Help save the Canmore Hotel!! UPDATE: Sale Fell through!!

Hi all,

For those of you who might not know (most of you on here) the famous Canmore Hotel has a sale pending on it that needs could be going through by Dec 15th. The 'Ho has been a gracious host to many of your favourite touring bands over the years is a favourite venue of those bands to play. Nobody really knows what this will lead to but I'm sure you can all make some assumptions. Anyhow, the only way its going to be kept the same is if it is designated as a historic landmark by the town...which has its own problems that I won't discuss. Anyhow, if you feel strongly about this, please visit the link below and vote in this poll (right side of page) and pass it on to anyone who might be of benefit...

i spilled tequila rose on my pants at the 'ho. i think we were seeing BNB. not that i spend much time in canmore anymore (and not that i really ever did) but it would be a shame to see that place disappear. i have a sinking feeling canmore is going the way of banff... overpriced everything and tourists galore. bummer!

Oh no. I have a dream.

nero @ The Canmore Hotel, Canmore Alberta

We stayed in Nelson until Wednesday, leaving voluntarily before we were asked to get the hell out. Drove through treacherous weather, arriving in Banff around midnight. We stayed the night with my depressed transvestite friend (focus man, you know the answers) and he and Chris and I hiked up Tunnel Mountain before we took off for Canmore, booking into our rooms a day early thus succeeding in our mission to survive a week off with a minimum of cost.

The Canmore Hotel (aka the Ho) is a dive-ish tavern that’s about a hundred years old with an awesome staff, and wide cross section of clientele, and a dozen or so half-star hotel rooms upstairs. I was in room number ten: about seven feet by ten feet, with a sink, two mirrors, a cot, dresser, nightstand, no electrical outlets, and a window with a $400-a-night view of the mountains surrounding the village, constantly shrouded in a sublime mist and unrivalled by any mountains I have seen before. I want to live here for the next eighteen months, doing nothing but what I’ve been doing; playing guitar alone in room number ten trying to drown out the jukebox that pounds it’s music through the floor every day from 11am until 3am and eating Jerod subs from Subway. Off time restricted to nature hikes and laundry at “The Lost Sock†and the occasional movie in the common room with Shirley. I got it all figured out…Bach and ear training in the morning, a six-inch with no cheese or mayo, then jazz all afternoon. Foot-long for dinner and jazz ‘til I drop. Every six days I get a free sub (this one treated with sauce) and do my laundry with the money I save. If my fingers hurt I’ll walk up a mountain and look down on my sweet little heaven-in-the-valley, number ten, The Ho. All I need is $320 a month rent and $225 a month for subs, ($180 if I go veggie). I know it’s just a pipe dream, but I can honestly say I’ve been thinking about it every day.

If I could get a sponser…

Something about this place brings out the, um, shall we say the strengths and weaknesses in people, kinda like rock climbing, and casinos. There sure are some characters living upstairs: my new friend Darren, Shirley, the old guy that stares his beer glass empty, and the guy that holds his genitals. In the four days and five nights we (and my friend from Banff who came up for a few days) were in fine form. Without mentioning names, various feats we can claim are fainting three times, drinking a 26er of Jager to ones self between 5am and 11am, consistently sleeping until 6pm, one person nailing another in the head with a beer can, puking, turning down dinner and a hot tub with beautiful naturalists, discussing suicidal feelings, burning about an eighth a day personal, General Sloth and Private Mayhem. The people that come to the bar are weird too.

The shows were good.

Wow, no Canmore Hotel!

Moses Mayes has played many, many packed shows in this place...so many memories from the 6 years of western trips there. Good memories of this place include: Summer 2004 & 05 were by far the hottest and sweatiest shows, the woman who lived upstairs that stuffed her pants with toilet paper, the countless bottles of rum they supplied us with, the first couple times we played there in 99 & 00 and the ensuring parties upstairs, and the generous people/friends of Canmore and the visitors that made us feel at home for a couple days to work off tour weariness....wow.

Here are some Moses Mayes photos from the Ho from March 05:

Hope to play here again one day!

I saw Grand Theft Bus there a few years back when I lived in Calgary. A girlfriend and I tripped out there and got a campsite down the road. The show was killer! Danced the night away and had way too much to drink. Met some guys that apparently grew up with the band...hung out with them later only to find out they were a little wierd to say the least. If only you could see us being followed by these guys back to our site, us drunk as can be, 007-ing and hiding...hilarious....but I think you would have had to be there to understand the hilarity!

The food there is super good too and you can't beat the view while sitting on the patio all nestled in the mountains. (well i am sure it is beatable, but it is still very wonderful)

I hope nothing happens to this place as I would look forward to returning.
