What movie did you watch on Halloween?

Although Halloween is a relatively uncelebrated holiday in the UK, I got together with a few fellow expats to watch some scary movies... OOooOoOooOooo....

We started by watching the classic Tim Burton film Sleepy Hollow. Mildly scary, definitely creepy (it's Tim Burton afterall), it made for a fun start to the evening.

Now the main event was supposed to be The Exorcist, but some girls we were with were too scared to watch the movie. We instead rented a flick called The Hostel.

Pros: The first half of the movie is essentially a softcore porn, some entertaining gore.

Cons: The second half of the movie is lame, ending comes out of nowhere like they ran out of budget or something.

Definite boo.

Then the original Nightmare on Elm Street came on TV, which would make it two movies with Johnny Depp on Halloween... Scary.

After all this Andrea and I had to walk to the train station through a foggy fall night, eerily reminiscent of the Thriller video. Good times!

I watched the first 4 edisodes of the Twin Peaks first season and a couple of episodes of the first season of Carnival, while my next door neihbour (who I'm assumming is a drug dealing gangster) had a raging party till 5 in the morning and set off 30 firecrackers in the driveway, on a Tuesday, in a 4-plex, in Nanaimo... :o

If that isn't scary I don't know what is. ;)

Carnivale is a fantastic and fantastically creepy series. I love Clancy Brown's Brother Justin character. Adrienne Barbeau still has 'it' too. Gotta love Toby Huss (voice of Cotton Hill and Kahn from King Of The Hill) as Felix 'Stumpy' Dreifuss - the girly show ring master.

The lead character "kid" was he in "Katz and Dog" or somesuchshit in the 80's or am I way off base?

Who? Nick Stahl who plays Ben Hawkins? I don't think so. He'd be too young to be in that movie and I just did quick IMDb check and his first movie came out in 1991. Stahl was in Sin City and was the lead character in Terminator III.

I've heard that Hostel is dreadful. Too bad because I really liked Eli Roth's first film Cabin Fever. Tim Burton is a great flawed director. For every masterpiece like Big Fish and Ed Wood, he puts out a Planet Of The Apes and the terribly disappointing and predictable Sleepy Hollow. Note to Burton: DO NOT cast famous actors for every crucial part because you know that they will surface at key moments later on - see Miranda Richardson.

I actually re-watched Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban on Halloween night. My friend is hooked on the books and wanted to watch the film for the first time. I think that particular interpretation is the most interesting and entertaining of the films so far - especially when compared to the excellent books.

Freddy vs. Jason. Same problem with almost every other modern day horror flick -- uninspired, paint by numbers script. I mean, if you're going to go to the trouble of producing a film then why not make it the best it can possibly be? Especially with two franchise characters like Freddy and Jason.

In the end it wasn't the worst horror movie I'd seen but could and should have been ten times better.
