5-disc picks: Rainy Day Music

A grey day in the Hammer today, and I don't mind one bit. I've most always found these days to be beautifully sad, melancholy and bittersweet. Mind you, four days in a row of it gets pretty depressing but as a one-off, here's a day where - if I wasn't at work, goddammit! - I would probably play some of these 5 cd picks and just sit and stare like a zombie at the wet tree branches and enjoy the moist, cool breezes and think, about nothing in particular and everything at the same time.

Nick Drake - Bryter Layter

Joni Mitchell - Blue

Ryan Adams - Love Is Hell

Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight

Air -The Virgin Suicides (soundtrack)

I'd be interested in hearing your picks. It's been a while since we did something like this.

Have a great day! ::

  • tungstengruvsten - Cops & Softcore*
  • Carlos Santana & John McLaughlin - Love Devotion Surrender
  • Diesel Dog - Live At The Lanc
  • David Lindley - El Rayo-X
  • Xavier Rudd - Live At The Grid, B.C. Canada
  • Bela Fleck - Perpetual Motion

I also had John Coltrane - A Love Supreme in at the office for a day (one listen) before loaning it to a co-worker. In fact, I brought the Santana/McLaughlin in to loan to the same co-worker, after bringing in the Rudd both to listen to and to loan to her (I had recommended his upcoming Ottawa Blues Fest show to her), especially after finding out that she also plays didgeridoo (how many Romanian women do you know who play the didg?); talking about Rudd's music made her mention Shakti, and then we got talking about Santana and McLaughlin, which then made me think of "A Love Supreme"...

Aloha,

Brad

Pablo - lovely choices. Funny, I just played some selections from both those Frisell and Metheny albums you picked last night! Particularly, Metheny "One Quiet Night" track 2: "Song For The Boys". Isn't that just beautiful?

I also dig that Lanois cd, especially "As Tears Go By". What a gorgeous song.

marco- that is a beautiful song. I would have to put that metheny album up there with my favourites of his. I love his playing, but some of his stuff is a little too cinematic. one quiet night really captures the raw beauty in his playing and compositions. The whole thing was recorded by him in his apartment in new york. He plays a Linda Manzer baritone guitar tuned in some variation of a nashville tuning for every song. That guitar is so dynamic. huge bottom end and crystal highs. I'm digressing into guitar land. anyways... great cd. up there with Offramp and Bright Size Life, my other two favourite Metheny discs.

the track is called the power of one. the whole album is absolutely fantastic. Daniel Langois is a national treasure. The songs are all fantastic and the production is like everything he touches, pure gold.

Do you mean Daniel Lanois?

If so Dave I have a bunch of awesome live shows of Daniel Lanois ,let me know and when I get some more blank CDRs I can make ya some copies, all SBD and sweet as hell to.

I've seen him live numerous times and we used to see him at La Luna's shows hanging out once in awhile usually Doug Feaver or Fat Cats, really great guy to talk to and a very kind soul, you'd love his recording studio here in Hamilton,Grant Street Studios,a couple of us were there a few months back, unfortunatley myself & a female friend of mine got a little drunk and had to split...

...seems people get sketched by drunkards roaming around their studio...LOL
