Why?

Why can't the radio play tunes from a new CD, other than for the single?

i'd love to hear ANYTHING from Gilmours new album, cept On an Island.

Are they allowed to play any other song?

Can't they just hit, say, track 8 and hit play?

I guess there are rules as to which songs are allowed to be played off a cd?

I find it all strange...but i'm sure there is a reason....

I keep hearing "This Heaven" from the new album on Q107. But then that's the second "single".

In any event the whole idea of a DJ being able to program their own show is entirely relegated to College radio now.

btw, it's Pink Floyd classic weekend on Q. You'll hear some cool stuff for sure.

so marcO, they are 'allowed' to play something other than for On an Island, but only choose to play a song at a time?

i was driving home from work today when i heard it again, .... heard it driving to work this morning....

i've heard it so much lately, on the way home, i simply turned off my radio........too much of a good thing i guess.....

i rarely notice when new albums come out, so i dont have much to compare it too...but the last album i paid any attention to, Greendale, had the same thing.....Prairie Wind as well....

Is this to get a individual song 'stuck' in the listeners head, making them want to buy the album?

I didn't know if it was marketing, or a legal issue....

it makes you hate songs, usually good songs too!

they inundate you with it 7 times a damn day until you cant stand to hear it and turn off your radio.

theyve totally ruined zeppelin for me, if i hear black dog or rock and roll one more time....

I think it's more of a marketing/record label issue. The record company establishes the single and radio station will play the single to death before another one is released. AOR Radio stations seem no longer interested in establishing other good songs on an album to overplay. Instead, they get the word from a program director what song, if any, should be the next single off the album to get airplay.

Videos are similar too. I know that Coldplay have a lot more videos in their catalogue that have rarely seen the light of day - their first and second albums had quite a few videos attached, but they rarely aired or received the honour of being overplayed. MuchMusic is spoon-fed a hit-list from record companies... or, they won't play a video from a band they deem as being not part of their demographic.

Music companies pay DJs and Radio stations under the table to over play the singles. If I hear "Photograph" by Nickelback one more time I am going to freak out!!!!

Photograph - Nickelback

Look at this photograph

Every time I do it makes me laugh

How did our eyes get so red

And what the hell is on Joey's head

(And)this is where I grew up

I think the present owner fixed it up

I never knew we'd ever went without

The second floor is hard for sneaking out

And this is where I went to school

Most of the time had better things to do

Criminal record says I've broke in twice

I must have done it half a dozen times

I wonder if it's too late

Should I go back and try to graduate

Life's better now than it was back then

If I was them I wouldn't let me in

(Oh oh oh

Oh god I, I)

Every memory of looking out the back door

I have the photo album spread out on my bedroom floor

It's hard to say it,

time to say it

Goodbye goodbye

Every memory of walking out the front door

I found the photo of the friend that I was looking for

It's hard to say it,

time to say it

Goodbye goodbye

Remember the old arcade

Blew every dollar that we ever made

The cops hated us hangin' out

They say somebody went and burned it down

We used to listen to the radio

And sing along with every song we know

We said someday we'd find out how it feels

To sing to more than just the steering wheel

Kim's the first girl I kissed

I was so nervous that I nearly missed

She's had a couple of kids since then

I haven't seen her since God knows when

(Oh oh oh

Oh god I, I)

(Every memory of looking out the back door

I have the photo album spread out on my bedroom floor

It's hard to say it,

time to say it

Goodbye goodbye

Every memory of walking out the front door

I found the photo of the friend that I was looking for

It's hard to say it,

time to say it

Goodbye goodbye)

I miss that town

I miss the faces

You can't erase

You can't replace it

I miss it now

I can't believe it

So hard to stay

Too hard to leave it

If I could relive those days

I know the one thing that would never change

Every memory of looking out the back door

I have the photo album spread out on my bedroom floor

It's hard to say it, time to say it

Goodbye goodbye

(Every memory of walking out the front door

I found the photo of the friend that I was looking for

It's hard to say it,

time to say it

Goodbye goodbye)

Look at this photograph

Every time I do it makes me laugh

Every time I do it makes me

And what the hell is on Joey's head?????

The new Pearl Jam song - heard it about 12 times today

Other things that piss me off: U2 has somehow managed to reach a status of "Classic Rock" as well as "New Rock", so they play them on the Edge too. There's just no escaping them.

I think Ive gotten to point now, be it a low one, in my life that I can hear the first 1/2 of a note from most any song and identify it right away. Its sad, pathetic, and you should feel sorry for me.

Yeah, community radio is the way to go.

Occasionally a programmer with a bit of clout will get away with messing things up (I'll always think of Dark_Starr pushing the last Shatner album :) at his station), but by and large the formula seems to be to pander to people's top-40 fetishes, in the same way that would prevent the grayhairs from getting all upset when the Anglican Church started using prayers from anything but the BCP.

Many of us are creatures of habit, after all, terrified of anything that might signal change, or the sheer relativity of all things cultural.

Now, back to that Dead '89 show I was just listening to ;).

Dj's don't factor into commercial radio at all. The playlists are all set by the station manager a week in advance based on kick backs from record labels.

Look at a station like Jack fm which proudly trumpets the fact that they have no dj's. Almost any dj on any commercial radio station you really enjoy probably does not like the music he/she is playing and would promote Celine Dion for a paycheck. Corprate whores the lot of them.

Support community access radio, where the dj's passion for the music is the only driving force, and anything can get played.

The Last DJ

Well you can’t turn him into a company man

You can’t turn him into a whore

And the boys upstairs just don’t understand anymore

Well the top brass don’t like him talking so much,

And he won’t play what they say to play

And he don’t want to change what don’t need to change

There goes the last DJ

Who plays what he wants to play

And says what he wants to say, hey hey hey…

And there goes your freedom of choice

There goes the last human voice

There goes the last DJ...

Tom Petty
