Slowcoaster

record_player.png

On the strength of their refreshing and versatile sound and intoxicatingly energetic live show, Cape Breton’s Slowcoaster have become one of the most popular jam rock bands in Canada. The members' superior musicianship enables the trio to hammer out their own brand of high energy, guitar based rock that incorporates touches of hip-hop, jazz, reggae and Afro-Cuban grooves. Guitarist / vocalist Steven MacDougall’s stellar song writing skills and evocative vocals add a defining soulful texture absent in much of today's rock music.

Slowcoaster started to take shape in November 1999 when MacDougall hooked up with bassist Mike LeLievre. MacDougall brought with him a lifetime of tales which came alive in his songs. LeLievre's innovative grooves complement MacDougall's guitar work and vocals, weaving complex counterpoint melodies. Accomplished drummer Brian Talbot adds a well-considered back beat to an already rich sound. The result is an honestly written yet danceable, sing-alongable, affecting, noir-ish collection of music that is as “tight as a whip†while still accented by bursts of off the cuff humor.

The past six years have seen Slowcoaster perform over 700 shows throughout Canada and be rewarded for their tireless touring with Music Nova Scotia's Alternative Group of the Year award in 2005 and the East Coast Music Association's Alternative Recording of the Year prize in 2006. In 2004 the band’s music was featured in the Bravo! documentary Air Guitar in Oulu, while singer MacDougall placed second in the 16th annual National Songwriting Contest.

The band has just finished recording its third full length album to be released in April while the first single "Ex-Girlfriend" will hit the airwaves on March 15th. Tentatively titled "Future Radio" this recording is the most polished and refined collection that the band has ever produced. Honed over many months of live shows and tightened up even further over 10 weeks in the studio, the arrangements feature horns and vocal harmonies that fill out an otherwise raw guitar sound. The vibe of the album ranges from "Leave"'s soothing finger picking dirge to the hyperactive ska inspired "Rasta Flag". Longtime followers will be quick to recommend this album to their music loving friends who will finally realize what the fuss has been about all along.

Vanderpark

Since its inception in 2001, Vanderpark has been carving their powerful and undeniable musical influence into the Canadian music scene by standing at the frontlines of the revolution that is present in the music industry today. Two soaring harmonies are at the heart of their trademark sound, while intricately crafted songs remain their anchor. Vanderparks sonic diversity and appeal is no less than universal. Exuding palpitated grooves, weaving melodies that uplift the spirit, and rocking fist-pumping anthems, Vanderpark delivers a concert experience that is utterly unique and refreshing.

The buzz surrounding the release of their debut album, All Your Hands, is spreading quickly as their active word-of-mouth fan base continues to grow. Vanderparks latest release is constantly in high demand, with the album available in stores nation-wide and online at distributors such as iTunes, HMV, MSN music service, Napster, Pure Tracks, and Star-bucks. All Your Hands highlights Vanderparks song-writing savvy, tight harmonies, and serious musicianship, while validating that these boys have a relentless appetite for progress.

Up until recently, members had been attending different universities located in Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal. Though this posed obvious problems for the band, it also allowed them to play in many different cities, gaining vital performing experience and knowledge of life on the road. As a result of a vigorous and intense touring that has taken the band through Central Canada and The Maritimes, Vanderpark has been receiving attention from a multitude of sources, which has not gone unnoticed. They recently opened for the legendary touring band Little Feat on the Canadian leg of their 2005 Summer Tour and have also shared the stage with triple platinum selling artists The Spin Doctors.

The incredible dynamic that exists between the five members of Vanderpark is as evident as their talent. Being long-time friends that all share a love for performing, the boys of Vanderpark radiate a comfortable and familiar easiness on stage, even as their songs turn more technically demanding. This is an aspect of Vanderpark that has captured so many of their followers. Fans seem to relate to what this band does on stage, their antics, lyrics, and most importantly music. For some, its obvious that Vanderpark offers music from the soul, untainted by many of the ideals set to sail by the mainstream. Vanderpark is simply five guys trying to communicate each song as one entity. If you havent heard of Vanderpark, trust me you soon will. This is a band that cant, and wont, be ignored.

The virtuous sextet skillfully weaves a sonic netting of sunshine pop, reggae, blues, funk and straight-up, uncompromising, downright catchy rock 'n' roll-all in a tightly-wound delivery that is guaranteed to keep feet tapping all night long.. - The McGill Tribune - Montreal,QC

[Vanderpark] are making their mark in the music world, becoming one of the citys most popular up-and-coming bandsthe groups chemistry and long history of friendship seems to be paying off. - The Town Crier - Toronto, ON

SLowcoaster is in Ottawa on Thursday. March 15th, while GTB is in Kingston.

I tried to put these shows on different dates, however GTB didn't let me know until it was too late.

Slowcoaster is really on a roll, the are probably one of the most happening bands on the east coast... They just wrapped up recording their latest CD, which will be distributed by EMI... I expect this band to be the one 'jam' band that breaks in hit radio territory.

as for the group, they've been playing as a trio and quintet depending on the show. JSB's Aaron Collier played with them at the ECMAs. see: http://radio.upei.ca/ecma/node/4662

Their percussionist Darren is now their full time manager and it's been tough for him to play all the shows, and orchestrating this new record deal etc... He still plays with Slowcoaster, but just not on a regular basis.
