  4. LAL CD Release Party 09.29.09 LAL is a collective of musicians representing Uganda, Bangladesh, Barbados, and India featuring vocalist Rosina Kazi, laptop musician, Nicholas “Murr†Murray, and bassist Ian de Sousa. With a strong belief in the link between art and social change, the group has developed their own unique sound over the last decade, fusing South-Asian roots, West Indian fruits, and melancholic vocals with jazz sensibilities, hip hop influences, down tempo grooves, broken soul, and electro. Weaving their distinct sound with lyrical, socially conscious poetry, LAL has produced two full length albums, Corners (2002), and Warm Belly High Power (2004), which was awarded the best soul album in 2004 by Exclaim, Canada’s premier music magazine. They have also performed in a wide variety of festivals and impressive venues across Canada, Europe, and Pakistan, and have been recognized with support from the Canada Council for the Arts for composing and recording in 2006 /2007. LAL continues to bring you even more captivating material with the release of their latest record, Deportation (spring 2008), which may be their most impressive work to date. 5. I have seen Joy twice so far at Alpine Valley and Darien Lake. Both times it killed the flow and vibe. People around me looked bored and many took the song as a washroom or beer break. It's just really boring musically to me. The jam is good, but so are all Phish jams for the most part.
  6. i WILL be there too. Also like Basher said you will get in for face or less. I've seen 4 shows on this tour and even though it is sold out there are tonnes of tix floating around. At Darien I saw a guy get lawns for 8 bucks each. No joke.
  7. I like Ocelot, Kill Devil Falls, Time turns Elastic, I agree there but Joy is brutal. Weak chord changes and lyrics that make you cringe. I cannot understand how that is the title track of the album. It make round room seem like a good song and Friday as brilliant. ??
  8. The fist set was a monster and the How how hight the moon tribute to Les Paul was classy. So far from what I've seen this tour it is right behind Alpine and Deer Creek for top shows in 2009. P.S. Way to go Jaydawg! 7th row, Karma paid you off!
  9. So, my roomate I have been looking for places with recently fell on hardtimes and is shaky on cash. Now I am looking for a temporary roomate witht he possibilty of being permenant (if it works out) for the kick ass place I am moving in to. Details: The Place is a 2 bedroom with an eat in kitchen and large balcony with a fire escape to a yard. Each bedroom is decent size with extra cubby hole for lots of storage. The bathroom is a 4 piece with full tub. The kitchen has a good amount of cupboardas and is well maintained and clean. It is situated on the 3rd floor of an old victorian house at Shuter & George St. It is literally 5 min fromthe Eaton center and everything else central. The building is professionally maintained and very clean. Take into acccount what you see in these pictures are what the current tenants have setup. I plan to class it up and take it to the next level The rent is $550/month for the room + util. The util would be internet/cable and hyrdro. Pretty cheap for the right in the heart of downtown. I take possesion on July 31st and move in. The place is going to be cleaned before move in as well. I am looking for a responsible, reliable & mature individual who likes to take of business and party at the same time. Somone grounded but does not take themselves too seriously Only those gainfully employed need apply. A love of music (Jazz, Funk, Disco, Techno, Jungle, Blues etc..) is a must. Those with tonnes of baggage and drama need not apply. I am a non cigarette smoker but 420 is ok! Please spread the word if you are/or know someone like this who needs a place and PM for more details. Respect.

  13. [color:blue]Thanks to quick musical maneuvering the Chameleon Project will be playing two shows in Vermont with guest drummer Brad Park. July 31 Vermont Roots Reggae Fest. Brigham Farm , Grand Isle County, Vt. 6pm line-up and details for the weekend @ www.vermontrootsreggaefestival.org Aug.1 Ethnic Street Fest. Rutland Vermont Free 7-9pm Info www.rutlanddowntown.com/ethnic.html The Rutland Herald even wrote a nice story about us... By Jennifer Bill Staff Writer - Published: July 30, 2009 Toronto has long been touted as one of the most ethnic cities in the world, where more than 140 languages and dialects are spoken. This multicultural city — Canada's largest – paves the way for much cultural expression, and breeds musicians influenced by a melting pot of diverse backgrounds. Toronto band The Chameleon Project is a precise example of how a group of artists who have developed their musical chops within this culturally rich playground can pull influence from several different genres, toss the sounds into its own melting pot, and cook up a stew of musically diverse proportions. The Chameleon Project, which produces a concoction of jazz, dub reggae, drum 'n' bass, electronica and other lively beats, is set to provide the soundscape to Rutland's annual two-day Ethnic Festival and Sidewalk Sales, playing two sets of music Saturday starting at 7 p.m. The trio will be coming south from a gig the night before at the three-day Vermont Roots Reggae Festival in Grand Isle County. "We work with a really rich palette," said guitarist Josh Laing, on the line from Toronto this week. "Like a chameleon, we do straight jazz shows, straight techno, straight reggae, but when we come to Vermont, we will be heavy on the reggae for the Roots Reggae Fest, and for the Ethnic Fest, we will play more of a dancey set, disco-ey, techno, drum 'n' bass fused with dub reggae, with vocal samples to add that element. "It's a real 'you never know what's gonna happen next' kind of band." Laing started The Chameleon Project in 2002 as a workshop while he was in the jazz program at Toronto's York University. It became a band in 2003 with a revolving lineup. Laing embraced drum 'n' bass, experimental Jamaican dub reggae, and of course jazz, the latter of which became the perpetual underlying concept lacing through The Chameleon Project's music, which he describes as heavy on improvisational concepts, sleek in transition and rich in tonal color. The Chameleon Project, comprised of Laing on guitar, real-time sampling and effects, bassist Snappy Homefry and drummer Brad Park, pays much attention to textural detail, ambient effects, and a song's layers. "We don't just play (a song) from beginning to end, but think about how it is shaped, does it build, does it have a release, is it shaped into something. We're certainly thinking in three dimensions," he said. "(Our music is) textural and spacey, kinda pastoral at times." In describing the band's vision, Laing speaks to the success of bands within the jam genre that have long enjoyed a devoted fan base, which follows a band from show to show and analyzes the variations of jamming within their songs. "That's how the Grateful Dead or Phish maintain their interest — they build to a peak and then that peaks hits, and then you are on a ride up to another peak. "Tension and release is kinda the backbone to live music." Laing uses an expansive pedal board that enables him to mess around with delays, filters, looping and a host of other effects to play with layers, reverse them, start them, stop them or keep adding on to deepen the song, which he does all on the fly. "We travel with a lot of effects. Half the time my guitar doesn't sound like a guitar. No pre-set loops, it's all real-time," Laing said. "It's a lot to navigate but we've refined it down to a comfortable dichotomy. "We jump around and do different styles but there's always a constant theme, which I guess is our sound. Everyone has their sound. We have a real large sound for three people." The Chameleon Project has put out three albums, including its most recent, the Snappy Homefry-produced "… if it takes all night" in 2008, which Laing said is more representative of the band's sound today. He said the band has a lot to offer Rutland's Ethnic Festival in terms of music representing diversity. "As a Canadian band I think that we offer something unique from the very fact that we are not from that country (the United States). Toronto has such a diversity … in the '90s, Toronto was a mecca to drum 'n' bass and jungle (music) — it's very ingrained in us, and along with our jazz background, it creates a unique fingerprint. Plus very few are mixing that with a touch of reggae and jazz harmony. "Our background and geography forces us to be different and that's something fresh." The concert's sound system and lighting rig will be provided by Rutland-based sound engineer Neal Jordan. For more information, check out chameleonproject.com. Rutland Herald
