  1. But, they DO need justification. If the world is content on sitting back and watching, there's no limit to the amount of evil that can be done. Imagine a world where Hitler's actions weren't considered unreasonable? Yikes. And he had the people themselves on his side! When it comes to the treatment of human beings, all actions need to be reasoned. Honestly, I don't really think Ahmadinejad's going to launch an all out offensive and wipe Israel off the map either, but his policies and position will continue to escalate the situation to frightening levels, and they by no means will pave the way for greater understanding and peace.
  2. As John Prine says, 'that's the way the world goes round'. Jesus H. Christ - what kind of quote is that from Nokia? We didn't do anything wrong, because torturing dissidents in Iran is legal. ? Brutal. I think i might join Twitter. Seriously.
  3. When i attack you for saying such things, i only do so because i feel bad for acting exclusionary. And then i'm brought to terms with why sometimes we have to be exclusionary. And then i stop insisting on things and accept what you're saying, because ultimately you're right. I go away... but in my away-ness, i'm closing my eyes and secretly wishing for a way to make us not so intolerant.
  4. SEA KITTENS! HAHAHAHAHA Something tells me Sir Paul is behind this.
  5. Awesome! I love crazy weather. If we had more of it around here, I'd be a storm chaser by way of trade. We get the odd tornado and water spout out on the lake. I once saw a boat get tossed down Rondeau Bay which was pretty crazy. We also once had a storm that hit Erieau (10 min away) which is a tiny little peninsula surrounded by Rondeau Bay to the north and lake Erie to the south and totally destroyed the village. We had a cottage there that i was at, alone. The front windows on the bay totally blew in and a tree crashed through the roof. It was pretty f'ing crazy. Afterwards I went outside to assess the damage to find the whole village doing the same... and the sight was something i've never seen. 40m tall trees that line the main boulevard of Erieau had totally uprooted, peoples windows were all blown in, cars demolished, hydro lines flapping wildly with electricity. I don't know what the f hit us that day, but it was intense! The village was without power for almost five days, and as there is only one road in/one road out, help didn't get there until day 2. It was the biggest mass community clean up project i've ever taken part in. But, the whole cops pulling a gun on you while during a tornado puts an interesting twist on things... eek!
  6. Time to take it to the streets!
  7. All true, but why do human right's agencies claim the situation to have worsened since Ahmadinejad's election? Khamenei has been supreme ruler since 1989. Although Khamenei has been particularly brutal towards the Bahai's. But to elude Ahmadinejad as powerless and therefore imply that he has no part in the crime... well. Well, you covered that with your last sentence.
  8. I work with a lot of free-lance writers and most of the 'good' ones charge by the word. The best we use charges us $1 per word, to give you an idea. Others charge by the length of the piece... 1 page, 2 page, etc. I would say it's pretty standard journalistic practice to charge by the word - start high - they're going to low ball you, for sure. I have no idea what your experience is, but if you have some experience that you can quote, i'd say $1 per word. You probably won't get it. But don't offer a $1 if you've never been published. Otherwise, go for 75 cents... you'll probably end up with 50.
  9. No, I say that like he's the person that has the power to stop human rights violations, and doesn't. Please tell me your second sentence isn't a justification.
  10. Whoa. Sorry for making you quote yourself Thorgnor, I should have looked in the first place. Whoa. Bloomberg's shutting down Broadway!! http://nymag.com/news/features/56794/ linked to from inhabitantdotcom. Thanks for sharing! Makes me want to get rid of everything I own and see how much I can replace with only recycled products. Fun!

There's this topic' date=' which is pinned at the top of the food forum. Aloha, Brad[/quote'] haha sorry meggo!
  12. Thanks for that link. I've now book-marked that site. Amazing stuff! I now want to live in a tree house. I used to think underground housing could do wonders as well... aside from all that digging. Cool blog http://webecoist.com/ - this is linked from the web urbanist site and is pretty cool as well.
  13. For what it's worth, I don't want to pick sides either. But it never was and never can be a good thing for anyone to bulk up their armies and flex their muscles to promote... peace. It's a pissing match, is what it is. You kinda like the guy? Really? Am I missing something, or is there something charming about denying a person or persons the most basic of human rights?
  14. My head is being filled with images of caves and tree-huts. The future seems uncomfortably exciting.
  15. Especially if you believe the proliferation of arms essential to maintaining peace. That's the equivalent to giving a person plenty of reasons to want you dead, and then handing them the gun and waiting.
  16. That you, M.O.B.E.? If you insist a strong Iran is essential to keeping and promoting peace in the region, you would have to agree US presence essential for the same. You can question the legitimacy of the state of Israel (as do I), but the bottom line is that they are still PEOPLE. People whose lives SHOULD be protected. If Ahmadinejad does not want to 'obliterate' Israel, he needs to stop using words like 'wipe Israel off the map'. He needs to be diplomatic, and not only to those he wishes to ally with. He needs to stop committing human rights violations and he needs to stop flexing his nuclear muscles. Frankly, it fucking scares people. It makes people question his motives and it decreases his legitimacy. I by no means want to threaten Iran and would love if 'we could all get along'. But that requires effort on both sides. If Iran continues to fund Hezbollah, they continue to fund a military group whose primary goal is to destroy the state of Israel... the past aggressions of which (and the alliance with Hamas) makes it appear to me, the outsider, that 'destroy' most likely won't come by way of peaceful treaty. The past aggressions of which are too fresh on too many people's minds to ever allow us to progress towards fostering "postive relations". Sure, Iran is standing up for themselves, but so's everyone else. I AM speaking of compassion and fairness here, and the bottom line that we're all just people trying to do as we see right. It's going to take the greatest communicator this world has ever seen to wade us out of this one... i think.
  17. Toot away Meggo! Fwiw, i'm sorry that CK council is composed of a panel of utter morons, spare one or two, who can't see beyond farms or unions to designate the chapel. i've shared some pretty infuriating back and forth correspondence with them. big picture seers, they are not!
  18. Brutal. This is an email from one of radio farda's contacts in Tehran.
