Phish 3D

Do you think they'll be showing it in TO once it's fully released?

I'm not optimistic about that. This is the same company that did a DMB 3D movie last year (I think) and I don't know that that played in Toronto.

Plus' date=' Trey used to smoke weed in Toronto, so I doubt his movie will screen there.[/color']

Looks like we may get the shaft after all.

via Yemblog:

Briefly: Phish 3D Cities Revealed

We’ve known for a few weeks at which theaters the Phish 3D movie would play on premiere day – April 20, but up until now the cities where the film will run during its national release the week of April 30th weren’t known. Our friends at Consequence of Sound have posted a list of the cities where the film about last year’s Festival 8 will be shown, so READ ON to find out if Phish 3D is playing in your neck of the woods…

Now, keep in mind that this list refers to the major market near where the theaters are located. For instance, this list says New York, NY, but if you enter a NYC zip code into the Phish 3D Theater Locator you’ll see that the film is playing in Edgewater, NJ, White Plains, NY, Hicksville, NY and Holtsville, NY. Be sure to use the Theater Locator to find out the exact theater.

Here's the other side to that coin.

Sound quality was fucking insane. Perfect, dialed in, almost like the distributors EQ'd the theatre. You are INSIDE the music when you see this movie. At times the mix is a little burpy; some of the crowd surges seem overwrought and too loud, but this is really nitpicky. A+ sonic experience.

3D is really fun throughout, and fucking amazing in places. There's one shot where you're standing between Sharon and Sheila and Trey's looking up at both of them from midground with a blissed out look in his face and in far background you can see the crowd going off. The whole theater cheered. There's one shot where the camera rig circles Trey and it looks like you're playing a video game. The glowsticks cascading from the sky and balloons bouncing all around really pull you in and you will, at times, feel like you're at a show.

Content-wise, you are. This movie is 2 hours and 20 minuets of wall-to-wall music. There are no interviews; there's no setup; there are only a few brief interludes when Phish is not on a stage playing, and those are rehearsals with the backup players and maybe 2 minutes of festival atmosphere.

I thought they made great choices about what songs to include, based on what was well-played over the course of the weekend. I'm not gonna rate the music because you know how it sounded, other than to say that Undermind is better everytime. It's become a legit Phish crowd-pleaser.

The gear porn. Oh, my, the gear porn. If you geek out over spit-polished stage hardware, bring jerk lotion. You can read labels on knobs. That's all I'm gonna say about that.

Do not count on seeing yourself unless you were pretty close to the stage. There are a few sweeping crane shots, but even they were restricted to the closest few thousand to the stage. There are many shots of classic CA wook types with thousand yard stares down in front that will inspire laughter.

Overall, while not surprised to see the movie taking some flack here this morning (this board slags everything), it's clear that some of you need to put Phish down and go away for a while. 3D is a faithful and unique representation of what this band is today for both better and worse, and if you weren't seriously entertained and blown away at times, you've lost that loving feeling.

I'm pretty pumped to see this. When I was at Alice in Wonderland in 3D the other night, I found myself constantly thinking about how awesome Phish 3D will be.

That having been said, I think there is a bit of cause for concern in the link Booche posted. Two things that really annoy me in music DVDs are when: 1. The video and audio are deliberately out-of-sync, and 2. When the film is over-edited and you can't ever focus on one musician for more than a couple of seconds. It sounds like this movie might be guilty of the second of these. It would be a bummer to have this dazzling concert experience in 3D, but not be able to really watch any of the four of them work their magic. Let's leave the quick cuts to four-minute music videos, shall we?

Either way, though, I fail to see how I can come away from this not being incredibly entertained. Hoping that a Denver show gets announced soon.
