Smaller Ottawa Summer Festivals

Recommended Posts

There are so many small festivals this summer in the Ottawa area in addition to the jazz, blues, folk and Canada Day events. I've written up a few that haven't been mentioned here - please add to this list!

WestFest - June 8-10, Westboro, FREE. Headliners are Steven Page, The Hidden Cameras and The Cooper Brothers. Smaller acts include Silkken Laumann, Amos the Transparent, The Joynt, Riot Police and more.

Ottawa Explosion - June 13-17, various venues, various ticket prices (bracelets are $45). Lots of punk, metal, hardcore and other non-hippy music featured at this fun event. Tons of bands.

Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival - June 22-24, Mooney's Bay, FREE. Bands playing include Spirit of the West, Whale Tooth, Paper Lions, David Usher, Said the Whale, PS I Love You, Craig Cardiff, The Acorn and many more.

6th Annual Bytowne Oyster Festival - June 24, corner of Arlington and Kent, cost TBA. There are 4 bands playing in addition to plenty of great food and fun. This is put on by Whalesbone Oyster House.

HOPE Volleyball Summerfest - July 14, Mooney's Bay, $20-$25. Bands playing include Mother Mother, Treble Charger, Ill Scarlet and more.

Arboretum Music and Arts Festival - September 15, Hostelling International Jail Hostel Courtyard, cost TBA. Ohbijou will be playing the festival along with others to be announced June 7 at Babylon Nightclub reveal party.

Here's their bio:

Marrying their passions for global dance culture, contemporary club music, punk and electro, SILKKEN LAUMANN is the collective alter-ego of three of Ottawa's most restless artists, Adam Saikaley (CBC radio), Pat Johnson (The Acorn, Party Knives), and Rolf Klausener (The Acorn). A mixture of pounding live & electronic drums by Johnson, underscores Adam Saikaley's exploratory keyboard sounds, and Klausener's melodic vocals. Having quickly developed a reputation for mind-jarring party shows, the band recently released their first video “On The Mendâ€. The band is currently recording their debut album “Not Forever Enough†to be released Summer of 2012. SILKKEN LAUMANN is in your dance panties.

I thought she was a former Olympic athlete

I believe she was the athlete that was stripped of her medal for using the allergy medication Seldane? For some reason that random factoid/recollection seems to be rattling around my brain
