Good show so far but if I could, I'd reach into the radio and back into 1969 and KICK BOBBY'S ASS for singing songs like The Green Green Grass. ugh.

"1970 was a very magical year in my life. During the making of the 'After The Gold Rush' album in Topanga Canyon, California with Neil Young and our producer and brother in arms David Briggs, I did my first real acoustic guitar and piano session work. Neil lent me his cool Martin D-18 (which appears on the inside photo of the 'Gold Rush' album leaning against the wall next to him) to play on the record. Near the end of the sessions, Neil gave me this now historic guitar as a gift for my contribution and commitment to this landmark recording. It remains a treasured guitar, which I continue to play and cherish to this day. I knew that the soul and history of the D-18 would give me my best chance of doing Neil's songs justice. Also, David Briggs, my dear friend, producer and mentor, although no longer with us, perched his spirit on my shoulder and kept the music real..."

Years before his lengthy tenure with Springsteen’s E Street Band, Lofgren cut a dash through Neil Young’s After The Gold Rush and Tonight’s The Night, and now pays humble tribute to the man who gave him his first big break. Accompanied only by his own piano or guitar, Nils strips the likes of Birds and Harvest Moon to their bare bones, allowing his sweet voice to carry the tunes.

The simplicity of the performances is the real triumph, leaving the listener wishing that Nils had reined in the tendencies toward bombast on his own solo albums, notably Cry Tough and I Came To Dance, solid records spoilt by over-elaboration. Like A Hurricane, in particular, benefits from being presented as a sparse, desolate lament.

Young fanatics may grumble about anyone else tackling this material, but Lofgren arguably has a more intuitive feel for it than most, and he’s clearly a better singer. Much more than a lazy covers project, it’s an album that makes a true connection with both the subject’s and the performer’s pasts.

Check out this great alternate take of Like A Hurricane he did:

" Like A Hurricane " (22 MB, mp3)

This is an alternate version of Neil Young's classic song that I recorded on my recent CD; "The Loner - Nils Sings Neil". It's one live take on my Takamine run through a loop station, which allowed me to loop a rhythm progression and do an extensive jam in the solo section. Billy Wolf (who mixed and mastered the CD and this track) and I decided as a genre, to label it "jam folk". Hope you enjoy it. Peace and Believe - Nils

I think this must be the 1,000th time I've heard this in the last 13 years, and I'm still not tired of it. Thanks to the nameless NC hippies who recommended SCOTS to me at Deer Creek on '97 summer tour. They played the Horseshoe a week after I got back; I checked out the gig, and my life hasn't been the same since. Fuck yeah!

good ol' SRV :)

Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble's second album, "Couldn't Stand The Weather", recorded in 19 days and released in 1984, found the band riding the wave of Stevie's Bowie association and the success of their smouldering debut of the previous year - the trio were at the top of their game, and brimming with confidence. Hooked up with legendary producer John Hammond, they were booked into day-only sessions in New York's legendary Power Station studios, meaning they had to set up and take down their gear on a daily basis. The well-documented, self-destructive drink-and-drugs-fuelled mayhem was well underway too, but at this point, they could handle it. They were a Texas hurricane hitting the Big Apple. On the eve of the 20th Anniversary of Stevie Ray's tragic death, the album's been re-released as a Legacy Edition. It adds three previously unreleased bonus tracks from the 1984 Couldn't Stand The Weather sessions, four tracks previously released on 1999's Expanded Edition, and a live gig recorded in Montreal in August 1984. Remastering-wise, there may not be much in the way of drastic sonic alteration here to get our teeth into. Instead, we'll revisit this still-underrated record with an eye to which licks you can steal (NOTE: the timings mentioned are taken from the album tracks, not the embedded live versions), and to appreciate the powerhouse that was Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble at the height of their pomp once again.
