its crazy that the model makes twice as much as the photographer.....

and i also dont believe that there is a need for that much make-up for a photoshoot... actually, im positive there isnt.

meggo, no need to apologize, you didnt say anything wrong.

and for the record, she is a tasty little morsel! :D

so while avril may not be my personal preference in music, i'm proud that a bratty little teenager from napanee, ontario took the international music charts by storm, and didn't need to use her beauty to do it. and she is totally a little hottie -- i'd do her!

Waitaminute. Doesn't the fact that you and quite a few others have mentioned how hot she is mean that her beauty had at least some part in her success?

I agree that she's a better role model that most image-driven popstars but she's still image-driven. I'd be impressed with her if she had just turned down Maxim.

I second that! Palace Princess and Meggo u girlzzz rock!

So does Avril by the way, if only for the fact that she's on the cover of Maxim wearing more cloths than any other cover girls I've seen in that mag.

Not that I have anything against half naked girls, but way to go to Avril for doing it her way!!!!!

That's cool!

heeheehee, thanks ladies! i heart you too.

well, what started this whole thread is the subject of her appearance, so my throwing that part in there about her being a hottie was really just in response to the original remarks about her being "ugly". but to answer your question, of course it did! she's an attractive young woman in an industry that practically revolves around the way people look. so definitely, her looks have attributed to how well known she is. think about the hordes of people who know who avril lavigne is but don't listen to her music. if she was ugly or plain looking, none of those people would even give her a second's thought (and if you're trying to become a celebrity superstar, the more people who know about you, the better). the difference with avril is that she's not using how pretty she is as her major selling factor. if anything, she's downplaying how attractive she is, dressing as she damn well pleases (or having it appear that way), and sending a message that you don't have to be oiled up in a bikini and sitting on a silver platter to be beautiful. she's got an edge because she chooses not to look like every other pop star out there.

I agree that she's a better role model that most image-driven popstars but she's still image-driven.

any celebrity venture (espeically pop music) is image-driven -- but at least the image she conveys is "who gives a fu©k with cosmo says, dress however makes you feel the best". and just as important, that you can still be totally hot without having your ass hanging out all the time.

I'd be impressed with her if she had just turned down Maxim.

chances are, she probably has in the past. and if we were talking about playboy or something, then i may even be inclined to agree with you. but posing for maxim -- especially at this stage of her career -- is different. for one thing, she's already known for NOT sexing herself up, so any deviation from that is going to draw a lot of attention (and sell a lot of magazines). maxim magazine IS a big ol' book of sex, but it absolutely adores, respects and celebrates women, rather than exploiting them. yeah, their pictures are sexy, but so are the women in them! there's nothing wrong with celebrating your sexiness, and as these pictures show, avril is managing to do so in a tasteful fashion -- as voodoolady pointed out, she's baring a lot less flesh than most of the girls you'll see in there. (in fact, the only times i've seen girls come across as truly trashy in maxim is when they do in every other magazine they appear in -- i.e. christina aguilera). in addition, while maxim may publish pictures that are pretty much exclusively of a racier theme, they are also always accompanied by flattering interviews with the girls they feature -- i can't even tell you how many actresses up & coming today i remember first seeing in maxim and being impressed with the way they were portrayed. so for avril to pose is a good career move, and she's still managing to stick to what she believes in & keep her clothes on (AND look ultra sexy at the same time).

sorry i seem to be flying off the handle here, i'm sure some of you are downright bewildered with how much i'm going off on something that may seem silly, but geez, it just pisses me off that pictures of women who choose to present themselves as freakin' MEAT have guys around here slobbering all over themselves (i.e. that nasty ass contest picture that was posted awhile back, all but a few threads of fabric away from being a full on display of beef curtains ), heady epic's disgusting, chauvanistic posts that show absolutely NO respect for women whatsoever have people high fiving him and going on about how "awesome" and "funny" he is, and now all of a sudden, a FULLY CLOTHED avril lavigne is "trashy" because she's in maxim and wears dark eyeliner????????? geez!

Seeing as it was I only that made the trowel remark,I shall reply to your comments....

so those "natural" looking girls you see, still have a trowel or two slathered on).

Obviously.

And that why it does nothing for me.Simple isn't it?

Natural is not in a magazine....you know that right?

secondly, have you ever picked up a copy of maxim before??????

Nope.I don't waste money on those things.Nor do I buy porn mags,I get enough real sex without needing to buy porn.Again, all air brushed and phony. Also rather simple.

I like real women,in the flesh.

avril lavigne may be a manufactured pop star (she doesn't write most of her music, in fact, she doesn't even write all the lyrics), but at least she's trying to have her own style -- a style that DOESN'T focus on boobs, ass & grinding.

Actually she has written some lyrics and songs. And of course she doesn't focus on boobs and ass,for one she has none of either and second she was a teenager, like Britney, who also started out NOT about boobs and ass, wait and see where it goes now she is over 18.Maybe it won't then again,it usually does.

(oh, and all those raggin' on the dark eyemakeup look, i'm guessing you didn't get laid very much in the grunge-infused, heroin chic 90's. :) hahahaha, kidding...)

Bad guess...

Never was into grunge, and I got laid alot, not much different then now,I just don't think I need to have a girlfriend,I have good female friends instead..What a typical female response when a guy shows his disapproval to one single thing he doesn't like about a girl...wow.

Why does it have to be that everyone likes this chick?

I don't so fu©kin what, why must people attempt to convince otherwise....I think she looks like a teenage tramp and I have never and will never find that black make up around the eyes even remotley attractive.

I've dated maybe one or two girls in over 15 years that actually wear make up,hence my not being attracted to girls who do.

That's basically what I've been trying to say... Why people are stepping up to defend her, I have no idea... It's a simple difference of opinion...

Hahaha......Avril,avril,avril......not a fan myself but it's difficult to not agree with the gals here because basicly it's a sexist world where woman get objectified FAR more than men ever do. Its far more often about hot or not than anything beyond that(yawn). It can be dissappointing to see men that one might think are a bit more enlightened running the obvious route...not that I'm saying anything particular about anyone inparticular.

I suspect that P.P. is like myself in that there are a few past topics fueling the fire here....could be wrong on that. Anyways.........I don't really care that much......at 33 I'm finnally a bit more accustumed to the males world that I live in.....luckily I've got global warming, ozone depletion, nuclear bombs, chemical bombs, modern slavery, war, terrorisom, religeon, child labour, desease, famine, racism, classism and a whole host of crimes against woman and humanity in general to keep me more worried than whether or not some girl is hot or not......

Esau-haha...god no.....but I guess this is where men and woman differ greatly and can't even help it......mens biological instinct is to find a gal to have his seed.....and the healthier..even features...robust this and that set off biological hints that a gal could have the babies....therefore its biologicly more about looks. Where as for woman I guess our biological instinct tells us a man is attractive not by looks but rather by the abbility to support the family(personality)..........but this is all very base in todays world. Though I guess it lends a hint to why the gals aren't always judging guys on looks and why the guys aren't always judging the gals on personality...its still boring though because we're not a bunch of apes anymore...and it would just be nice for a change to see a guy more interested in talent than T & A.hope I'm not digging myself into a hole here. Don't get me wrong... I do love men....I could point out plenty of things that I like about men and plenty of things that I don't like about woman..and visa versa.this just caught my attention this time.....stopping now. Howler shutup. ;)

Dangit....I'd like to delete all my ramblings cause I told myself I wasn't gonna step into this hornets nest...then one beer later here I am rambling in the thick of it..plus I'm a terrible writer who puts her mother who's completing a masters in linguistics to shame...jumpin all over the place...ackskies....outa here :: ::

The problem I have is I don't find Avril talented or attractive... So where does that leave me in this arguement? (And for the record, I have said that plenty of talented girls are hot, some that my friends have seriously questioned in terms of appearance...)

Depends on the guy I guess.I have no idea about her personalilty, just her appearence and music, since I have never met her and thats all there is to go by.But those are both things I do not find appealing about her (music & appearence),this obviously does not mean she is a twit when in comes to intelligence though.

As for women not judging men on appearence, well I have to disagree,as a guy covered in tattoos (60+ of em),I know personally that women do judge men on appearence.

Either way,I hear what your saying though. All good.
