Team Canada 2010 player predictions

Recommended Posts

A guy from espn.com came up with this team.

GM: Steve Yzerman.

Coach: Mike Babcock.

Goalies: Roberto Luongo, Martin Brodeur and Jean-Sebastien Giguere (as usual, the deepest goaltending in the tournament).

Four lines:

Rick Nash-Sidney Crosby-Jarome Iginla

Daniel Briere-Vincent Lecavalier-Dany Heatley

Ryan Getzlaf-Joe Thornton-Eric Staal

Brad Richards-Mike Richards-Paul Kariya (Kariya back in Vancouver is too sentimental for me to pass up).

Six defensemen:

Chris Pronger-Dion Phaneuf

Jay Bouwmeester-Wade Redden

Ed Jovanovski-Brent Burns

Keep an eye on Mike Green of the Capitals. The dude has offensive game.

I'm game.

The team should be captained by a 36 year old Scott Niedermayer, but we all know that ain't gonna happen. Joe Sakic will likely be done by that point too.

Forwards - I'd guess that Getzlaf and Perry will be a unit. Is Paul Stasney American even though he was born in Quebec? Other than someone like Toews stepping up, the rest of the Fs are no brainers.

Defense - Redden's play has deteriorated, I can't see him making the top 6. But Shea Weber will, and so will Brent Burns. It wouldn't surprise me to see Brian Soupy Campbell make the team as well. Or even Chris Phillips if they go with a shut-down pair.

Goal - Luongo starts, does it even matter who backs him up? It wouldn't surprise me if they brought a young guy (Price or Bernier) as the third G.

Yeah, you're probably right. Keeping pairs like Speeza - Heatley, Lecavalier - Richards, etc together is always a good idea. We'll have to see how Simon Gagne recovers from his concussion issues because he's usually on the short list for these teams too.

I'll agree with dave-O: Redden will have no place on that team.

Spezza would be an interesting addition, in spite of his sometimes errant passing. By the time the Olympics comes around, he'll have come close to winning the scoring race (barring injuries) - the selection committee can't ignore him.

Funny how we're speculating on our team's roster for a tournament that's won't take place for another two years!

I can only conclude that we have an insane amount of depth.

I hope Phillips is still in form to make the team in two years. And of course I want Heatly and Spezza there too.

My forward lines at the moment:

Iginla-Crosby-Nash

Heatly-Spezza-Staal

Richards-LeCavalier-St. Louis

Getzlaf-Thornton-Perry

I've got the same lines in mind as you Ollie, but Briere with the Ducks and Thornton with the Lightning (no St Louis). It will be interesting to see what happens to the stock of guys like Nash and Briere over the next 2 years. It's all about numbers for them, they won't be making the team for their two-way play!

D pairs:

Pronger - Phaneuf

Campbell - Bouwmeester

Weber - Burns

The US team is a lot tougher to predict. There will be a ton of turn-over, and for their sake, I hope they go with youth.
