  1. d_rawk and i liked them at barrymore's a few years back. 2 cents!
  2. a rare appearance from the constable! nice thx AD. i like to get my back up pre-emptively, just in case and one thing - how would the gov't ban allergies and choking? maybe we should ban bikes. i got the wind knocked out of me once when i fell off my bike! like i said before - personally i don't see the need for anyone to have a handgun, save the cops. i think people should have freedoms, but handguns are one thing that it seems many people aren't bright enough to own safely [and i would include myself in that group too!].
  3. 1. maybe if the accomplice didn't have a gun, no one would have gotten killed. maybe. 2. of course it was an accident. i'm just saying that having a handgun is like playing with fire. in my opinion. i see what you're saying to PT, and ollie i know that banning handguns is not going to fix everything and protect everyone, it just seems like it would probably be a good step. in my opinion.
  4. i totally agree that this was a case of extremely poor judgment on the parents' part, and yes, even if guns are taken out of the equation, other bad things could happen, like drowning. but doesn't it seem like keeping a handgun in your home is exposing yourself and/or your children to an unnecessary risk? whether it sounds righteous or indignant or not, i have never heard of this kind of thing happening in canada [but i could be wrong, and it could just be a matter of time, who knows]. ugh. i hate guns. just yesterday in ottawa a guy was convicted - of manslaughter, of all things - for killing another guy with a sword in a children's park. of course this is awful, but i imagine if they'd all had guns it would have been a lot worse.
  5. "California High Court Upholds Ban on Same Sex Marriage" from the globe & mail The California Supreme Court upheld a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage Tuesday, but it also decided that the estimated 18,000 gay couples who tied the knot before the law took effect will stay wed. Demonstrators outside the court yelled “shame on you†The 6-1 decision written by Chief Justice Ron George rejected an argument by gay rights activists that the ban revised the California Constitution's equal protection clause to such a dramatic degree that it first needed the Legislature's approval. The court said the Californians have a right, through the ballot box, to change their constitution. “In a sense, petitioners' and the attorney general's complaint is that it is just too easy to amend the California Constitution through the initiative process. But it is not a proper function of this court to curtail that process; we are constitutionally bound to uphold it,†the ruling said. The justices said the 136-page majority ruling does not speak to whether they agree with Proposition 8 or “believe it should be a part of the California Constitution.†They said they were “limited to interpreting and applying the principles and rules embodied in the California Constitution, setting aside our own personal beliefs and values.†The announcement of the decision set off an outcry among a sea of demonstrators who had gathered in front of the San Francisco courthouse awaiting the ruling. Holding signs and many waving rainbow flags, they yelled “shame on you.†Many people also held hands in a chain around an intersection in an act of protest. Gay rights activists immediately promised to resume their fight, saying they would go back to voters as early as next year in a bid to repeal Proposition 8. The split decision provided some relief for the 18,000 gay couples who married in the brief time same-sex marriage was legal last year but that wasn't enough to dull the anger over the ruling that banned gay marriage. “It's not about whether we get to stay married. Our fight is far from over,†said Jeannie Rizzo, 62, who was one of the lead plaintiffs along with her wife, Polly Cooper. “I have about 20 years left on this earth, and I'm going to continue to fight for equality every day.†Also in the crowd gathered at City Hall, near the courthouse, were Sharon Papo, 30, and Amber Weiss, 32, who were married on the first day gay marriage was legal last year, June 17. “We're relieved our marriage was not invalidated, but this is a hollow victory because there are so many that are not allowed to marry those they love,†Ms. Weiss said. “I feel very uncomfortable being in a special class of citizens,†Ms. Papo said. The state Supreme Court had ruled last May that it was unconstitutional to deny gay couples the right to wed. Many same-sex couples had rushed to get married before the November vote on Proposition 8, fearing it could be passed. When it was, gay rights activists went back to the court arguing that the ban was improperly put to voters and amounted to a revision — which required legislative approval — not an amendment. That was the issue justices decided Tuesday. “After comparing this initiative measure to the many other constitutional changes that have been reviewed and evaluated in numerous prior decisions of this court, we conclude Proposition 8 constitutes a constitutional amendment rather than a constitutional revision,†the ruling said. Justice Carlos Moreno wrote the dissenting opinion disagreeing that the proposition did not change the constitution's equal protection clause. He said the law denying same-sex couples the right to wed “strikes at the core of the promise of equality that underlies our California Constitution.†He said it represents a “drastic and far-reaching change.â€

  18. i found the fiddleheads tedious and weird. but i should add - we made an aioli which was deelish! for use as a pasta sauce: 1. cook [on low] 3 tablespoons of garlic w/ 3 tbsp of olive oil [be really careful not to overcook the garlic!] 2. when the garlic is foaming and straw coloured [roughly 10 minutes] remove from heat 3. add some red pepper flakes, parsley, and 2 tbsp lemon juice to your cooked garlic 4. also add one more tbsp of garlic and 3 more tbsp of olive oil 5. toss with your pasta [we used spaghetti] -- you can add some pasta water or chicken broth to loosen up your sauce so yummy!
  19. what are you going to do with your fiddleheads?? i don't think i've ever eaten these in my life.

    Foie Gras

amen AD i don't get this - she didn't know how foie gras was produced? what a load of BS. i struggle a lot with the meat/no meat thing. i saw a documentary with some footage from a slaughterhouse and it was really awful. i try to buy from saslove's as much as possible b/c they seem to get their meat from good places, but to be honest i don't know for sure.. but i think in cases of foie gras and veal where i know, for sure, that those animals were treated badly -- personally i don't want to take part in that. did that make sense? i am tired.
