    WONDERous!

Here is what my friend Ivy had to say about the show in an email she wrote. (Reprinted with permission!) It was all I dreamed it would be and more. The night started with Stevie walking out to the entire ACC giving him a solid 2 minute standing ovation. You could just hear people screaming out "I love you Stevie" from all over the stadium. I knew instantly I was amongst peers. People who had been touched as much by him as I have. Throughout the show I heard people just saying that they loved him almost under their breath, like they couldn't help themselves. I will offer some choice highlights but I must say that Stevie came to jam and had to practically be dragged off the stage. He jammed for 2 and a half hours straight! It was amazing. The whole concept of the tour is to say thank you to his fans for their support throughout his career. His mom died in the spring and he wanted to give back to those that help to provide his mom with an amazing life. There was nothing to promote, it was simply just to give back to the fans. The only song I did not hear that I knew (and I know many) was ebony and ivory. I would say he played at least 30 songs. He would do some big hits in an open jam medley format which made them all sound really dynamic and fresh. If anyone had any doubts as to whether Stevie may have seen better days (as many of his peers have) then they were silenced after last night. The quality of his voice was better than I have ever heard recorded. Highlights -the opening standing ovation -stevie put an effects feature on his mic and began a wild medley of funk/hip hop classics (his voice sounded like the effect on Kanye West's "Stronger"), he played We want the funk, We are family etc. -He turned signed sealed delivered into a country tune and had the crowd singing with this sort of twang -I laughed out loud several times throughout the show because Stevie was hamming it up constantly -Stevie having to stop singing because he started crying during one of his songs. He was so into it during the entire gig. Not for one moment did I feel like he was going through the motions but rather than he was excited to be there and wanting to fit as much in as he possibly could -Stevie jumping up onto his piano stool to see his last song A dream come true. One of the greatest experiences of my life. Whoever your "stevie" is I hope you get to see them perform the way I got see mine.
  10. That's the one! Ok I'll send Dr. Mouse a memo.
  11. "What do you love?" "I love poetry, and a glass of scotch, and, of course, my friend Baxter here."
  12. Does anyone remember the link that someone posted on here, to a "game" type thing where you were in this strange land and you flew around and could speak with other people who were also playing at the same time? It was really weird, kinda surreal-like, and pretty cool graphics. Maybe bouche posted it. You could also get into fights with other people on it. There was no win or lose, and no apparent point of playing it (no finish or nothing to achieve). Kinda hard to explain but it was cool and I want to show it to some other people.
  13. 327 - Six Degrees of Separation Connect your pick to the one above you in six steps or less, via sit-ins, guest appearances, shared bills, or any other reasonable connection. Map out the ongoing steps (for the whole theme) at the bottom. Let's see how far we can get (meaning let's not take the easy route and connect everyone to the Dead via covers they played). 1. Parliament - Mothership Connection 2. Fat Cats - Soldier's Home 3. Caution Jam - Too Sweet 4. Alvin & the Chipmunks - Time Warp 5. Jerry Lee Lewis - Great Balls Of Fire 6. Rod Stewart - (I Know) I'm Losing You 7. Sweet 75 - La Vida 8. Duran Duran - Hungry Like the Wolf 9. Del Shannon - Runaway 10. 11. 12. Leftover Salmon - Cash on the Barrelhead (Track 12, Last theme) Leftover Salmon featured Mark Vann --> Bill Nershi (of SCI) is playing at this year's Mark Vann Benefit Show --> SCI played the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival in Byron Bay, Australia in 2004 --> James Brown was also on that bill --> Bootsy Collins played on numerous James Brown recordings --> Bootsy Collins also played in Parliament--> Parliament - Mothership Connection (Track 1) Parliament shared a bill with the Fat Cats at Bob's Bash (2000 or 2001)--> Fat Cats - Soldier's Home (Track 2) Fat Cats are playing with Caution Jam at the Can Jam Spectacular--> Caution Jam - Too Sweet (Track 3) Caution Jam routinely plays Grateful Dead covers. The Grateful Dead played Watkins Glen in 1973 with The Allman Brothers. Gregg Allman was married to Cher. Cher costarred in The Witches of Eastwick with Susan Sarandon. Sarandon starred in the Rocky Horror Picture show which featured the song Time Warp. Time Warp was covered by Alvin and The Chipmunks on their album, The A-Files: Alien Songs Alvin & the Chipmunks - Time Warp (track 4) Alvin and the Chipmunks does "She Loves You" on their Greatest Hits Album. She Loves You is by The Beatles, who originally featured Pete Best on drums. Pete Best is currently in The Pete Best Band, who released "Great Balls of Fire" on Live at the Adelphi. Jerry Lee Lewis - Great Balls of Fire (track 5) Rod Stewert - Jeff Beck group - Yardbirds (Jimmy Page) - John Paul Jones - Foo Fighters - Krist Noveselic. Adam Wade of Sweet 75 hosted a TV program called Musical Chairs which featured an appearance by Sister Sledge who were produced by Bernard Edwards (Chic) who formed the group Power Station with Andy and John Taylor of Duran Duran. Duran Duran's music video for the song "Himself" appears on a 1984 VHS rental called "Sexy Shorts", which in turn a collection of eleven "unrated" ("R") music videos circa that time. The group of artists represented is rather random, reflecting the fact that the sole criteria for inclusion in the compilation was the presence of nudity, not the artist or performance. The tape culminates with "Gimme, Gimme Good Lovin" by Helix, which uses a very thin "Miss Rock Fantasy" pageant storyline as an excuse for a massive display of gyrating topless models (a veritable "who's who" of porn stars from that era)... Helix was once the back-up band for the legendary Del Shannon. [ Click HERE for the story behind that collaboration!]
  14. Japan's melody roads play music as you drive Bobbie Johnson, technology correspondent Tuesday November 13, 2007 The Guardian Motorists used to listening to the radio or their favourite tunes on CDs may have a new way to entertain themselves, after engineers in Japan developed a musical road surface. A team from the Hokkaido Industrial Research Institute has built a number of "melody roads", which use cars as tuning forks to play music as they travel. The concept works by using grooves, which are cut at very specific intervals in the road surface. Just as travelling over small speed bumps or road markings can emit a rumbling tone throughout a vehicle, the melody road uses the spaces between to create different notes. Article continues Depending on how far apart the grooves are, a car moving over them will produce a series of high or low notes, enabling cunning designers to create a distinct tune. Patent documents for the design describe it as notches "formed in a road surface so as to play a desired melody without producing simple sound or rhythm and reproduce melody-like tones". There are three musical strips in central and northern Japan - one of which plays the tune of a Japanese pop song. Notice of an impending musical interlude, which lasts for about 30 seconds, is highlighted by coloured musical notes painted on to the road. According to reports, the system was the brainchild of Shizuo Shinoda, who accidentally scraped some markings into a road with a bulldozer before driving over them and realising that they helped to produce a variety of tones. The designs were refined by engineers at the institute in Sapporo. The team has previously worked on new technologies including the use of infra-red light to detect dangerous road surfaces. But motorists expecting to create their own hard rock soundtrack could find themselves struggling to live the dream. Not only is the optimal speed for achieving melody road playback a mere 28mph, but locals say it is not always easy get the intended sound. "You need to keep the car windows closed to hear well," wrote one Japanese blogger. "Driving too fast will sound like playing fast forward, while driving around 12mph has a slow-motion effect, making you almost car sick." http://www.guardian.co.uk/japan/story/0,,2209972,00.html
  15. The Idlers (10 piece reggae band from Newfoundland) are playing at the Conchord Cafe on Saturday night.. Near Bloor & Ossington. Oh and Corb Lund at Lee's on Friday.
  16. Bumping this one up for the Ontario leg of the tour. I'll be there Wednesday night! Marge, Clinton's just a hop skip and a jump from your pad right?
  17. i guess her sound does appeal to a wide range. and i have been hearing a lot of people who aren't particularly music savvy talking up this show.
  18. In the city Marge? Where would you go, Hyde Park? I really wanna try snowshoeing. And get into cross country skiing too.
  19. Nice setlist. Does Chachi ever bust out the mandolin these days?
  20. yeah it was moved to the phoenix a while ago. www.rootmeansquare.ca as for being sold out, it does appear that way on ticketmaster.ca! also a friend of mine said that rotate this was out of tix. maybe soundscapes has some..
  21. Is this show really sold out?? No tickets left on Ticketfucker.ca it seems. I just find it hard to believe that SHaron Jones & The Dap Kings would sell out, especially given it was moved to the large-and-in-charge Phoenix Concert Theatre.
