It's end-of-the-year list time. We've tackled shows and movies, so it's time for album releases and I'll get things started with my picks.

Wilco - A Ghost Is Born

Brian Wilson - Smile

Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News

Ben Harper & The Blind Boys of Alabama - There Will Be A Light

Rheostatics - 2067

Arcade Fire - Funeral (I haven't devoted nearly enough time to this CD yet)

Ron Sexsmith - Retriever

Bill Frisell - Unspeakable

(Side note - My personal album of the year is Joel Plaskett Emergency's "Truthfully Truthfully". It came out in 2003 but I didn't discover until well into 2004.)

Let's hear it.

I didn't listen to, or buy a lot of 2004 albums this year. Although not all are among my favourite artists , I know these CDs are good:

Van Lear Rose - Loretta Lynn

American Idiot - Green Day

Contraband - Velvet Revolver

With The Lights Out - Nirvana

Joyful Rebellion - K-OS

Rubber Factory - The Black Keys

Acoustic Citsuoca: Live At The Startime Pavilion - My Morning Jacket

DaveO after reading your list, I think maybe we need to start seeing other people. Ha ha............

Much like DaveO's list, these albums from 04 totally kick ass:

Ron Sexsmith- Retriever

Rheostatics- 2067

Modest Mouse- Good News.....

and I also had the pleasure of discovering Joel Plaskett this year (outside of Thrush Hermit anyway), and he is my New Artist of the Year (for me anyway) and I highly recommend both Truthfully Truthfully and Down at the Khyber.

Other notables from this year:

Cake- Pressure Chief

Beastie Boys- To the 5 Boroughs (maybe their best since Pauls Boutique)

From a Basement on the Hill- Eliot Smith

Bob Dylan- Bootleg Series Vol #6 (Live 64- its been around forever in various formats, but not sounding quite like this)

Interpol- Antics

Bedouin Soundclash- Sounding a Mosaic

And my #1 Album of 2004:

Franz Ferdinand- FF

Good thread Dave...........

hmm.. i didnt pick up a lot of new releases this year, i spent most of the time discovering the art of downloading and the beauty of live music, drowning in the slip, and going back in time getting sh!t that i should have had already.. but, of what i did manage to get my hands on, most of my favourite 2004's have been mentioned already...

wilco - a ghost is born

rheostatics - 2067

brian wilson - smile

nero - zedonk

also...

the golden dogs - everything in 3 parts

king cobb steelie - destroy all codes (its been in heavy rotation here lately.)

and after reading some of these, i just had to put on one of my favourites from 2003... plaskett's truthfully truthfully... love joel plaskett... hey sean, if you dont have it already, pick up In Need Of Some Medical Attention if you see it around, his first solo disc... kinda dark, lo-fi, but really good.

"honourable mention: Gov't Mule - Deja Voodoo"

You know what, exactly.

When I first listened to that album, I didnt care for it. Once I saw the cohesion from those 4 boys, I re-listened to it. That band is fantastic, as is that album. Cheers to buying it.

Gov't Mule were on fire this past fall-early winter tour.

Thanks for reminding me about that album NewRider. I am going to put it on after 11-13-97 Phish.

(Please, someone. Help me. I listen to too much Phish.)
