her go

He ain’t got laid in a month of sundays

I caught him once and he was sniffin’ my undies

He ain’t too sharp but he gets things done

Drinks his beer like it’s oxygen

He’s my baby

And I’m his honey

Never gonna let him go

In spite of ourselves

We’ll end up a’sittin’ on a rainbow

Against all odds

Honey, we’re the big door prize

We’re gonna spite our noses

Right off of our faces

There won’t be nothin’ but big old hearts

Dancin’ in our eyes.

She thinks all my jokes are corny

Convict movies make her horny

She likes ketchup on her scrambled eggs

Swears like a sailor when shaves her legs

She takes a lickin’

And keeps on tickin’

I’m never gonna let her go.

He’s got more balls than a big brass monkey

He’s a wacked out werido and a lovebug junkie

Sly as a fox and crazy as a loon

Payday comes and he’s howlin’ at the moon

He’s my baby I don’t mean maybe

Never gonna let him go

In spite of ourselves

We’ll end up a’sittin’ on a rainbow

Against all odds

Honey, we’re the big door prize

We’re gonna spite our noses

Right off of our faces

There won’t be nothin’ but big old hearts

Dancin’ in our eyes.

There won’t be nothin’ but big old hearts

Dancin’ in our eyes.

(spoken) in spite of ourselves

One of the most beautiful instrumentals I've heard would have to be "Watermelon In Easter Hay" by Frank Zappa, from the "Joe's Garage" album. It has an eerie feel to it, due in no part to it being in 9/4 time, and the phrasing on is reminiscent of Miles Davis' yearning trumpet playing.

Aloha,

Brad
