In an effort to shore up the goaltending situation behind Alex Auld, the Vancouver Canucks dealt a second-round pick to the Buffalo Sabres for Mika Noronen.

Noronen was the odd man out in Buffalo this year, falling behind Ryan Miller and Martin Biron on the depth chart, and made it known that he wanted the situation resolved.

The 26 year-old Finn is making $665,000 this season and has struggled in four games with the Sabres this year, posting a 4.27 goals against average and .844 save percentage. To be fair, Noronen was more effective in 2003-2004 when he had a 2.57 goals against average and .906 save percentage in 35 games with the Sabres.

Noronen's arrival in Vancouver will allow the Canucks to rest Alex Auld a little more frequently and it means Maxime Ouellet should be on his way back to Manitoba of the AHL.

In their second move of a veteran defenceman today, the Phoenix Coyotes have traded Denis Gauthier to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for enforcer Josh Gratton and two second-round picks.

One of the league's biggest hitters on the blueline, Gauthier has missed 17 games with finger and shoulder injuries this year and he has 12 points and a minus-4 rating in 45 games.

Gauthier, 29, will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He's making $1.33-million this year and will shore up a Flyers blueline that has been battling injuries all season.

"I've been expecting this for the last few days," Gauthier told TSN. "If there's any place to go, Philly is a great place and a great fit more me. We maybe gave up on negotiations a little early ... but it's a great opportunity for me to move on.

"It's on honour for me to join the Flyers."

Gratton, a 23 year-old winger, is a tough guy who has racked up 265 penalty minutes in 53 games with the Philadelphia Phantoms this season. He's also chipped in 19 points.

In three games with the Flyers this year, Gratton has zero points and 14 penalty minutes.

Gauthier's departure from Phoenix, along with the trade of Sean O'Donnell, opens up more room for young defencemen Matt Jones and Matthew Spiller.

Pierre McGuire on the Denis Gauthier trade - Derien Hatcher got hurt last night and he's going for an MRI on his knee today. The Flyers said it was fine, but there is still concern about the knee. Kim Johnsson's concussion problems just won't go away. They've had a hard time getting Randy Jones to be a steady NHL defenceman. They need some depth on defence in Philadelphia and this is a good acquisition. Gauthier is the ultimate leg-breaker in the league right now. He leans on people, he attacks people, and he is not a pleasant person to play against.

Darren Pang on the Denis Gauthier trade - First of all, Gauthier is a quality guy. He keeps himself in outstanding shape. He runs around a litle bit trying to make the big hit, but he's a menace to society. You better have your head up in the neutral zone, because he's coming at you with that big rear end of his. He's going to be good for the Flyers - it's a perfect scenario for them.

Keith Jones on the Denis Gauthier trade - This guy is just what the doctor ordered for the Flyers. They've got some big guys on defence, but they don't hit like Gauthier. He can elevate a line-up that's been a little bit quiet.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have a pending deal involving Mark Recchi going to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Niklas Nordgren, Krystofer Kolanos and a second-round pick in 2007.

Recchi must officially waive his no-trade clause for the deal to go through, but that is expected to happen before the deadline.

You cant be serious Ollie..............time for you to do a little research and realize that you Ottawa fans are as blind as Leaf fans if you think you are giving up something in Bochenski. What has he done? Had a great pre-season playing on a line with Heatley and Spezza. Once the regular NHL'ers got involved, he was lost.

Arnason has WAY more upside.

Pierre McGuire on the Tyler Arnason trade - Let's put this in perspective in terms of Brandon Bochenski. He had a great start in the pre-season playing with Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley. Things will be a little bit different in Chicago. If Arnason can become a mature player and a mature perons off the ice, this could be a gigantic deal for Ottawa. If Arnason finds that maturity, he's goning to be very good for the Senators. He's a great scorer - uses a very long stick - he can play off the boards and finish plays off. However, he's got to become more gritty and play in the high-traffic areas. If he does, Arnason is a very good player.

This is so fucking true. He'll either do really well in Ottawa, or he'll become another Jamie Lundmark.

"Sens do nothing!!??"

What? Read a couple of posts up.

My bad. That post had the info before NHL.COM. I see they have their list updated now to reflect that trade.

Ferguson of the Leafs should be fired.

Ferguson is really not a very good GM in the "new" NHL. He needs to get with the times. The Leafs simply were not and are not ready for the new NHL.

The Leafs weren't ready for the "old" NHL either.

I watched Ferguson in his news conference. It was quite amusing. He was trying to maintain that his current team is good enough to make the playoffs. His reasoning was that they were 9 games over .500 two months ago. He was VERY happy with the moves they made.

Pretty sad when Edmonton can get Samsonov and Roloson. The Leafs can't do a thing. They need a new GM.
