The New Deal rant

weezy

Recommended Posts

This past August, Upstream Entertainment organized the biggest jam-music event in BC for the second year in a row. 'Zoophorus' was to feature The New Deal, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Garaj Mahal, De La Soul and a buncha others... On the last possible moment according to their contract (exactly 30 days before the performance) The New Deal backed-out of the festival. The reason: They had a show booked in Toronto the following day and would be 'too tired'. This Toronto show had been planned for some time apparantly, yet they waited until the last moment to back-out, thus, sodomizing the promoters without cab fare home. Pretty classy, no?

So we've been waiting and waiting for tND to redeem themselves and finally got their attempt at redemption this past Thursday Dec. 4th. (Sonar, Vancouver) However, they showed-up 'tired' and played a booring show of down-tempo with this stupid screen-saver text-messaging "The New Deal" all over the stage. (very embarrassing) Apparantly,'it feels like a job now' and 'woe is me'.

Perhaps they need a new booking agent that won't over-do-it, or they should just stick to one time zone so they don't get so 'tired'. All I know is that they still have not redeemed themselves to the western audience.

Aren't they going on some kind of hiatus for 2004? It's probably a good idea by the looks of things...

that is all..

true dat Pablo... I definately know what you speak of. [big Grin]

I guess my point is that their 'hard work' is sometimes solely to blame for some crappy shows. Since they blew off the west once, they should have planned better so they could be well rested. They were well aware of the bitterness that followed their Zoophorus cancellation and should have made this a 'special' show IMHO. I'm whining because I didn't get my New Deal fix... the music was flaccid, needed viagra.

I'm still hoping for redemption after that show they played at Home in Hamilton. It was pathetic and cost me my reputation with some people that I dragged out. Now I hear that there will be no redemption. Boo. Oh well, to be honest, I'd be pretty excited to see One Step Beyond start playing.

I've been saying that since before the new deal [Roll Eyes] got together.I used to love seeing OSB at La Luna's....

Down with techno!!Once the drugs wear off you can see it for what it really is.Not much.

Give me the deep/jam/grooves that actually go somewhere.

My measley two cents.

I agree with Esau...I don't do the drugs so I don't ge the techno...give me the psychedelic grooves that go somewhere...give me the countermelody of Jerry Phil and Brent ...where's bob...Maceo...hit me!...go Sco'go...give me some interesting dance music with some meaningful memorable melodies....there's my two cents...

Hit me with Some Peace!

why doens't someone do somethng about your lack of melody in electronic music and make it already?

you can get programs on the internet to make music like fruity loops and reason and acid.

why dont' you motherfuckers walk the walk and not just talk the talk?

I'm sick of people going on and on about how the new deal sucks. sure they suck if your'e looking for songwriting and dynamic melody.

I'm also really disappointed that the first mention of a new deal downtempo show was unappreciated. i'm pretty sure we've heard the trance jamband spiel that states 'plateau based jamtronica is boring' but now what...downtempo's too chill for you?

come on. when the deal get mellow they have absolute feel. i prefer their ambient/breaks/dnb/downtempo material much more than the up beatsy fast stuff they pull out of their ass all the time.

it's way mroe dynamic and interesting (and sonic) than the typical new deal dance hypnotica.

and now complaining about someone else's business (backing out of a show) it's news but it should't be your concern. you ended up bitching about them anyway. be happy they weren't there or they'd have ruined your night.

if i could afford to not play a show that'd get me a fair cut of a 5 figure deal because i'd be too ti4red and th music would suffer i sure would and i'm sure you would too. it's one less thing to resent. you've got to look at it from their perspecive sometimes weezy. they wanted to have a great time at home...something they rarely get to do...well do now but then they were on teh road a lot. if i was tired from travelling and giving it my all every night i'd ditch all those west coast new age Granola dorks too. they'd all be trippin out anyway so what did it matter? everyone had a fun time anyhow i'm sure. i'd rather see a dr didg show at this point anyway...unless it was a tND show at barrymore's or in montreal at the jazz fest.

so you weren't inspired by the show...were you suprised? you went into the show with a poor perspective to begin with. you were looking for redemption and thus you were mroe critical.

and if you needed the drugs to groove before you'll always need them. figure it into the price of the ticket and weigh your other entertainment choices rather than complaining that you need drugs to like crertain genres.

man you hippies like to whine about nothing.

go back to your guitar wankery and verse chorus verse song structure for awhile. you obviously miss it.

I miss liking it. the only wanker i've never fell out of love with is good old pablo sanchez. if i weren't straight i'd ask him to marry me right here and now.

pablo - you take me where few others do you manipulative bastard!

i'm not trying to be malicious but we've heard rants about this band almost as much as the burt nielson band and all it does is make people think less of a band. i'm sure BNB would've been a lot happier if people weren't badmouthing some less than perfect shows.

we have a tendency to take music personally because we love it so much but to be honest, it's not ours to control. if you dont'like it you can always find somethng else. we've all got impeccable taste in music because we love it.

why not say 'the new deal piss me off - let's listen to THIS for awhile'

then someone would be like 'holy crap! that changed my life around if only for a second' and then you'd have turned someone on to something wonderful rather than making someone resent an otherwise good band.

if you want to see some great live house come to the stonehenge lounge in london this saturday for contact if you can stand the techno bands. if not that's fine, but drinks are waaaaaay cheap. is booze a drug? who cares. 2.50 shots are worth a less than ideal situation.

Hey Rob,

come on. when the deal get mellow they have absolute feel.

Fact or your opinion?

I play music,so am I just talking then? I have my own likes & dislikes,so my are different then yours. Is it because I don't get up and play on a stage?I have a day job that makes alot more money then playing music....for me anyway,I have no desire to play on stage anymore, did it in 1990,no need to repeat it.

I am no hippie you know that.

Also I enjoy music drugged or sober,as do many others,I am sick of folks telling me what my opinion and tastes should be.Drugs or no drugs,I do not like the new deal.PERIOD.So I should keep that to myself and only praise bands and hug and love?

Wheres it say the new deal suck?

Tell me why I should like the new deal, please what makes my taste so wrong.Come on elighten me.

Please.

yo Canned Beats,

Ya... well... I deserved some of that. I did rant n' all... and whine... But it's because they have been my favorite live show for a while and I was disappointed for the first time. You also put quite a few words in my mouth. I'll assume you were just ranting to everyone for most of that and not me in particular so your post makes more sense.

I can see that like myself, you're a big tND fan. I've seen them a whole buncha times and even with new material aside, the show here the other night was weak. Even the band agrees - I heard some quotes from others backstage and close friends of the band, not to mention a friend who had seen the previous 4 shows who agreed it was a bit of a trainwreck. Hey, they were tired - I understand why the performance lacked energy. I wasn't slagging the band per se, just their performance that night. I'm still a fan and will always buy a ticket to see them. (which FYI was very reasonable for tND -$16.50) It was a bad review, deservedly so, to be taken with a grain of salt. It was also done without any rudeness I might add, just a bit of smart-assedness..

I was only whining (yes, I acknowledge that..) about how I wished they were better prepared to perform - especially since it was the point of contention last time (which was common knowledge, I wasn't leaking new information here or anything. A lot of people wanted to know why they backed out so late, so the reason was officially announced - I am not "complaining about someone else's business", it was everyone's business)

FYI - I love the jamtronica/trance thing - you've definately never heard me complain about that. Sure, it was the first 'downtempo' tND show for me and yes I found it boring. They were on the early 90's acid-jazz tip which does seem like a natural direction for tND to go I suppose, but isn't ready for a comeback quite yet in my opinion. I prefer the STS9 approach to downtempo - more emotion and groove. It's a matter of personal taste - I like all tempo's when done right...

Many people on these boards comsider themselves a hippie.... I am definately not one of those.

"...i'd ditch all those west coast new age Granola dorks too. they'd all be trippin out anyway so what did it matter? everyone had a fun time anyhow i'm sure. i'd rather see a dr didg show at this point anyway..."

haha - too funny. The crowd was mostly late-20's female young professionals, some jocks, new-agers and a gaggle of semi-clean hippies.. it was a far cry from a SCI crowd or whatever... and although I'm sure drugs were present, it was hardly the big E-orgy Canned Beats is assuming it was.

BTW Dr. Didj was great.

"the new deal piss me off, let's listen to this for a while"

On review, your post was pretty fucked-up. I hope I have 'dumbed-down' my rant enough for you now.

weezy...you're right. i was ranting. hey - it's a rant post right?

and esau. i know how much you care about so many things - especially the things that make you you.

i think you've got awesome taste in music.

all i'm trying to do is make the rants less lopsided. you saw that weezy explained a lot mroe than he did in he initial rant.

and for the record, i think people should rant more around here. it saves us from being so non confrontational all the time.

when are you coming up to london to kick the hell outta my shins, risko? hope it's sooner than later.
