the who at the acc last night ...

I arrived home from work last night after a busy day to find out that a friend of mine had just received 4 free tickets to go to The Who concert in Toronto. He asked if I wanted to go and I said "yes" so ten minutes later I was in his car on the way to Toronto with him, his brother, and his son (12 years old and a big Who fan).

It was a good show with good sound, and was very enjoyable, but nothing spectacular in my opinion. Certainly not worth anywhere close to the $200+ face value of each ticket. And they were really good seats, but nowhere near the best seats in the house. I couldn't help but think of the face value of my ticket, look around at the packed ACC, and do the math.

Having said the above, it was definitely fun watching and listening to Pete play guitar, and he had lots of positive energy last night. And I really dug the jam out of My Generation.

What else can I say? I feel lucky to have a friend who thought of me when the free tickets landed in his lap, and the concert was definitely worth the money I spent on it! OK, maybe just worth it when the price of beer at the ACC is factored in!

Was anyone else there?

Peace, Mark

I had a good time but it was too bad Roger wasn't in top form. The Sisters Euclid kicked ass afterwards though!

I agree ... Roger's voice was definitely in rough shape because of his cold. In contrast, I thought that Chrissie Hynde's voice sounded great.

Sorry I didn't bump into you Velvet ... that would have been a nice surprise. The Sisters show was out of the question for me given the group I was travelling with. Some day I will see that band!

Peace, Mark

I was there.

I had fun, but Roger definitely had some trouble hitting the high notes.

I also realized that this band is just on the verge of doing the casino-circuit, when the guy behind me yelled at the guy in front of me to "Sit down!".

I'm glad I went, but was certainly not blown away.

During Won't Get Fooled Again the guy in front of me, who was sitting with his girlfriend, got security and asked them to get the people in front of them to sit down. At this point in the show everyone, and I mean everyone was standing up. Security just sorta shrugged and left. They came back and offered them different seats I think, but they stayed where they were.

The whole "sit down" thing really burns me. I have travelled all over Canada and the US and theonly place I get told to "sit down" at a high energy show is in Toronto.

Whatis the deal?!!!?? I mena this has happened to me at Jeff Beck, Phil & Friends andmnay others..

WTF!!???

The sma eshow in the US everyone is on htier feet from the word go...

The older crowd in Toronto needs to loosen up and live a little.

It's a big rock show..

P.s. $200 bucks for a severly watered down version of the WHO is waaaaaaaay too much. Highway robbery!

waiting in a line with 8,000 people for the first "final" Who tour tickets, I got stabbed and hit by a car and waited 9 hours in cold drizzle for Grey section nosebleed seats (1981 or so I think?)... took those factors as pretty obvious omens and made sure that was my last "final" Who tour concert... that and the band played to the tv cameras and didn't really pull out anything special other than perform their quite old popular material exactly the same as they'd written it originally, no signs of growth from the band as a whole imo... though I enjoyed Townsend's energy that show as well

glad people had a decent time

jaimoe, i can't believe you didn't go!

And I didn't go to The Mule either. The Slip better be fucking good this Saturday.

Seriously, I like Roger & Pete's new album, but not enough to shell out the dough for a concert featuring my second and least favourite Who members.

Hey Brad, I'd be interested in your take on the show.

I took a look at the setlist and I think it's a carbon copy of the Ottawa show back in September. i.e. no Quadrophenia

The Ottawa stop was probably the best show I saw all year so I'm surprised to see so many lukewarm reviews.

Those of you who attended:

You'll recall that Pete Townshend's brother was on stage with a guitar in hand. Am I the only one who thinks that guitar was not running through any amp whatsoever?

Anyone know anything about him, or is it just as I suspect that he said, "Come on Pete, I've always wanted to be in The Who. This is probably my last chance. Pretty please!"

Roger started off by saying he had a cold and couldn't sing well. He was right. I think he maybe shoulda cancelled the show but as I was an out-of-towner I'm glad he didn't.

As an aside, a big thanks to Basher for setting us up in a great room for an unbelievable price.

I highly recommend y'all try out his pricebashing.

If I'm not mistaken, Simon Townshend is an accomplished musician in his own right, if not quite as famous as his brother.

I had a ball at the show. They played all the expected hits, and featured a lot (all?) of the new album. The encore was a huge chunk (20 mintues?) of "Tommy" (with "Pinball Wizard" leading it off). The band was spot-on, especially Zack Starkey's drumming, which was thunderous. Pino Palladino was great on bass, and Simon Townshend filled out the guitar part of the soundscape. (StoneMtn, you may be right: I don't remember hearing much of Simon's guitar, but that may have been the mix. Simon Townshend is a solo artist, too, so I don't think Pete would have put him in the band if he didn't think it was good/useful.)

Musically, it was The Who: wall-of-sound power pop done right. As for a set list, I didn't keep track, but I remember "I Can't Explain" was the opening song (we were coming in during it), and I know they did "You Better You Bet", as well as all the hits (and the new stuff). I think it was about a two-hour show.

I liked the visuals, too. I think the animated images they were putting up on the screens had more content than, say, just geometrical lazers and lights.

I'm glad I went. All told, my musical weekend went like:

  • Friday, Dec. 1: Donavon Frankenreiter Band, opening for
  • Friday, Dec. 1: Gov't Mule (two sets)
  • Saturday, Dec. 2: Anike, opening for
  • Saturday, Dec. 2: Mr. Something Something (two sets)
  • Monday, Dec. 4: The Who
  • Monday, Dec. 4: Sisters Euclid (one-and-a-bit sets)

I think this may have been one of the better musical weekends for me in 2006. :o

Aloha,

Brad
