  1. forgot to mention, i did a quick google of her name and came across a lot of pieces she's done, and i recognised a few from watching. i remember them being very good!
  2. if it makes any difference, in Boston 2 weeks ago they had a table full of stuff, i think 3 or 4 different shirt designs, new and old cds, and Eisenhower tour posters (that featured all shows except Ottawa, and Montreal was still on there). Nobody was buying posters so they would throw them in with any other purchase. AD

    Blast from the past

Totally, I had an Andrew Cash album on side B of an old Oingo Boingo tape! Great tunes. I gotta find that stuff again.
  4. I downloaded 1995's Return of the Rentals by The Rentals on the weekend and I'm amazed at how good this album sounds. I bought it when it came out, then sold it probably a year later as I thought I had 'out-grown' it. This is a great album... This re-acquaintance came about due to my torrid affair with Petra Haden , Charlie Haden's daughter. I first met her seeing that dog in 1997, and it was there that I recognised her voice as being the sugarpop in The Rentals. Anyways.... Return of The Rentals is still a great album, and if you're a fan of The Who you should check out Petra Haden's entirely a-capella recording of The Who Sell Out. AD

  9. What dates did Lovely Feathers cancel on? Toronto and Hamilton? Any word on if they're playing in Ottawa? Dear Ottawa promoter - show yourself and answer up to some questions.
  10. Will, I never know when your birthday is, you always kept it a bit low-key. But now you've been outed! Hope you can make it up to Ottawa for Friday night. I've got a shot of Tequila with your name on it. AD
  11. NEW YORK — McCartney, Jagger and now Prince. For the third year in a row, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act will headline the Super Bowl halftime entertainment. This time it's Prince. The Purple One, winner of six Grammy Awards and nominated for five more this year, will play at the game in Miami on Feb. 4. The Super Bowl, which will be televised by CBS (Global in Canada), is annually television's highest rated show in the U.S. An estimated 141 million Americans watched last year's game between Pittsburgh and Seattle. The Rolling Stones headlined the halftime show for that Super Bowl, and two years ago it was Paul McCartney. The NFL has tended to take a more cautious approach since Janet Jackson's widely criticized "wardrobe malfunction" at halftime of the 2004 game. That game also was televised by CBS. Last year, Mick Jagger's microphone was silenced as he sang sexually suggestive lyrics in a couple of songs the Stones performed. Prince gained attention early his career with raunchy lyrics and racy performances, but has toned down his act somewhat in recent years.

A prolific solo recording artist and the anchor for the band Giant Sand, Howe Gelb is based in Tuscon, Arizona. While performing in Ottawa in 2003, Howe Gelb heard the Voices of Praise Choir. Howe says, “I was held captive by the sensation, glued to my seat there." After the performance, Howe approached the director of the choir and asked him, “Do you think it would be possible to record with such a sound and not do religious material?†“Sure,†was the reply, “if you keep it positive!†Inspired, Howe Gelb returned to Ottawa to record with the 11-member Voices of Praise Choir and Ottawa musicians Jeremy Gara, Jim Bryson, Fred Guignion and Dave Draves. In Howe's words, “it was a grand experiment to see if we could mesh the sounds of the muck I make with the dizzying effect of the glorious sound [the choir] makes.†The result was Sno' Angel Like You, an album that has received praise from around the world, leading to a Europeon tour featuring the whole roster of musicians. This concert is a rare opportunity to enjoy the powerful musical experience that is Sno' Angel Like You. In the summer of 2003, Sudburian Kate Maki made the bold decision to leave her comfortable job as a grade school teacher and set out to pursue a career in music. Her first record, Confusion Unlimited, was a spark, the genesis of a voice. Her second record, The Sun Will Find Us, was recorded in Ottawa by Dave Draves. Lending nods to the music of the Byrds, the Everly Brothers as well as Calexico and Emmylou Harris, it is the flexing of a soundly developed song-writing muscle.
  15. His Ottawa show is at the National Archives' Auditorium. And I will be there (I think). Great album too, in my top 10 for the year.
  16. anyone in ottawa remember the american embassy after 9/11? that was touching and emotional. wold the ontario government intervene in something like that?
  17. why on earth does the government have to get involved? i don't care either way if there are memorials on the side of the road, but if someone wants to leave flowers they shouldn't have to go through bureaucrazy to put them there. (awesome typo i made there. i'm leaving it in. and trademarking it)
  18. Kinda figured as much. Side A of that Robert Palmer album is wicked. First heard it through Northernwish years and years ago, just got it on vinyl last summer. Palmer + George + Toussaint + some Meters = golden.
  19. Jim Bryson's annual holiday shows are tonight and tomorrow night at the Black Sheep in Wakefield, just across the river from Ottawa. Friday opener is Andrew Vincent, and Saturday opener is Jon Bartlett. These shows are one of my favourite things about the holidays, they’re just so goshdarn super. Tickets are just $12 and you can buy them over the interweb with no service charges, or possibly at Compact Music. (If you don’t know Jim Bryson you’re seriously missing out).

i'll volunteer to be a show-and-event-adder Bouche. I don't even know what PHP means though.
  21. one album i beleive, unless you are counting singles and EPs and all that. 2003 - Full length 'Give Up' 2003 - Single 'Such Great Heights' 2003 - Single 'The District Sleeps Alone Tonight' 2003 - Single 'We Will Become Silhouettes' Give Up is a great soundtrack for everything. And it was recorded by sending tracks back and forth in the mail between Gibbard and Tamborello (hence the name). Can't wait for the next disc. And yes, Such Great Heights is a Postal Service original.
