it's impossible for me to rank things... sooo i'll just list a lot of bands

sharon jones and the dap-kings (tight tight tight funk and an awesome show)

manu chao (so much energy and fun!)

built to spill (awesome songs despite no Carry the Zero)

buddy guy (dirty dirty dirty)

white stripes (although I was very drunk and don't remember much)

kanye (awesome and a welcome change of pace)

Jim bryson / hilotrons / ukrainia / reverb syndicate / male nurse - (ottawa is a music powerhouse. nice to see all these bands on big stages in front of big crowds)

gogol bordello (nice to see some theatre)

sam roberts band (pump your fists!! he and his band are great)

I ended up leaving the White Stripes show after 40 minutes due to a pretty nasty crowd surrounding us. On the plus side, made it to about the last 45 minutes of Hawksley Workman which was EPIC! Will never miss him again. Regardless, I don't think anything this week really came close to the Femi Kuti show. Unbelievable energy, and impossible to stop dancing.

I'll go opposite here cuz we all know who was good, here's who I thought were Bad :

1. Hedley (I heard Velvet suggested to William that they give Iron Maiden back their font)

2. Hedley (fuck they suck, I wish I didn't have to pass that stage while I was leaving)

3. Faber Drive (I'm pretty sure they were a Hedley cover band or something)

4. I think Hedley should die

5. Manu Chao (over rated, over rated O O Overraated, everybody clap now, raise your arms from side to side woooohooo)

6. Thorogood sucked ass too. Can anyone say "Cheese"

So now we all know Hedley sucks here's some other honourable mentions of who were actually good that weren't mentioned already.

Ukrania was a blast

Bob Schnieder was a lot of fun.

Leahy had me step dancing like a fool (and wanting to punch out lawn chair man)

Shout Out Out Out were very intriguing, they'd be a hell of a lot of fun in a club.

Leo Kottke was a real pleasure.

Elmer Ferrer was cool to see also

Even though they weren't a part of Bluesfest, Wassabi is at the top of their game. Their drummer is incredible.

I'm surprised that nobody (that I have noticed)has mentioned John Carroll. He played outside the festival on the corner near the main entrance, doing a few originals but mostly covering Tom Waits and the like. I thought he was great. He has been doing this for a few years now and has a gig at the Laff every Wednesday night. Quarts anyone?

omg #1....I had completely forgotten we went to see Wassabi first Friday night after Bluesfest

omg #2....I haven't been to the Laff in about a decade! Wednesday nights, you say? Quarts (ahh the "memories"), you say? I think we should have a Bluesfest reunion of sorts there in the near future.

My highlights:

moe.

Franti (so, kill me. I gots BIG Franti love!)

Toumani Diabate

the lovely Sharon Jones

Elmer Ferrer

....and hanging with such a wonderful bunch of friends!

  • 2 months later...

Pitchfork has an interview with Toumani Diabate, in which

In Ottawa, after my concert at a folk festival I had a man and his family approach me and they said that when their daughter was born, they were looking for a name to give to her. Finally, they took the name of my song and they gave it to their daughter. They brought a picture to me.

Aloha,

Brad
