  1. I agree with AD, that in order for grant money to have been attached to this there would have been evidence of oversight. Frankly this just seems perplexing to me. It's one thing to not promote a $5 cover bar show, but above all else I am confused as to how the promoters could sink a whole lot of somebody's money into this, do almost zero promotion and still expect it to fly. To me, this goes beyond the realm of a shitty job and is more along the lines of something not adding up.
  2. Reminds me of: Don't mind you asking at all. I work for Justice Canada as an articling student, which is basically a required post-law school apprenticeship. I'm currently working on Aboriginal/environmental law files, but will also spend some time doing criminal work which will have me traveling throughout the NWT. Pretty pumped for that.
  3. You'd better hurry. Fall doesn't last long up here. (Not that I mind; I freakin' loved the winter I spent here two years ago).
  4. Did they turn down an offer from the festival? Did they decide to pull out after seeing it was a Mickey Mouse operation? I'm just curious, really, to know on what grounds the (non-promoting) promoters have this band listed as playing. At the end of the day it's too bad this is being fumbled so badly, as it looks like it had some sort of potential.
  5. So the band is dismissing it as a rumour, yet the festival has them listed as a confirmed act. Seriously, what the hell is going on here?
  6. This is my first Fall in Yellowknife. The birch leaves are a million shades of gold, and mind-blowing sunsets are the warm-up act for the northern lights. I'm a fan.
  7. I don't want to be a fan of thunderstorms. What does that even mean?
  8. Looked pretty badass rising over the lake here in Yellowknife. Going to head out in a little bit and look for the northern lights.
  9. Yeah, or the $30 anti-consumerism tote bag. Way to fight the power, Mr. Waters!
  10. A great read about a fascinating production, although I couldn't help but scoff at the claim that any part of this traveling monstrosity is "sustainable." Whatever helps you sleep at night, Roger.
  11. Thanks, Velvet. And StoneMtn, I certainly will. I'm assuming she's in town, and if that's the case I will more than likely run into her before too long.
  12. Why why why why why did I leave Boulder? I lived a ten minute drive from Broomfield until a couple of monts ago. As arenas go, the 1st Bank Center is a stellar, intimate venue. This show is going to be ridiculous.
  13. Greetings. As you may know from some of my posts, I've upped and moved to Yellowknife for the second time. Pretty pumped to be back North, and for anyone interested, I'll be keeping a blog while I'm up here. Just threw my first post up tonight, and wanted to pass along the link. Friday Night Lights Cheers!
  14. Nice thread. My summer was all over the place. Actually, I’m glad to be able to sit now and reflect on it. -When summer started I was living, working and playing in Boulder, Colorado. What a beautiful place to spend some time. -Road tripping with my lady friend to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, before heading back home to see the family in Ottawa and Lake Placid -OCMS and seeing an old friend every time I turned around at Bluesfest -Spending several consecutive days, for the first time in years, at my family’s cottage. Some special memories at that place, for sure. -Finally tackling the Ironman triathlon, and making it across the finish line mostly in tact. -Driving, again with the lady, up to Yellowknife, where I capped off the summer by moving into a cozy little spot on a dirt road a block from the lake. We had a little bit of snow yesterday, so I guess that means that summer is done. Not a bad three months, I don’t think.
  15. This is great. From the New York Times. Steve Martin Creates Bluegrass Prize Compiled by DAVE ITZKOFF Published: September 15, 2010 Hey, kids: Steve Martin wants to give you $50,000! There’s just one catch: You’re going to have to be really good at bluegrass music. Mr. Martin, the actor, comedian and polymath, has established the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. The award, which he described on Wednesday as “a mini-MacArthur†grant, will give $50,000 annually to “an individual or group for outstanding accomplishment in the field of five-string banjo or bluegrass music.†The award is intended to help performers pay for their instruments and raise awareness about the music. “Sometimes when you mention money,†Mr. Martin said, “you automatically catch people’s ear.†The award, which is determined by a board that includes Mr. Martin and musicians including Earl Scruggs, Pete Wernick, Tony Trischka and Béla Fleck, will be given in its inaugural year to Noam Pikelny, the banjo player for the band Punch Brothers.
  16. If any of you ever want to hang with him, just let me know. We tight.
  17. [color:purple]Does that sound anything like Phish's cover?
  18. Nice. Now let's just hope he doesn't burn Andre Rison's house down.
  19. If anyone's looking to kill time at work, I've posted my Ironman blog.
  20. Congrats man. I hope that little Roberta Weir Huxtable is doing well.
  21. Wow, it's come a long way from the ol' black and yellow. Good to know that it plays FLACS. I just picked up a new computer, so maybe I'll give Win Amp a try again.
