Booche
Jason Smith is still out there. Yay? Nay? I've always liked him but what does he have left?Gotta be more than what Commodore has left.
ollie
Smith played in 77 regular-season games for Philadelphia during the 2007-08 regular season, recording one goal, nine assists and 86 penalty minutes while leading the Flyers with 204 blocked shots and 142 hits. He added two assists, four penalty minutes and a team-leading 56 hits and 45 blocked shots in 17 playoff games during the Flyers’ run to the Eastern Conference final last season.I'll take it. Yay! Jaimoe
Nice pick-up. Good stay at home defenseman, a born leader and he's mean as cat piss - and is excellent in the playoffs.
dave-O
Smith was a beast in playoffs this year, played his guts out in his own end. Philly handed him the "C" before he had ever played a game for them, so you know what kind of character he brings.Between Smith and Volchenkov, Ottawa has 2 of the best shot blockers in the league. Jaimoe
Smith is also a punishing S.O.B. on the boards and in front of the net.By comparison, the toughest guy on the Leafs blueline is 18 year-old prospect Luke Schenn... and if he doesn't make the club, this may be the softest team ever assembled in the NHL's history... even softer than the Winnipeg Jets teams during the Mike Smith years. dave-O
I think the original question is still valid, though - Does Smith have enough left in the tank to bring that intensity over 82+ games?

dave-O
As soon as posted that question I realized the answer: "Don't sign a #4 or #5 guy and expect him to play like a #1 guy." So keep your expectations in check and Smith should turn out fine.

AD
It's looking more and more like a Murray kind of team. Lots of grit, lots of will, some skill. If they play as hard as he thinks they will, the grumbling in town will stop

Blane
in other news....The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed unrestricted free agent Brandon Bochenski to a two-year contract."Bradon is a proven player at the AHL level with more than 100 games of experience in the NHL," vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton said. "Adding him for the next two years continues to address our need to build organizational depth."Bochenski, 6-foot-1, 187 pounds, played in 40 games with Boston, Anaheim and Nashvile last season. He recorded three goals and 13 points in those games. He began the season with Boston and played in 20 games, recording six assists. He was traded to Anaheim on January 2 in exchange for Shane Hnidy and a sixth-round pick. Bochenski played in 12 games with the Ducks and scored two goals with a total of four points. He was sent to Nashville on February 26 in exchange for future considerations. He netted one goal and recorded three points in eight games with the Predators. He also played in three playoff games with Nashville. The Blaine, Minnesota native has played in 121 career NHL games with Nashville, Anaheim, Boston, Chicago and Ottawa . He has amassed 24 goals and 54 points.Bochenski was drafted by Ottawa in the seventh round, 223rd overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. So he's averaging less than 25 games per team right now. If he keeps this up he'll give Bryan Smolinski a run for his money!
