April 3, 2008 – When the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs get underway on Wednesday, April 9, for the first time ever during the NHL post-season, CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada will feature Mandarin language broadcasts throughout each round of the playoffs, available at CBCSports.ca.

Jason Wang, Mandarin play-by-play voice for the 2007 Vancouver Whitecaps’ home broadcasts on webcast radio and Shaw Multicultural Channel, will call one series per round in Mandarin for CBCSports.ca. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Wang speaks fluent Mandarin and English.HNIC

This isn’t Hockey Night’s first foray into multilingual broadcasts. During this year’s Hockey Day in Canada, games were broadcast on CBCSports.ca in Mandarin, Hindi and Cantonese.

Speaking after Hockey Day, Joel Darling, CBC Sports’ director of production, said these broadcasts are a great way of reaching out to new Canadians, people who wouldn’t normally watch a game of hockey. Although, he acknowledged the play-by-play of these games does present its own unique challenges—like explaining a power play, or coming up with a word for puck.

For what it's worth, the folks over at EA Sports have played out the playoffs on NHL 08 and the winner is...the San Jose Sharks in a seven-game final over the Montreal Canadiens.

In first round play (sorry Senators fans), the Penguins take out Ottawa in five, the Flyers beat Washington in seven and the Rangers took out the Devils in seven.

In the West, San Jose beat out Calgary in seven games, Detroit beat Nashville, Colorado took out Minnesota and, in a shocker, Dallas beat defending champion Anaheim in five games.

Good news for all the fans of the teams that lost: the real games are played in big buildings by real players and not by some guy in his mom's basement.

Woohoo ... just had a mini-celebration here in the department at work for the commencement of the playoffs. Downed about 4 free beers in a half hour and won some of the leftover (full case) as a door prize. MMMMMM ... now I just have to make it for another 20mins and I'm outside in the sun on the way home for some ball hockey, more beers, and Round 1 of the playoffs to start.

I love this stat, should make for an interesting post-season:

Four of the starting goaltenders have never strapped on pads in the playoffs - Tim Thomas, Carey Price, Martin Biron and Dan Ellis.

Four others have never won a series - Martin Gerber, Marc-Andre Fleury, Niklas Backstrom and Cristobal Huet.
