The Chameleon
[color:brown]So usually all the praise and fame goes to the shredders and the lead players but where we would be without the masters of groove who strum it out and lay the foundation. So who are your fav. rhythm guitar players.... Right off the go I pick... Jimmy "Chank" Nolen (James Brown's guitar player..basically invented funk guitar) and of course... Bob Weir..(a little eratic in the early years but Bob became a master of syncopation, oddball voicings and slinky riffs masterful woven in the groove..) your pics?.,.. Jaimoe
Off the top of my head:Pete Townshend - no one comes close in my books for shear power, style and in reinventing rock rhythm guitar playing. Keith Richards/Brian JonesRay DaviesChrissie HyndeBob WeirDanny WhittenIzzy StadlinKurt CobainJoe StrummerDave Matthews...and virtually all good jam band lead guitarists - they all play excellent rhythm guitar when needed. Jaimoe
I'd like to add Paul Simon and James Hetfield too. Edited August 9, 2007 by Guest

boiler
I hate Paul Simon, but I guess I can see why he'd be on the list.John Lennon was pretty good too, for a Beatle.Angus Young is another pretty good one.I don't know if you'd consider The Edge a rhythm guitarist, I think you can. The Edge is one of the greatest guitar players period. Edited August 9, 2007 by Guest
Jaimoe
Actually, Paul, George and John were all great rhythm and lead guitarists. Paul obviously still is.

Hal Johnson
Id say Keller is a pretty awesome rhythym guitarist. His style is very difficult to emulate, to me anyway. Leo Kottke is pretty wicked too.
AD
Bachman is a ridiculous and totally underrated guitarist. I can't stand a lot of the stuff he's written, but when he's on stage or even just noodling on his radio show, the man has a huuuuuuuge amount of skill, and pulls it off with great style and texture.
