MarcO
Just listened to this tune for the millionth time, and for the millionth time, I got shivers. A thing of beauty. God, what is it about this particular tune? Is it the fragile melody married to evocative lyrics, the confident harmonies, the wailing sax lines, the lonely banjo runs that ties the whole thing together? All of those? None of those. Doesn't matter; *this* is "jamband" composition at it's finest (as far as I've heard), technically proficient yet emotionally engaging with lyrics that act as "triggers", where I don't even care what they really mean, each line hits hard and perfectly. I really dig The Slip, and as geeky as it sounds, it made my night when they played this in Hamilton. Thanks, guys. SOMETIMES TRUE TO NOTHING ------------------------- You're not the only one who thinks they're the only one to feel this numb, in spite of the distance you've come. Light comes in through the eyes, (It's) something that you recognize, but you've ignored, cause nobody told you what to ask for. The heart is a wilderness with beauty and emptiness that you endure, cause you never can be sure. ...and it rolls and it tumbles forward, and it pushes the envelope, 'cause it's nowhere and everywhere, and it's breaking your heart to watch it. In case you're the only one-- nobody else's child, stay here you're mine, there's gotta be something you can find here. It hurt so you took it out. You're gonna work it out. No invisibile line could possibly define... ..and it's hiding up there in the corner, like a child you're in need of protection, and it keeps you as long as you let it, and it holds you 'til it's all you are, and it pushes the envelope, 'til it freezes your need to reconnect, and you've grown to depend uupon it, and it's breaking your heart to watch it go. dave-O
Banjo and sax, you've gotta love it! I've had Angels Come on Time in heavy rotation for a while and that's my favourite track too...
mark tonin
"Sometimes True To Nothing" makes me shiver every time I hear it. Somehow that song taps into my emotional core. It's one of those songs that doesn't seem like it was "written", but rather created by allowing what is inside of the creators to flow outward, without losing any of the emotional energy in the translation from pure emotion to song. Peace, Mark
Groove Fetish
it is my fav tune as well- and thankfully I get to hear it a lot! It is a great way to wake up. Loved the dedication they did when they played it in Hamilton as well- too sweet. those are some beautifully put and well framed thoughts.

MarcO
so in the end, what *was* the deal with the monkey man at CTMF? did he really just get up on stage and start howling without any pre-arranged consent? or was the band in on it? and finally, who was it?!? kung
You don't want to get me going on this one. I can think of several conversations I've had over the past couple years with Brad about this tune since I first heard it at Evolve. Here's my exact notes from a chat we had at the Planet: 'reaching out- two friends- sinking down- enduring- companion- offer her something- how can he help her- conversation - depression- E.E. Cummings himself prone to depression' That's just my scrawled notes but the gist is that it was written in response to a friend who was suffering from serious depression and it was about her relationship with her man and what they could offer each other. Brad has said that the last refrain 'standing up their in the corner...' really 'tapped him' when he wrote it- yeah it taps us too Brad. At the time he identified the line as coming from an E.E. Cummings poem whose name escaped him, he batted off another quick line I haven't found about men smoking late at night. It turns out it's from a collection Amores and Tulips and is the 11th section named after the first line as is the case with untitled poems: O Distinct. XI from AMORES/ Tulips & Chimneys (1922 manuscript) e. e. cummings O Distinct Lady of my unkempt adoration if i have made a fragile certain song under the window of your soul it is not like any songs (the singers the others they have been faithful to many things and which die i have been sometimes true to Nothing and which lives they were fond of the handsome moon never spoke ill of the pretty stars and to the serene the complicated and the obvious they were faithful and which i despise frankly admitting i have been true only to the noise of worms. in the eligible day under the unaccountable sun) Distinct Lady swiftly take my fragile certain song that we may watch together how behind the doomed exact smile of life's placid obscure palpable carnival where to a normal melody of probable violins dance the square virtues and the oblong sins perfectly gesticulate the accurate strenuous lips of incorruptible Nothing under the ample sun, under the insufficient day under the noise of worms
paisley
Frontier Town hi-jinx... I've seen the monkey before... (I think........) I'm pretty sure its one of the bikers who helps keep things in order from the sidelines it looked like The Slip were genuinely amused, they had a "just when you thought it couldn't get any wierder" look on their faces

Stapes
Great Band. I'm kinda partial to If One of Us Should Fall(AKA Shit, fuck) I will always carry the words of your predictions/wounds of your addictions with me even though they harbor some grave obscurity they haunt me like some willows do and nothing has revealed itself to me the half of the world that i can see is just a memory and i will be here to respond so clear and i heard that sound that i have found in you in i in us... as long as you can have the moon let me have the dust somebody comes along you continue to rust [or: everyone will do you wrong till you learn how to trust] i'll be the [cavalry??] you be the national trust together we can climb so high but if one of us should fall, should fall if one of us should fall, should fall if one of us should fall, should fall
Pablo Sanchez
While were talking "monkey man" I'd like to share three of my observations. 1. Monkey man was definitely "in" with the band. I'm going to dismiss any talk of monkey man being some "stray yocal" You could tell by the expression on Brad's face that all was "ok" with the monkey. 2. The build of monkey man is suspiciously familiar. (more on this after the photo analysis) 3. Monkeyman was familiar with the song, he didn't sound that bad singing either. He knew what was coming and the general melodic theme of the tune. I feel I'm closing in on the true identity of monkeyman. I'm meeting a lot opf resistance along the way. I think there may be some sort of conspiracy at work. monkey man is among us.... I've set up a email account where you can send any info you can provide to help solve this mystery. email: whoisthemonkeyman@hotmail.com

gentlemonkey
I think Pablo's NUTS!! That monkeyman was one of the biker dudes for sure. I am pretty sure he appeared right before the Slip's set lying nude on the ground spelling HEMP with YO and a dozen other people- one of the more priceless moments of the weekend. He was the only dude showing his cock, minus Yo, who also exposed himself for the botched photo-shoot. (The ariel view from the stage didn't quite have the effect of say the top of a ladder..) I thought Brad had a look of 'extreme discomfort, but I'm a pro so I'll ride this shit out' on his face. He's not entireley sure if he's safe, or what. I guess time will tell.... haha. this is fun. Pablo Sanchez
Sure, they'll have you believe that I'm crazy. thats what they want. If you all think I'm crazy, then its easy to reject the claims of a crazy man. Don't believe the hype. I'm getting close.

Asparagus
I don't think Pablo's crazy. I think his field of vision has been to narrowed by sitting, staring, and studying those pictures of one monkey-man. As I informed the hotline, I believe this is only the beginning. Perhaps there are monkey-men.
