Guest Low Roller
So what are people's favorite campfire tunes to play on guitar? Having just spent a week-end in front of a campfire, I found myself at times wondering what are the ideal campfire tunes. Here's my setlist of some attempts at stardom around the campfire: - Neil Young "Needle and the Damage Done" - Radiohead "True Love Waits" - Radiohead "Exit Music" - Radiohead "Karma Police" - Grateful Dead "Friend of the Devil" - Phish "Heavy Things" - Violent Femmes "Blister in the Sun" - Green Day "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" - Jane's Addiction "Jane Says" - Jack Johnson "Rodeo Clowns" - Nirvana "Polly" I hate the city for probably the sole reason that you can't have fires in the backyard... PalacePrincess
you're probably going to find this a completely bizarre suggestion, but honestly, bon jovi's livin' on a prayer. canada day weekend at frontier town, one of the lads at our campsite busted into it on his gui-tar, and by golly if everyone wasn't singing along at the top of our lungs. too fun. in fact, while my usual reaction to coming across livin' on a prayer on the radio would be to reach over and immediately switch the station, ever since that weekend, i can't help but giggle my arse off and sing along. plus, it's funny enough in itself when you look around and see all your non-bon-jovi-fans-by-day crew heartily belting it out. good times. Guest Low Roller
quote:Originally posted by PalacePrincess: you're probably going to find this a completely bizarre suggestion [...] Actually that's a great suggestion. You want songs that are easily recognizable. Most of the folks I hung out with this past week-end don't know any Grateful Dead or "jamband" stuff and are mostly folk that listen to whatever. kung
I'm with Stapes except I don't know if you could bust out Candy, Fluffy or Big Jilm on the acoustic. The best Ween tunes suited to an acoustic guitar are Birthday Boy, it's cousin Baby Bitch, Tender Situation and FLUTES OF THE mutherfuckin' CHI! Give Mary Lou Lord's cover of Birthday Boy a listen to hear how well that song is suited both to a sole guitar and in this case a woman's voice. bald guy in a blanket
I would be remiss if I didn't throw my two cents at this list. I have had wonderful cheesy success with the following: American Pie The Boxer Brian Wilson Leavin' on a Jet Plane (blame Bruce Willis not me) Lean on Me Stand By Me Cat's in the Cradle Wish You Were Here Burn One Down Mr. Tambourine Man Redemption Song Crash Into Me (actually almost any D. Matthews ballad) You Shook Me All Night Long ...and if all else fails don't be too proud to break out... More Than Words (yes, that "More than Words") Hey, I've been to a lot of fires. I also like to burn things.
PhishyK
People, people... come on now! BUST A MOVE by Young MC is truly the most perfect campfire song ever. -=- This here's a jam for all the fellas, try to do what those ladies tell us, get shot down cuz you're over zealous. play hard to get, females get jealous. Ok, smarty, go to a party. girls are scantilly clad and showin' body, a chick walks by, ya wish ya could sex her, but she's in another world like you was poindexter. Next day's function, high class luncheon. Food is served, and you're stone could munchin'. Music comes on, people start to dance, but then you ate so much you nearly split your pants. A girl starts walkin', guys start gawkin', sits down next to you and starts talkin'. Says she wanna dance cuz she likes to groove, so come on, fatso, and just bust a move . MuleMomma
Every time I'm surrounded by an acoustic campfire jam, I'm tempted to start singing 4+20 by CSNY, but then I realize that I can't sing a note and I've suddenly forgotten all the words (which are a no-brainer when I have the song on). MarcO
For me, nothing says "camping" like grabbing my old Washburn and getting the kids together to belt out a few rounds of Rush's 2112. 2112 Part 1: Overture Part 2: The Temples of Syrinx Part 3: Discovery Part 4: Presentation Part 5: Oracle: The Dream Part 6: Soliloquy Part 7: The Grand Finale

Booche
"but my finger suck" ??? I guess you out grew thumb-sucking? Well, stop sucking on your fingers and start plucking them. ANY song can be made into a good campfire song, even the ones Jaimoe listed. Where is that video of Scottieking doing 'Hit Me One More Time' that will prove it........... long time runnin'
Most of my favorites are already here. The ones I've done hundreds of times include Neil Young's Pocahontas, Dylans "Don't think Twice it's Alright," and two of the Hips slower ones: "Fiddlers Green" and, of course, "Wheat Kings." However, I have not yet seen Leonard Cohen mentioned here, and many of his songs have "campfire" written all over them. Songs like "Suzanne," "So long Marianne," "Lady Midnight," and "Hallelulagh" are ideal for acoustic strumming and wailing. In fact, most of his songs are very campfire friendly, and despite his reputation, these songs aren't all depressing. My favorite thing to do in the world? Sit around a campfire near water with plenty of alcohol and weed, and sing. This is a great thread! I measure the quality of my summers by how many campfires I get to partake in. I don't recognize a single song you mentioned Esau13. Time to start downloading. One I always to forget, even though I've played tons of times is Tom Petty. Songs like Learning To Fly, Free Fallin', and Last Dance With Mary Jane. quote:I measure the quality of my summers by how many campfires I get to partake in.Ditto. See if you can find the video clip of scottieking doing it in stand-up-freezy-acoustic mode at CTMF in May 2002. Hey, Roller, how about "Gumbo"? Quirky lyrics, not-too-heavy chord progression (mostly m7 stuff, IIRC), and a fun tune all around (which I know you like; I've got the Deer Creek Gumbo on right now :-) ).
