Montreal might not be a good memory for British (sic) American punk icon Iggy Pop and his band The Stooges after their instruments and gear were stolen following a weekend performance.

According to the band's road manager, Eric Fischer, the gear and instruments were worth tens of thousands of dollars.

The truck holding the equipment was stolen from outside the hotel where the band was staying on Monday following a concert the night before.

The missing items include "priceless" vintage instruments, Fischer told the Detroit Free Press. He singled out bassist Mike Watt's Gibson guitar, which he has used since he played with the Minutemen in the early 1980s.

"That bass would go in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame some day if we could find it," Fischer said. "We're all just gutted."

The 61-year-old Pop and his band are in the midst of the North American leg of an international tour. The band would continue on, Fischer said, including playing a gig in Toronto on Wednesday using rented and donated equipment.

i didn't say someone has to sleep in a van full of gear...lol

security guards...ever heard of them? they watch buildings, parking lots, etc. i'm sure they could watch a van. maybe a hundred or two per day but they can afford it. (little local bands, yeah not so much)

Iggy Pop and the Stooges will play tonight at Massey Hall, despite having had their instruments and stage gear stolen Monday night in Montreal.

"It's happening. They're replacing their instruments with rentals," said a Massey Hall spokesperson yesterday.

"They (the band) have already lined up some replacements and the show will go on," confirmed Live Nation spokesperson Kathy O'Donnell.

Montreal police have recovered the stolen rental truck, but the tens of thousands of dollars of equipment inside is long gone.

A police spokesperson said the truck was found empty several blocks from the hotel where it was stolen. Police said most of the equipment was marked with serial numbers, making it difficult to resell.

Bassist Mike Watt bemoaned losing his long-time Gibson, but told the CBC: "Her last gig was smoking. Igg was going off and the Montreal people were pumped up."

The reviews in the papers and on-line for last night's "rented-gear" show at Massey Hall have been outstanding. Even a hard-to-please friend of mine fucking loved the show.

Here's the setlist:

"Loose"

"Down On The Street"

"1969"

"I Wanna Be Your Dog"

"TV Eye"

"Real Cool Time"

"No Fun"

"1970"

"Fun House/LA Blues" (or at least a jam that was LA Blues-esque)

"Skull Ring"

"Search And Destroy"

"My Idea Of Fun"

"I Got A Right"

Encore:

"Trollin'"

"Little Electric Chair"

"Little Doll"

"I'm Fried"

I met Mike Watt at the Foo Fighters/ Hovercraft show at the Opera House gig in 95 (Watt was on bass, with Grohl and Eddie Vedder along with a drummer). He signed my ticket stub and was a great guy chatting for about 10 minutes with me and a friend after that show.......... Too bad, I hope things get found.

I've a;ways been a big Mike Watt fan. I really wanted to go to that show. For some reason by the time that I heard about it it was sold out.

He's got a Sistas in the Pit sticker on his guitar pictured above. They opened for the Stooges in Boston when I saw them last year. I was pleasantly surprised.
