  1. Funny, I just went to YouTube to find the clip and came back to post it. The ball does leave the shot for a second, which makes it possible that they pulled the old switcharoo, just like on every TV show and commercial that involves people making impossible shots. Plus, the teacher himself doesn't seem too surprised that he sunk it. That said, if the students are acting they are doing a pretty convincing job.
  2. I have to wonder what was going through the head of somebody who decided to open a record shop within the past few years. It's always sad to see an independent business fail (well, usually anyway), but I can't see how this could have possibly been a good decision.
  3. Also, Bouche: no blue text in original post = epic fail.
  4. Basher, I rememnber seeing that prank on here before. Laughed my ass off and passed it on. The kicker, though, is the news story I saw recently (complete with video which looked legit) of people trying the same prank, only the guy made the shot.
  5. To quote from High Fidelity: Customer: You guys are snobs, man. Staff of Championship Vinyl: No, we're not. C: Yes you are. You're totally elitist. You feel like the unappreciated scholars, so you shit on the people who know less than you... S: No we don't. C: ...which is everyone. S: Well, yeah.
  6. The new Chuck Klosterman book, Eating the Dinosaur, has an extended section about laugh tracks. Among other things, he talks about how people feel smart and like they are on the inside of something if they laugh when there's no laugh track. Worst current use of a laugh track: 2 1/2 Men. Good Lord, that show is terrible, and the addition of a laugh track at the end of almost every sentence makes it pretty much unbearable.
  7. Let's not forget, though, that Salinger's work has had an uphill battle of its own. At one point The Catcher in the Rye was simultaneously the second most assigned and the most banned reading in American schools. It may seem tame by today's standards, but Salinger was far from a conformist or part of the "machine." Point taken, though, about Zinn's passing being overshadowed.
  8. I definitely thought that link was going to take me to a message board with three different threads about Grand Theft Bus on the main page.
  9. Too bad. In many ways I saw it as the perfect festival, akin to Bonnaroo in its early years, only with more agreeable weather, a more picturesque site and fewer people. Hopefully it can return, but I'm glad to see that they weren't happy becoming just another second-rate jammy fest. I had a great time both years.
  10. I guess they're sticking with what works, lineup-wise. Had a great time the one year I made it to this one.
  11. From their Facebook group: SEE THE WORLD WITH USWM Ladies and Gentlemen the United Steel Workers of Montreal are putting out the call: Banjo/Mandolin, Electric Guitar players wanted. Due to the rigors of life and touring and babies and beer the United Steel Workers of Montreal find themselves in need of some new talent to join the team. Could this be you? 12. None of the funny people post here anymore because other people around here used to give them drugs.
  13. David Myles would be great, at least as an opener. He toured the UK for the first time last summer and was very well received from what I understand.
  14. Since I'm currently working in a massive independent bookstore, I told people that books were one thing I definitely did not need this year. One did manage to slip through the cracks, though, and I'm glad it did: Certainly not high-brow literature, but it's the rare combination of a book about straight-up debauchery written by someone with legit writing skills. Half the time I was jealous of the life this guy has lead as a rock star and magazine publisher, and the other half of the time I was relieved that I will never subject myself to what he has voluntarily endured. It was a kick-ass read.
  15. Congratulations! Being a dual citizen (if that's the eventual goal) sure does open the continent right up. If nothing else, border crossings get way easier.
  16. I think Phisheads are singled out because of the legions of them (and I do not believe that you are included in this) who think that band is the be-all, end-all and think it would be cooler to amass a list of 40 Phish shows in a year than to experience something like the year Timmy B had. But it wasn't my post, so I'm only speculating. And agreeing. I think.
  17. Jay hand-picked Conan to take over the Tonight Show because Jay wanted to basically retire... but secretly set up his own earlier show to undercut all the 11:30 late night programs. But was it Jay who handpicked Conan? I have heard Jay make references to the fact that he was forced out before he was ready to go, and I think the fact that he never really retired speaks to that.
  18. Heck yeah, buddy. Gotta love TV Ontario. I have similar memories of watching Elwy Yost, although mine took place a little bit later on than yours. Also, I never looked at the man the same way again after hearing the story of him going up to someone's cottage to go snowmobiling, but then he couldn't out on the sleds go because they couldn't find a helmet big enough for his giant melon. Really happened. As for old movies, Ms. Hux, I say go Audrey Hepburn, specifically Roman Holiday.
  19. It's how Elliott Smith killed himself. I can't fathom the amount of torment one would have to be experiencing in order to do that. As for Artie, I certainly wish him the best. As much as I find him obnoxious to watch/listen to/look at, obviously he is a man who desperately needs help, and has been for some time. There was a no-holds-barred article about him in Rolling Stone within the past year or so, where he talked about how his career was the only aspect of his life in which he even remotely had his act together, and how he would much rather be an anonymous plumber in Seattle than Artie Lange the millionaire comic. Hopefully this will be a turning point for him.
  20. We should all be so blessed as to live the kind of life that leaves a tribute like this in its wake. Sympathies, -Hart
  21. Sweet. I shall wait patiently for word on dissemination of said recording.
  22. Yes indeed. Josh and I were pretty good friends in my middle/high school days in Nepean. I still see him from time to time when I make it home, and he and in invariably sequester ourselves at whatever gathering we happen to be at so that we can geek out about whatever we're listening to at that point in our lives.
