Jay Funk Dawg
I'm not sure of the status of Drums and Tuba, I hear they have cancelled their entire Canadian Tour, so looks like there is now an opening for a special surprise... I'll keep you cats updated. There is some discussion on the tickets sales, I mean last year you could see MMW on their own for the same price as the entire Evolve Festival. After some deliberation the Evolve Family decided that a modest increase in Ticket Prices will help keep the festival a sustainable event and give the festival the resources to keep it a world class festival for years to come. Check the Canadian Line-up of Bands, I mean these are some of Canada's Finest talent... and Evolve does a lot to support these groups and to get them in front of a larger audience. The Rheostatics (Toronto), Luther Wright and the Wrongs (Kingston), The Trews (Antigonish) Burt Neilson Band (Toronto), Stephen Franke and the Noises from the Toolshed (Victoria), Nero (Ottawa), Blue Quarter (Alberta), Caution Jam (Toronto), Threat from Outerspace (Vancouver), The Jimmy Swift Band (Halifax) Universal Soul (Halifax),Grand Theft Bus (Fredericton), Chris Brown and Kate Fenner (NYC), Hot Toddy (Fredericton), High Plains Drifter (Antigonish), Slowcoaster (Sydney, Cape Breton), Duane Andrews (St. Johns NFLD), Hu Noo (Halifax), The New Shady Groove (Brigton), The Mellotones (Halifax), Andru Branch and the Halfway Tree (Halifax), Fat Jebus (Fredericton) and much much more... see you there! Del
Drums & Tuba never had a Canadian tour that I was aware of... Just got an e-mail from them with their tourdates for the next month or two... No mention of Evolve or any Canadian dates. They played up here fairly recently, and they're not known for doing more than 1 tour a year up here... Where did you hear about a Canadian tour? dave-O
I, for one, think that ticket prices are fair and don't need to be justified. But here's what you need to explain to me - What's with all the talk of a "special surprise"? Is this an East Coast thing? The Shoreline festival in PEI did the same thing, adverstising "surprise" acts. Really, if more big name acts are planned shouldn't they be named to help sell tickets? Or is this just rumour-mongering to keep people talking?
guigsy
all the talk last year of a big surprise proved itself to be just that: a lot of talk. surprises are nice, but im not getting my hopes up. that being said, im liking this line-up a lot, and i am really liking the idea of an all-night band stage! count me in! already booked the days off work.. Jay Funk Dawg
all the talk last year of a big surprise proved itself to be just that: a lot of talk. I agree that there are a lot of rumour mongers, but with the shear size of this festival and the amount of artists that will be on hand surprises are bound to happen. Did anyone catch Booty Juice's Sax player play with Simply Jeff at Evolve 4? Or at Evolve 3 when the Slip's Barr Brothers played an improv set with DJ Mike Walsh? Or when Nero's Dave Lauzon sat in with The Slip? Evolve 2's Burt Neilson/Caution Jam super set? I can only imagine what is in store...
Jay Funk Dawg
oh yeah.. I forgot to mention that Luther Wright and The Wrongs featuring Chris Brown will be doing an kids only set at the Children's Pavillion that should be awesome.. bring on the kiddies. Jay Funk Dawg
Dave-O - I guess to fully answer your question, Evolve for one gets all types of offers well after we annouce the line up... and depending on how confident we are with the ticket sales and the draw of an artist it is possible to get "special surprises" In past years Evolve has announced "surprise" artists because we haven't been able to confirm some of the acts at press and flyer printing time, so I don't think that saying "surprise acts" is done to cash in on anything, it's just a way of saying we're working on something big, any we can only hope it comes through. Last year we were very close to having Brad and Andrew Barr (of the Slip) and a couple of jazz friends of theirs on board for a free-form improvisational set... but when it was looking like it was finnally coming together we realized that it was going to cost an insane amount of money just to fly them all up to the show... of course We'd rather pay the artists than the airlines... and so logistically it was not possible. What a surprise that could have been! I will definetly let you know if any large acts get added to the festival. But I will say this, because of the many years put in to establishing this festival, we will have some surprises on the way including collaborations between all types of Electronic and Live Artists, which I think is some very exciting sh!t! Jay Funk Dawg
oh yeah! can you feel the excitement? www.evolvefestival.com. EVOLVE Music and Awareness Festival Announces Line-Up (NOVA SCOTIA) – The 5th Annual Evolve Music and Awareness Festival will present its most impressive line up yet of internationally acclaimed and local artists on August 27, 28 and 29th, 2004 under the sun and stars of beautiful Antigonish, Nova Scotia Canada. Nestled in Sunflower Valley - a picturesque 225-acre paradise in Canada's Ocean Playground, Evolve 5 is a three-day music, camping and interactive extravaganza which will feature over 200 artists of every discipline showcasing a diversity of music styles, including folk, jazz, funk, electronic, hip hop, blues, rock, bluegrass, experimental and world music. Add to that a line-up of independent film screenings, the WEE ONES kid’s zone, dozens of mind-opening workshops and activities in the Awareness Village and you've got the most important green event of the summer. EVOLVE is about more than just really great music. It is our small but genuine attempt to inspire positive change in the world. And it's working! EVOLVE 5 welcomes musician, activist and poet Michael Franti & his hip hop and funk infused band Spearhead has been announced as the International headliner for this year’s EVOLVE Festival. Performers from across Canada include Hometown Antigonish Rockers, The Trews, who return to Evolve, this time with a national profile and Canadian radio hit single “Not Ready to Go,”; Toronto’s cult progressive-rockers The Rheostatics, who have over the course of two decades uniquely described the Canadian experience; NYC-based renowned singer-songwriter duo Chris Brown and Kate Fenner will once again serenade audiences with their funkified blend of folk-soul with a message; as will roots act Luther Wright and the Wrongs, known for their light-hearted blend of country, rock and bluegrass. Burt Neilson Band (Toronto), Stephen Franke and the Noises from the Toolshed (Victoria), Nero (Ottawa), Blue Quarter (Alberta), Caution Jam (Toronto), Threat from Outer Space (Vancouver) - it’s a literal who’s who of Canada’s club touring circuit. But wait there’s more!
