  1. Kenny's a pretty easy target, but it's a good read. However, I can't say that I love it when Pat plays sax samples through that fucking Synclavier of his or when when he collaborates with a vocalist.
  2. I got the goods on the transfer fee. It's all pretty confusing, but Gerry Dobson was hosting Prime Time yesterday on The Fan and he said that MLS gets the 5 million, but then they send 3/4 of the money to the team for them to use towards improvements.
  3. Really? According to what I heard on CBC yesterday the Jamaican Track Federation does not test it's athletes. Of course they are subject to the testing done internationally at select events. I believe it's every international event, not just "select" events. Jamaica is an anomoly not only for testing, but in producing great sprinters throughout modern times. Hmmm.
  4. You are assuming that NBC showed the race at all. They haven't aired many big events live in the morning. Instead, they pretend that the event never happened and promo the hell out of it for their prime time coverage 12 hours later.
  5. That's what I'm doing too. I hope he's on the up and up. The one thing I like about Bolt is that he was tall and running really fast as a youngster, so he just didn't appear out of thin air and start winning races.
  6. Just as impressive as the 100 metre race.
  7. Bolt goes for double-gold at 10:20am on the CBC. I can't wait.
  8. Just to be safe, watch it on-line while surfing the TV channels for the game.

    Laser Eye

You have to investigate this fully. Laser-surgery comes with risks (there appears to be a growing fail rate since it's a releatively new procedure).and I wouldn't recommend going the bargain or good deal route. It's your eyes were're talking about. My sister went to the best laser surgery clinic in Canada and she now wears glasses and has lost her night-vision. You have to ask a trusted optomotrist and/or opthomologist about whether you are a suitable candidate or not. I've worn glasses for thirty years and I don't trust laser-surgery.
  10. I've dusted-off my red Canada t-shirt. I'm heading to the game after work tomorrow. It'll be tight making it for 7:30. Vicki will already be in the stands. Interesting talk tonight on The Fan with Gerry Dobson and Mo Johnson regarding BMO's field-turf amongst many things. Mo is pushing/wishing for a grass field, citing stuff that we already know: TFC is having trouble signing good players etc... Also, Mo said that most of the Canadian national team dreads playing on it, which of course doesn't really help with a home-field advantge. I belive the game is sold-out too with more of a pro-Canadian fanbase than Canada usually gets in Toronto.
  11. I'm going with Vicki. Stu and I don't talk. Andrew lives too far away and I don't think he's a soccer fan. Don Lucey is going and so are a few other people I know. I'm sitting in really good seats somewhere near the centre in one of the Team Canada fan zones. Lucey got free cheapo seats and he's going with a "real" Irishman.
  12. de Vos should still be playing for Canada. I really like this team. They don't play afraid and are really creative in the offensive zone, two qualities that usually weren't associated with Canadian football.
  13. I'll be at the game tomorrow. Canada should win even on a surface the players hate playing on: field-turf. I think the game is close to selling out - last week almost 19 thousand tickets were sold. According to de Vos and Craig Forrest (and many others), this is the best Canadian squad since the team that made the World Cup.
  14. I'm off that day and the 12th too. I'm in!
  15. I don't think that story is correct. From everything I've read in the local papers and the TFC message board, Toronto gets the money.
  16. I'll be on vacation this Friday but if I wasn't, I'd be all over this show. Great opener too: Bruce Peninsula. Cuff The Duke has really embraced jams in recent years, in particular swelling guitar-based groove jams a la Crazy Horse. You really can't go wrong with this band that should be bigger than they are, but they have lots of competition in Canada's very healthy alt-country/roots rock scene. Here's the particulars: Fri Aug 22: Hardwood Records Indie Folk Alt Country CUFF THE DUKE @ 11:40 Bruce Peninsula @ 10:30 with The Stables @ 9:30. $12.00 Adv @ Tm-Hs-Rt-Ss. $15.00 @ Door.
  17. I'm not a big fan of Toronto Star's Chris Zelkovich, especially during the hockey season, but he's been good with his Olympic media critiques. I didn't watch NBC yesterday morning, but I find today's report regarding yesterday's 100 metre final coverage incredible: Give CBC gold for live coverage of glamour event August 17, 2008 Chris Zelkovich The debate over showing Olympic events live or on tape has been raging for some time, practically as long as Bob Costas has been avoiding grey hair. Considering the results, mainly NBC's record-setting ratings for the Beijing Games, it seems almost pointless to knock the network's plan. In fact, delaying things by a few hours on a weekday makes some sense in maximizing the prime-time audience. But tape-delaying the biggest event of the Olympics, the men's 100 metres race, by almost 12 hours on a Saturday is not only disingenuous, it smacks of thinking from another century. And I don't mean the 20th century. While Usain Bolt was shattering the world record around 10:30 yesterday morning, NBC was showing the U.S.-Spain basketball game. While interest in the so-called Redeem Team is high, surely NBC could have broken into it for the race. Instead, it ignored the glamour event of the Games and ran a promo for its night-time coverage. Included in the promo was a nice feature on American sprinter Tyson Gay. What that feature didn't mention, of course, was that Gay had already been eliminated in the semifinal and that Bolt had already won the event NBC was promoting. That, of course, would have spoiled NBC's perfectly packaged coverage. On a day when Bolt's victory would be all over newscasts and websites instantly, it seemed like a silly decision indeed. That's why CBC's live-first philosophy (usually, anyway) won the day. It wasn't good just because it was live, either. The network did a great job of setting up the race. Olympic champion Donovan Bailey was candid and predicted that Bolt would not only win easily but would be under 9.7, which he did (9.69). ``Usain Bolt will have to fall on his face to lose," Bailey said. Track crew Mark Lee, David Moorcroft and Michael Smith then entered into a great discussion in the final call room, where sprinters wait to enter the stadium. "At this point, you have no friends, only enemies," said Moorcroft. Then Lee, who has been a little understated so far, hit all the right notes at the right pitch in a race that requires an economy of words: "Big strides, full speed, winning easily. Stopping the clock in a world record, 9.68 (later rounded up). No man has ever run that fast on the planet. Sensational." Post-race coverage was equally solid, with a minimum of blather during the celebrations. As amazing as Bolt's time was, Smith perceptively noted that the Jamaican had dragged his toe out of the blocks and probably cost himself as much time as his premature chest-thumping did. It was all good, and all live, too.
  18. I think AD was being facetious
  19. Halladay pitched his 8th complete game tonight in Boston and the Jays win 4-1 (his shut-out was ruined in the9th win a lead-off homer). Goddamit I wish he had run-support this year: 14-9 would look more like 18-4.
  20. The fascinating thing is that Bolt eased up in ALL his heats.
  21. That was the final. The 4X100 final should be gift-wrapped with Jamaican colours. They had 3 men in the finals.
  22. That's the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Bolt jogged to the line AGAIN at 9.69. He embarrassed the field. He can run under 9.6 if he actually tried.
  23. Some reports were saying that scalpers were selling $500 tickets for $30 and they still couldn't unload them. I've been surfing some of the Buffalo forums and they are not impressed with everything Rogers.
