maybe people want their own threads for specific trips...in which case this will just be my own personal travel thread :) but feel free to add and share if you want! and yes, i DO miss the travel forum :)

i thought i'd share a few pics of my trip to mexico last week. i've been to mexico lots of times, but this was my first time to the yucatan. it is so much different than west and central mexico to me, in that it is so lush and jungly, not dry and dusty!

the hotel in cancun was nice, delicious food, prettiest water colour ever!

i went diving at a site SW of isla mujeres, which is just offshore from cancun. the corals and schools of fish were so colourful. didn't see any really crazy creatures though. went back to the island to check it out another day. "woman" ilsand used to be a sacred place for mayan women to go (fertility rites?) but everything was completely destroyed by the spanish when they arrived. now the small island is touristy with a nice swimming beach and lots of little shops selling junk and souvenirs. it was a quaint place though, i enjoyed walking around looking at the mexican houses.

i really wanted to see some mayan ruins, and decided on chichen itza, although tulum was closer and on the sea. it was a 2.5 hr bus ride to the site of chichen itza. first we visited the main ball court, where matches were played 4 times per year (there were many smaller ball courts). i should say that in all the buildings, windows were positioned to let light in according to the sun calendar, which would shine light in certain ways...as you know the mayans were expert astronomists. the buildings themselves were not ornate or carved in detail, pretty basic. still very impressive!

the ball game was a mix of soccer and handball i believe. you couldn't hold the ball. the object was to get it through the ring. the winning scorer had the honour of being decapitated...nice. this is the ring on one side of the field

the big pyramid, different views...there is actually a whole other intact pyramid INSIDE this one, with the original colours and artwork. we can't go in there though :(

this is thought to have been a palace

the observatory..notice the door is off centre, but it's that way in order to be angled towards the sun for a certain reason/day. it's called the 'caracol' cuz it looks like a snail.

we also visited a cenote, an underground well, and went swimming in it. it was so cool and refreshing, and the water was drinkable! very cool.

me too :)

i forgot to post a pic of the equinox at chichen itza (i found on the web) to give an example of the mayans design of the building.

at the bottom of the steps (lower left) there are snakes heads of stone. on the equinox, the sun shines through the upper window and casts light along the side of the steps, one by one. it gives the impression that the snake is crawling down to the earth! neat.

The only forums that are worth having IMO are:

Food (love it!)

Sports

Politics

Gamers

WTB/WTS

That's it, that's all.

The Slip forum is ridiculous. For a couple of weeks there, there was a ton of Slip threads in the Cavern, it was a bit much, but the activity of that band just isn't justifying their own thread anymore. What are they doing a show a year now that we all get excited about? I always miss what little news goes on with them because it's in a dead forum.

PS - Sorry to hijack your lovely thread, lovely Heather.

I'm going to do a merge of topics and clean some shit up. It used to be time consuming and difficult to manage forums and posts, but it's really easy now. Unfortunately, once I mass move a forum's topics via consolidation, there's no way to go back.

No big deal though. A forum only needs to be created when there is a need for it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Those are great pictures, Heather. I spent three weeks in the Yucatan in 2000 at the end of my three month winter vacation. I really loved it there. Especially Tulum.

Here are a few from the trip I did with Jay last summer:

The best place I went last year was Daytona Beach, FLA. I've never left North America (yet) but this is my favorite place so far, even if most Canadians aren't big fans of the states. Personally, I have a great time whenever I go. And I find that guys south of Dixie are incredibly polite and really know how to treat a woman.

Although, I don't know if I would do it without a helmet again, I've held someone's head together after a bike accident where they were wearing no helmet.
