  1. Wait just a second. It just occurred to me that Cops is on from 8-9 tonight. Is it okay if I do Earth Hour from 9-10? Or can I just turn off everything but my tv for Earth Hour and turn off the tv right after Cops? I'm looking for some guidance here folks. Here at the house we're tied 1-1 on this issue.
  2. This I find very interesting: doing a random sampling, google.ca and google.dk (denmark) are on board. google.com and google.fr (france) are not.
  3. Between Google, the story on CBC news and now they're discussing it on Quirks and Quarks, well, I'd say it's a success if the goal was awareness.
  4. Google will spread the word like no other.
  5. Excellent point Davey Boy. Excellent post ollie.

  7. Very cool, but I wish we could hear more than 5 seconds of it. Anyone know where we can hear Edison's recording?
  8. The system then gives the new image to a number of other people to determine, with higher confidence, whether the original answer was correct.
  9. Lordy, someone is posting info on the internet that isn't 100% confirmed?!?!? Egad!
  10. But if a computer can't read such a CAPTCHA, how does the system know the correct answer to the puzzle? Here's how: Each new word that cannot be read correctly by OCR is given to a user in conjunction with another word for which the answer is already known. The user is then asked to read both words. If they solve the one for which the answer is known, the system assumes their answer is correct for the new one. The system then gives the new image to a number of other people to determine, with higher confidence, whether the original answer was correct.
  11. One place I stayed in Cuba had a similar feature. Your room key had to be inserted in a slot for power to come to the room. If you weren't in there, no power would be on.
  12. Keep adding drops to the bucket and it will eventually overflow.
  13. As I go to Ticketbastard every day trying for Ringo Starr tickets I've noticed a twist on the security feature they have where you type in the swirly-word. The swirly-words used to be almost words, like "almast" or something. Now there's two words, and they're real words, for example, this time I got "Norris" and "editing". Then there is the following explanatory paragraph: "Digitize Books One Word at a Time By entering the words in the box, you are also helping to digitize books from the Internet Archive and preserve literature that was written before the computer age." Now, how the hell does that work?
  14. I think all this stuff is a great idea, and much like alternative energy sources, it requires a myriad of solutions working together to make it work. Sure turning the lights off an hour a year does little, sure taking reusable bags to the grocery store does little, sure driving a hybrid car does little, but twenty years ago almost nobody was doing any of these things. Nowadays, lots of people are doing these things. It's gotta add up. That said, I lean towards the "it's too late" camp as far as Earth goes, though I still try to keep things from getting worse how and when I can. If a guy has a hundred bullet holes in him a band-aid ain't gonna help. Hell, a thousand band-aids won't help. But I ain't gonna go shoot another hole in him neither.
  15. I'm not sure that every bit helps, but I do agree that it's better than not shutting off everything for an hour.
  16. Elementary Rudiments of Music by Barbara Wharren is dry, but good.
  17. My sources are occasionally unrevealable.
  18. Stevie Wonder is confirmed, Robert Plant, Prince, and Neil Young are out. I forgot to ask about Widespread Panic.
