  1. I was going by The Rex tonight on the streetcar and noticed that Jeff Coffin (from The Flecktones) was once again playing with Michael Occhipinti. Took me by surprise and I couldn't make it, but I wish I could! I seem to remember someone mentioning on here that he played at The Rex just a few weeks ago too. Other stuff at The Rex: - Tim Ries, sax player for The Rolling Stones (?) Thursday night at 1am - Metalwood on Friday at 1am - Randy Brecker (from the Brecker Brothers) on Saturday at 9:30pm - other stuff that I don't know but maybe you do! http://www.therex.ca/calendar/calendar.cfm Looks like there's a lot going on. A lot of the shows in the next few days are a part of the 35th Annual International Conference of the International Association for Jazz Education (http://www.iaje.org/)
  2. In a good way? I think I will go with Levon's book.. For one, cuz he's in the band, and cuz used copies of it are cheaper than used copies of the other one.

  7. What surprises me most about this story is where it happened. Those who have traveled in Thailand will know Pai is a small hippy village up in the mountains with a surprisingly strong local music scene. Its a popular backpacker stop, a good 3 hours away from Chiang Mai. An event like this must shock a village of that size pretty severly. Canadian killed by Thai police officer Associated Press January 6, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST BANGKOK — A Thai police officer fatally shot a Canadian man and wounded his pregnant companion during a scuffle outside a bar in northern Thailand, authorities said Monday. The officer told investigators the shooting was an accident but he was charged with premeditated murder, said police Col. Sombat Panya of Pai district in northern Mae Hong Son. John Leo Del Pinto, 25, died early Sunday of two gunshot wounds — one to the face and one to the torso — and his partner, Carly Reisig, also of Canada, was in hospital with a bullet wound in her body, Col. Sombat said. Their hometowns were not immediately known, Col. Sombat said. The couple, who had rented a home in the town Mae Hong Son, were drinking at a bar in Pai and began arguing, Col. Sombat said, citing witnesses. Outside the bar, their argument turned physical and when a police officer tried to intervene the couple attacked him, Col. Sombat said. The officer, Sgt. Uthai Dechawiwat, told investigators Mr. Del Pinto tried to grab his pistol and the gun “accidentally went off†three times, Col. Sombat said. However, Sgt. Uthai was charged with premeditated murder for Mr. Del Pinto's death and with “intent to kill†in connection with Ms. Reisig, Col. Sombat said. Sgt. Uthai was released on bail. The couple had rented a home in Mae Hong Son, on the border with Myanmar, for several years but took regular trips in and out of Thailand to extend shot-term tourist visas, Col. Sombat said.

    pot luck ideas!

Here's the sauce I made: hoisin-chili dipping sauce 1 shallot or 1-2 cloves garlic 1/2 cup hoisin sauce 1 Tbsp. rice vinegar 1/4 cup water 2 tsps. Asian red chili paste (I use sambal oelek, but any chili paste will do) 2 Tbsp. chopped peanuts for garnish Stir-fry the minced garlic or shallot for a minute or two, until the garlic is softened. Add the hoisin sauce, rice vinegar and water, and bring to a boil. Add chili paste to taste (about 2 tsps. generally does it for me). Remove from heat, pour in dipping bowl(s), and garnish with chopped peanut. Instead of garnishing with 2 tbsp chopped peanuts, I mixed in about 6 tbsp of chopped peanuts. It was good!

I'm thinking about going with good ol' Vietnamese style cold spring rolls (aka Goi Cuon). Here are some recipes I'm finding: http://www.recipezaar.com/20445 http://grabyourfork.blogspot.com/2005/01/homemake-goi-cuon.html I'm doing vegetarian though.

    pot luck ideas!

I'm going to a pot luck and I am gapping out on what the hell to bring! Anyone have any tried tested and true pot luck ideas to share??
  11. Its totally not a musical in that sense, Jeff.. I see what you mean. Calling it a musical can be misleading. The plot doesn't unfold in the lyrics of the songs, per se. Its a low budget film with music at its core, and lots of it!
