I'd recommend American Beauty or Workingman's Dead, but he might really dig In the Dark too

Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, which focused on the group's country and folk roots. The two albums contained some of The Grateful Dead's most popular songs - "Uncle John's Band," "Casey Jones," "Sugar Magnolia" and "Truckin'", and were heavily drawn from in their concerts for years to come.

This is probably a very unpopular, but logical move.

When I was 12, I was given a tape of Skeletons From The Closet. It sounds crazy, but this is a very good compilation that gives a good cross-section of early material, including all the hits. Try this and if he likes it, then go to Workingmans Dead and American Beauty, because they might be too rootsy for a kid heavily into AC/DC

1. Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)

2. Truckin'

3. Rosemary

4. Sugar Magnolia

5. St. Stephen

6. Uncle John's Band

7. Casey Jones

8. Mexicali Blues

9. Turn on Your Love Light

10. One More Saturday Night

11. Friend of the Devil
