  1. Too bad about Wolf Parade going on "hiatus", because I really like their 2010 release, Expo 86. Living Proof by Buddy Guy is excellent, minus his duet with Carlos Santana. An indie album that caught me by suprise was P.S. I Love You's Meet Me At The Muster Station.
  2. I don't get the love for BSS's latest. It's pretty boring. Both the National and Black Keys albums are good, but not their best. The Dead Weather's Sea of Cowards deserves some love.
  3. I want the perps shot, or at least beaten by the 1975 Philadelphia Flyers.
  4. Same with Donnie, especially his work in Band of Brothers.
  5. The best combo actor-singer ever. It's over folks, game, set and match:
  6. I think he was, but he was very young in Rushmore and he's a Coppola (his mom is Talia Shire). I just found out that his brother is the lead singer for Rooney.
  7. Hugh Dillon has done better work as an actor than any of his solo stuff or with the Headstones.
  8. John Lurie is a heck of a musician (founder of the avant-garde jazz ensemble, Lounge Lizards) and a good actor, especially his work with Jim Jarmusch in Stanger Than Paradise and Down by Law.
  9. Zooey Deschanel's work in She & Him is pretty good. Sammy Davis, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson were good actors. Martin was excellent in Rio Bravo (with John Wayne and Ricky Nelson) and The Young Lions (with Brando). Bobby Darin, Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby could do it all too. I don't care for her films (or music) but Barbara Streisand is very talented.
  10. Roger Daltrey and Phil Collins are decent actors and I wish Hoyt Axton and Johnny Cash acted more. Oh, and Frank Sinatra was a good actor.
  11. like? Tom Waits' date=' David Bowie, Will Smith & Meatloaf are few I can think of. [/quote'] And Ricky Gervais was in a hilariously horrible new wave band.
  12. I've heard some of Seagal's "blues" tunes. He's almost as bad as the Tea Party. Didn't Seagal's band play in Gananoque a few years back? You can find some of his videos on youtube. Jason Schwartzman used to play drums in the good power-pop band, Phantom Planet. PP's lead singer, Alex Greenwald, was in the film Donnie Darko; he was Donnie's high school arch enemy. Anyone hear Scarlett Johansson's Tom Waits "tribute" album? She can't act or sing.
  13. what are your two favourites? I don't have any vintage posters (waaay to much money for the good ones by the Dead, Allmans, Hendrix). I have so many now and I need to do an inventory. I have two really great White Stripes posters, TAB from the early 2000s, Raconteurs, Black Keys, Avett Brothers, Mule (a gift from Booche and I believe, Davey Boy), Swell Season and I really like my B.B. King Molson Amphitheatre poster from 2000. I have a pretty nice Phil poster and an autograhed The Soundtrack Of Our Lives.
  14. The original theatrical posters (as seen in lobbies or outside the theatre) are often referred to as one-sheets. I've collected a few original one-sheets over the years: Evil Dead II, Donnie Darko, Bubba Ho-Tep, Bittersweet Motel, all three from LOTR. I'm now more into collecting limited edition concert posters.
  15. I'd love to be able to afford Forbidden Planet's original one-sheet:
  16. Not too long ago I re-watched Prom Night. Leslie plays a high school principal. It's a good low-budget Canadian slasher flick. I like Leslie's serious films such as the great Forbidden Planet and the decent disaster pic, Poseidon Adventure - and check out the a-hole he plays in Creepshow.
  17. That's good advice. Keep in mind HD signals via networks and local channels are not all the same, quality-wise. Many stations cheap it out and fool nobody with a good TV set. You can even flip between football games on Sunday and notice differences in the feeds.
  18. I have, and I also went with two friends that did the same.
  19. I more asked Pete if the one I was looking at was a good deal. It wasn't a 1080 and I wasn't sure if it was something I would miss. This is a second tv for the mancave that is our basement. We don't really game or watch blu-ray. Mainly for watching football on Sundays and keeping up with the odd tv show we watch. 1080p matters more the bigger your TV set. 720p is just fine for sets under 40-inches. Your eye won't be able to know the difference, as long as you avoid buying junk. TV networks at the most, send out signals in 1080i, but most are 720p or upconverted SD signals.
  20. I can name you 5 great indie stores that'll let you do what I suggested. I'm sure Ottawa has several as well, and any good store won't mark their product up that much if at all; however, indies lean towards high end.
  21. If you want to do serious tests, go to a good indie store in Ottawa. They'll be hooked up and the levels will be set right. I go to Best Buy from time to time and they suck at presentation. TV video levels are erratic, and it can't always be by coincidence.
  22. I was looking at this one earlier today... it has made the short list. Just HiFi will cut you deals too that are at least competetive. Keep your eyes peeled. Also' date=' taking Roller's cue, I'd also bring a good new release movie and test it on a bunch of TVs. If you go Blu-ray, all the better. I'd recommend District 9 since it's the best looking non-animated Blu-ray I've seen yet.[/quote'] I am all about the Blu-ray and I agree District 9 looks great in that format. And if you bring in a non Blu-ray DVD pre-2005, it'll look spotty on any TV no matter the set's price.
  23. I write a weeky music history article and my I dedicated my latest to Julia (it was posted today): This issue of This Week in History (in all its sarcasm, profanity and occasion bits of humour) is dedicated to my friend and fellow music lover, Julia McAllister, who unexpectedly passed away in her sleep while I was writing this article. Although her bright light may be physically extinguished from this earth, her soul and spirit will forever shine on. Here's a favourite quote of Julia's, from A Mighty Wind: "I suffered a lot of abuse as a child...mostly musical in nature..."
