  1. One interesting comment I read is how giving the prize to the IPCC will lend weight / more clout to the conference in Bali in December - where they're expected to come up with a post-2012 climage change plan. Something else to wonder about is the possibility of Bush pulling a u-turn on environment in hopes of establishing some kind of legacy in his dying days ahead. The moves he made at his environmental summit a few weeks ago in Washington don't seem to indicate any u-turn, but here's hoping..
  2. I went a few weeks ago and they were spot on. Were the guys in Crazy Strings who are also in Creaking Tree String Quartet always in Crazy Strings?
  3. I've only taken a lukewarm liking to the Young Galaxy cd... Besnard Lakes good?
  4. Thought I'd throw in some thoughts/commentary on this night: - Sold out show! - The highlight of the night for me was opening band OAKLEY HALL from nyc. This ~7 person band rocked, had soul, good male/female harmonies, and a country folk psychedelic flavour. I'll definitely be seeing them again. I bought their new disc and its good. Some of you may have seen them open for Bright Eyes at Massey Hall in the Spring. - Bones was a no show. - Black Mountain sounded good but I wasn't into it. The main problem was that the music was WAYYY too damn loud, and it was too crowded to squeeze into the "sweet spot" in the middle where the volume might have been a bit more bearable. I also wasn't particularly in the mood that night for their dark sound. They were like a mix of Jefferson Airplane and The Unintended. Above all though it was too damn loud and crowded.. So after a while: - I wandered a few doors down to The Rivoli and caught the last 2 songs of the GTB show. Good to see them again and the one new tune I heard sounded solid.
  5. Ahh yeah I've listened to that Songs:Ohia/MMJ ep a few times. Good stuff.
  6. If I don't get in to Black Mountain at the Horseshoe I may head over to this show instead. I haven't heard them but I'm taking your word for it!
  7. I do believe I will check it out! Does no tix at Rotate This = the show is sold out? Can I just show up? SO last night I walk up to The Boat in Kensington for a brew pop and discovered there was a private party going on, a Black Mountain private party. I wasn't on the list so I couldn't go in, they said to come back at 11.. We made it back at more like 12:30 and walked right in. Wish we went back earlier though: Andre Ethier opened and then BM played. (We missed the live tunes unfortunately) Open bar, free fish and chips and other foodstuffs!! The event was hosted by some local clothing company, a strange collaboration if you ask me ().
  8. Ok Oral Groove as the name of a queer positive party is not so bad, I'll give ya that. I wish that house show was this weekend! We need more house shows in this part of the world.
  9. I didn't know about Oral Groove.. Who's Oral Groove? Their band name appears to need re-tooling.
  10. Home for the holiday! I wish Holy Fock was Sat instead of Fri..
  11. The Penguin Cafe Orchestra - When In Rome [anyone ever listen to this stuff before? some of its damn good!]
  12. Bluegrass Mondays is at the Local (in Roncesvalles?) .. Might be worth checking out.
  13. I can't get this damn sweet tune out of my head!

  16. Yeah I saw that - she was on the verge of tears! I can't stand to watch her though; even when she's getting torn apart like that I'd rather turn it off.
  17. They're playing for free.. Anyone know when and where? What zone? Or any other noteworthy musical happenings going on that are a part of NB?
  18. [blurb]I managed to check out the "soundcheck gig" early this evening at Lee's Palace for Broken Social Scene in support of the new Kevin Drew album. It was a 7pm showcase style gig. The audience was in large part composed of people who won tickets through 102.1 I do believe.. No tickets were for sale. The 2nd gig is happening as I type this. Anyways..[/blurb] I haven't seen BSS play since the summer they played Ottawa Bluesfest and Hillside. The core of the band that is playing on the current tour (kicking off tonight and going strong right 'til Christmas more or less) is Kevin Drew, Justin Peroff, Brendan Canning, Andrew Kenny (American Analog Set), Bill Priddle (Treble Charger) and Sam Goldberg. No horns, no ladies, no strings & bows. They came out strong, opening with the first track off 'Spirit If...', a great show opener IMO. They did the first few tracks off the album. Special guest TOM COCHRANE added a certain flare to the show! He played on 'Lucky Ones', as he does on the album. It was pretty hilarious seeing him up there striking these rock guitar poses. Sam Goldberg and Peroff looked particularly amused by it all. A guy from Bloc Party and a guy from Raising The Fawn came out for 'Stars And Sons'.. Later, Andrew Whiteman came on and quickly took over for Sam Goldberg for the last 2 tunes.. 'Cause = Time' and the "i'm all hooked up" one to finish er off. They sounded great if not a little bit rusty. A few false starts here and there, a few off key vocals here and there. But overall pretty tight and high energy. It was great to see them again and after tonight, I'll likely try to catch them at the Kool Haus gig in December. They've got upcoming shows in Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. That's it!
  19. Good times last night at Supermarket. Nice to meet ya Mary! Dropped by High Loneseome Wednesday afterwards for the first time (finally!!) and caught a handful of Monroe goodness before hitting the sack.
