Andrei Markov is signed, sealed, and delivered! Four year contract, rumoured to be $5M per year, which makes him the highest paid player on the team.

Also signed in Andrei Kostitsyn's brother Sergei to a three year rookie contract.

During the intermission I was scouring the Habs websites, and Habsworld is reporting that the Habs have signed finnish forward Janne Lahti (25 years old, 6'2" 200lbs.). Details are few, and this article is the only one that mentions anything about this.

The Habs have until June 1st to sign Juraj Mikus or risk losing his rights.

Rumour has it that Pavel Valentenko, the top defenceman during the last World Junior Championships, has signed with the Habs and will be headed over from Russia for next season, most likely to play with the Bulldogs.

Habs draft preview

The Habs have 9 picks in this year's draft: two first round, one second round, two third round, one fourth round, two fifth round, and one sixth. Will they trade up? Will they trade picks for established players? I don't know, but I'm looking forward to the 22nd of June!

As a guy who's watched a lot of QJMHL the last two years, I think Angelo Esposito is going to be a steal as far as he's fallen in scouting. Much like Kessel last year he was an "early bloomer" and faced a lot of scrutiny in his draft year.

When it comes to the draft boys, your NHL aint my NFL.

Thanks for the insight, Einstein. Sure the draft is more important in the cap era, but other than a handful of players each year, they're drafting kids who won't make an impact for 5 years.

The Habs have signed Russian defensive prospect Pavel Valentenko to a three year deal, and are rumoured to be close to signing their top defensive prospect, also a Russian, Alexei Emelin (or Yemelin, depending who you believe).

Remember those jokes when everyone called the Red Wings the Red Army because there were so many Russians on the team?

Well odds are pretty good that in about two or three years time the Habs will have Markov, Valentenko, and Emelin on defence, and Grabovki and the Kostitsyn brothers as forwards... That's six very talented Russians! Factor in Kovalev and Perezhogin as well, and that's a possible 8 Russians on the team.

SAMSONOV TRADED!

Gainey has traded Sergei Samsonov to the Blackhawks for defenceman Jassen Cullimore and forward Tony Salmelainen.

The move is basically a salary dump of sorts as Montreal has already come to terms with Cullimore to buy out his contract which is almost half of what Samsonov would have earned.

Salmelainen will be "evaluated" in the next couple of days. I'm guessing that he will be trade fodder at the draft.

Another Russian bites the dust.

The Habs top non-junior defensive prospect Alexei Emelin has signed a two year deal with a Russian Super League team. Given that the Habs need to sign him by next year or lose his rights, his future with the Habs don't look very bright... unless he pulls a Malkin.

WARNING: Over-analysis of the Habs contained within this post caused by boredom at work.

The Habs organization is looking weak defensively... Odds are that they will lose UFA Souray after the Timonnen signing yesterday raising the bar and that's the start of their problems. The Habs might not have anybody in Hamilton ready to jump into the Habs line-up this spring to fill the probable gap.

The two top prospects, J-P Cote (LD) and Dan Jancevski (LD) are also UFA come July 1st. Cote was pegged to make the Habs last year, but got hurt during training camp, and that was it. Jancevski was the best defenceman for the Bulldogs this year.

Word is that it's unlikely that either one will be re-signed.

Other veteran prospects in Hamilton include Andrew Archer (RD), Mathieu Biron (RD), and Andre Benoit (LD). All are RFAs and arguably career AHLers.

There's talk that 6'5" Ryan O'Byrne (RD) might make the jump after only one season in Hamilton to fill the 7th D-man role.

Russian signee Pavel Valentenko (LD) also has an outside chance of playing for the Habs, but will most likely need a season in Hamilton to adapt.

Mathieu Carle (RD) is Hamilton bound.

Currently the D corps looks like this:

1-2 Markov (LD)/Komisarek (RD)

3-4 Bouillion (LD)/Dandenault (RD)

5-6 Streit (LD)/Gorges (LD)

7 ?

It's clear that Gainey will have to pull the trigger on some sort of trade or UFA signing to replenish the stock. He has the luxury of having an abundance of speedy forward prospects that he may swap for a good defensive prospect.

EDIT: Andre Benoit signed with a team in the Finnish League for a year, so he is out of the picture for next year.

The two players that the Habs got in return for Samsonov, Jassen Cullimore and Tony Salmaleinen, have been placed on waivers. If Gainey manages to pursuade someone to pick up those contracts then he is a genius!

The Habs also gave qualifying offers to 13 of their 14 RFAs. Only Michael Lambert didn't make the cut, but that's no big loss.
