bONES
I'd recommend American Beauty or Workingman's Dead, but he might really dig In the Dark too Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, which focused on the group's country and folk roots. The two albums contained some of The Grateful Dead's most popular songs - "Uncle John's Band," "Casey Jones," "Sugar Magnolia" and "Truckin'", and were heavily drawn from in their concerts for years to come. TimmyB
I enjoy AC/DC, Kiss and The Grateful Dead, so there's hope for him yet. Get him a live disc set that you really enjoy as that's what the Dead were all about.
guigsy
being a kid who went from AC/DC & KISS to the Grateful Dead myself, i'd definitely say American Beauty or Workingman's Dead, as well. skeletons might also be a good spot to start an 11 yr. old. MarcO
It was "Without A Net" that kicked my 16 year old ass. Still does.
AdamH
Go for the gusto and give him Live/Dead. If he's into AC/DC he enjoys a kick in the ass, and as good as Without a Net is it doesn't have the same hoofing effect.

Europe '72, and Dick's Picks 15 (9.3.77) or Dick's Picks 10 (12.29.77)

StoneMtn
I would tend toward "Steal Your Face". Good ol' Dead, from the early days; and includes Truckin' which is always good for a newbie.

StoneMtn
Wow! I echo the cowboy's comments, though. Is that what it is really supposed to be? If so, can you only get that through Grateful Dead Merchandising? I think I know what I'll be needing for Chanuka...
purple foot
i think so. everyone who preordered it from the GD website got a slice. i've got one showing the stealie face on top of the organ and one of the dancers. pretty sweet. Palms
This is probably a very unpopular, but logical move. When I was 12, I was given a tape of Skeletons From The Closet. It sounds crazy, but this is a very good compilation that gives a good cross-section of early material, including all the hits. Try this and if he likes it, then go to Workingmans Dead and American Beauty, because they might be too rootsy for a kid heavily into AC/DC 1. Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion) 2. Truckin' 3. Rosemary 4. Sugar Magnolia 5. St. Stephen 6. Uncle John's Band 7. Casey Jones 8. Mexicali Blues 9. Turn on Your Love Light 10. One More Saturday Night 11.
