  1. I have a love/hate relationship with Grantland. Some great sports writing for sure but the way they pay so much attention to movies' date=' TV and pop culture in general delves into self-parody territory. [/quote'] That's fair, although I think the writers take such an academic approach to almost everything they cover that the site remains above the fray. (The one exception to this, unfortunately, is their NHL writer Katie Baker, who tries too hard to be Bill Simmons. How I wish there was proper NHL coverage on there).
  2. Grantland is quickly becoming my favourite sports website. Interesting to see the allegations coming out of Syracuse today. Given that both the police and journalists investigated and found nothing, I think this is more of a "wait and see" situation than Penn State. I think it's also telling that Boeheim - who is normally rather level-headed in his public relations - was quick to rebuke all the allegations and claim the person was just looking for money. I can't imagine he would have used language that strong if there was any chance the allegations were true.
  3. She's got a couple of great ones. *bows*
  4. I was glad my authorized representative was able to make it. She and her fella had a great time.
  5. You are the Sunshine of My Life - Stevie Wonder Funny, I once saw people use "You Were Meant for Me" by Jewel and thought the same thing. Nothing like a moany breakup song to start your new life together.
  6. Put this list together for a half marathon this past weekend. I really like putting together race-specific mixes, as I try and strategically place songs based on what sort of motivation I'll need at various points. Also, in retrospect, Run Like an Antelope should have been on this one, as there were antelope and zebras running alongside us at various times. Pretty cool. Anyway, here it is. No downloads or YouTube links, as I'm on a rather slow connection. Run time is two hours: Phish - Tweezer Reprise Allman Brothers Band - Statesboro Blues Tom Petty - You Wreck Me Dropkick Murphys - Tessie The Weakerthans - Tournament of Hearts Mike Ness - Don't Think Twice The Avett Brothers - Kick Drum Heart United Steelworkers of Montreal - Rise Up The Sadies - Lay Down Your Arms Yonder Mountain String Band - Steep Grade, Sharp Curves Greensky Bluegrass - Bont's Breakdown Phil & Friends (w/Trey) - Franklin's Tower Soulive - Hurry Up...and Wait Sphongle - Dorset Perception Spam Allstars - Charanga E-350 Classified - Danger Bay Skratch Bastid - Axel F. and Rakim Skratch Bastid - Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em Paul Simon - Late in the Evening Michael Franti & Spearhead - Yell Fire Gov't Mule - Paint it Black Grateful Dead - Not Fade Away My Morning Jacket - One Big Holiday Phish - Good Times, Bad Times Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run The Deep Dark Woods - Glory, Hallelujah
  7. Just got off the phone with my 95 year old grandfather, a decorated flight surgeon from WWII who braved enemy fire while unarmed to retrieve wounded men from the battlefield. Respect.
  8. Golden Brown! Nice one. Would not have expected that. Bummed I'm not around for any of these.
  9. Funny, I said on Facebook that I never thought another program could make The U look righteous. Impressive, really.

  11. Really glad to see Paterno fired. I would like to feel badly for him being forced out like this, but I can't. Penn State took a very "Catholic church" approach to this, in protecting the institution and trying to insulate themselves.
  12. Bummed I'm not going to see these guys again. Especially great times with them in Moncton and at Bonnaroo (both in '03) and a few other shows as well.
  13. It wasn't the first album that I bought, but it was the first one I bought where I felt like I was doing something cool. I still feel the same way every time I listen to it (that is to say, delusional).
  14. As I posted in this other thread on the album, here's Chuck Klosterman's typically hilarious, intellectual and spot-on take: From Grantland.com
  15. Talked about some of my recent reads in a blog post.
  16. Thumbs way up for this. And objectivity be damned, it's great to read a review written by an obvious die-hard. Link to story
  17. Maybe they should try tagging a few of them with transponders, then have David Attenborough follow them and provide a whispered commentary into their daily habits. I'm no fan of Juggalos, but to qualify the lot of them as a gang is pretty absurd. As a group, I would venture to say that they are similar to Phish folks in terms of the unfair mass categorization and generalization they are subjected to.
  18. Wow, dude. Awesome. That got huge laughs here, with Sarah saying that you are probably having a slow day at work. First round on me next time for that little piece of art. Still "LOL"ing, as the kids would say.

  20. It's been fun to be here in South Africa while the World Cup has been going on, until the Springboks made their early exit. I think Team Canada made a great showing, with their only two losses being against the eventual finalists.
  21. Heartbreaking to see him still hanging on to the wrestling thing, although you can't deny that there are still some flashes of charisma in there. The similarities to Randy "The Ram" Robinson are almost spooky.
