Yes, that is fair.

I mean if thousands and thousands of people love the band, then do they really suck?

Yes, absolutely. The people have no taste.

I can hate a popular band, but can I really say they suck?

Yes, in fact they suck more than if they were unknown.

Hope this helps!

And to answer your question, I think that the majority of the people who listen to music are only exposed to mainstream, and therefore their taste in music ends there. With the massive epidemic of homogeneous radio stations the problem will get worse. Craptacular bands like Theory Of A Deadman and Simple Plan will continue to have tremendous CD sales, and there is nothing that Phish can do about it.

Oh, I love these kind of discussions because I'm very proud of the fact that I love a lot of bands that other people think suck. [big Grin]

Cases in point:

  • I love Great Big Sea.
  • I REALLY love Dave Matthews Band (although admittedly I think they peaked for me about 3 or 4 years ago, but I'll still drive to Buffalo to see them.)
  • One of my absolute favorite bands ever (Emerson Lake and Palmer) recently came in 2nd in Blenders "Worst Bands Of All Time".
  • I'm UNBELIEVABLY excited about seeing Styx at Casino Rama on November, particularly because I think they are extremely entertaining with Larry Gowan singing the Dennis DeYoung songs - although I love Dennis too. [Wink]

As we all know, there are lots of people in the world who think Phish or the Dead suck. There are also people who think squash tastes good or that trickle down economics works. Hey, I think all these people are wrong, but they probably don't like some of the things I like either - particularly some of the things listed above. [Wink]

The point here, in addition to opening myself up to endless abuse, is that I've always believed there is an audience for most kinds of music (and most things in general, particularly when you're talking about art), and the fact that musicians are able to connect with that audience is really the goal. PalacePrincess made a good point about Sex Pistols - although I enjoy some other punk bands, personally I could never get into the Pistols, but I can totally understand how people can because they deliver what the set out to deliver. And I can understand how people can be into new country or Celine Dion or other things I really don't have the time of day for, because that's what they're looking for.

Now, I _have_ seen a few bands in clubs and such that I really thought had NOTHING to offer in the way of either technically ability or entertainment value (except perhaps ironically) but I'd actually reverse Brad's rule and say 90% of everything doesn't suck to somebody, somewhere.

That said, I'm still gonna make fun of new country and Celine Dion. [Wink]

Peace,

Mr. M.

The Cheese suck and they're popular- so yes.

On the other hand Hall & Oates are popular but don't suck- so no.

Great Big Sea obviously suck.

I think the big dilemma is if we are actually in the latter of the two groups

quote:

the joe six pack who listens to pop radio and knows all the tunes that are played 10 times a day, and then there are music aficionados (usually self described)

how can we proclaim to listen to shitgrass and call ourselves music afficianados. Music afficianados are people who read Pitchfork (not get roasted by them), people who discover bands like Broken Social Scene, people who know when tradition is being expanded upon and broken with not farted around with and pureed into baby food.

"shitgrass "

I laugh whenever I see or hear that label........

BUT, I see some contradiction here:

Music afficianados are people who read Pitchfork (not get roasted by them), people who discover bands like Broken Social Scene, people who know when tradition is being expanded upon and broken with not farted around with and pureed into baby food.

And then:

Hall & Oates are popular but don't suck.

I guess there is only a contradiction if you see yourself as a music afficianado cause,

Your favorite band reeeeeeeally sucks........

Well, i think they suck.

It's reasonable to say that you don't like something. It is not reasonable to cast a subjective opinion as an objective fact.

(Unless, of course, the band really does *suck*. Or you're talking about vacuum cleaners. Or aardvarks. Or octopii. I like octopus sushi, but hey, the things are covered with suckers. Mmmm, Chupa Chups ...)
