  1. So if I buy tickets but in the end cannot end up making it to the show, does that mean that I am screwed and out hundreds of dollars because will-call will be the only way to pick up the tix? (IE. Canadians would not be able to re-sell)
  2. This looks kinda cool... REEL FOOD FILM FESTIVAL The Reel Food Film Festival presents 3 evening screenings and a matinee of great food films! Thursday March 12 , 19 & 26 Saint Paul’s University Auditorium, 223 Main Street Doors Open at 6:30pm, films begin at 7pm Admission is free for all films - for those who can afford it a donation of $5 is appreciated. Consider dinner and a movie – The Green Door restaurant (198 Main Street) is the Reel Food Film Festival sponsor and it is located directly across from the University. A great night of good food and food films. Thursday, March 26 Saint Paul's University Auditorium 223 Main Street The Sacred Food Director: Jack Pettibone Riccobono, United States, 2006, 6 minutes The Ojibwe of Northern Minnesota regard their wild rice (Manoomin) as a gift from their Creator. Amidst the voiceover of an ages-old creation story, this wonderful short film observes the traditional hand harvesting and parching techniques of the Ojibwe’s wild rice, and the community’s fight to protect it. Filmmaker Jack Pettibone Riccobono’s The Sacred Food is a thoughtful, quiet meditation on a cultural tradition and food unique to our continent – and its struggle to survive amidst impending attempts by biotech companies to genetically modify it, thus changing it forever. Fried Chicken and Sweet Potato Pie Director: Bailey Barash, United States, 2006, 20 minutes Known as the “Grande Dame of Southern Cooking†Edna Lewis was a tall, commanding woman in both the culinary world, and her everyday life. The granddaughter of freed slaves, she would grow up to be a great chef, culinary ambassador, and caretaker of genuine Southern cooking. Fried Chicken and Sweet Potato Pie is a film tribute to Ms. Lewis, in which filmmaker Bailey Barash presents a loving portrait of the woman that not only inspired a generation of young chefs, but worked to ensure that the traditional folkways of the South would not be forgotten. In the Same Boat Director: Martha Stiegman, Canada, 2007, 40 minutes Shot on Nova Scotia’s legendary Bay of Fundy, Martha Stiegman’s In the Same Boat explores the common ground between indigenous and non-native communities, while showing the very different role fishing plays in both cultures. The film is presented in two short parts, the first a portrait of Terry Farnsworth, the last handliner on the Bay of Fundy. Part two follows the struggle of the Bear River First Nation as they stand up to pressure from the Department of Fisheries to sell their treaty rights for a ticket into the commercial fisheries. This insightful film lets local people tell their own stories and, in the process, provides us with a deep insight into the struggles they face. Once Upon a French Fry Director: Pierre Olivier-François, France, 2006, 52 minutes Pierre Olivier-François’ quirky film Once Upon a French Fry delves into the crazy world of potato and french fry culture, where we learn that (among other things): countries are battling each other to be “home of the french fryâ€; fries have been served in the White House for over 200 years; and that in Japan fries are rumoured to make those who eat them become tall, white and blond! This romp through the history of the common french fry will feed your mind and incite a serious craving in the process. www.justfood.ca
  3. Yeah in Uganda every other store seems to be made out of an empty shipping container.

I am a fan. He also published a book of Christmas themed short stories called Holidays on Ice that I remember laughing my head off to. I have picked up another one of his books called Me Talk Pretty One Day but haven't read it yet.
  5. Don Rooke is an amazing rootsy slide guitarist as well. He has an amazing collection of hard-to-find vintage slide guitars from around the world. His band is called The Henrys and they don't play often at all, should be a treat.
  6. Yeah such a crazy lineup. I'll be traveling from Ottawa for that for sure. I *wish* the Neil Young tribute thing (also part of Luminato) was on this weekend as well.
  7. Anyone heading south-west from Ottawa? Give me a call if you can help me out! 647-746-KEVO. Cheers!

Hmm, looks promising! I just made a quick playlist. Reminds me of Pandora's Box eh.
  9. I would totally download this if only it didn't completely mess up my iTunes library. I imagine it would.
  10. I could have sworn Jason Collett was stalking me last Spring. I go to work at linuxcaffe, there he is. I go to Christie Pits park, look who shows up. I stop in at a cafe in Roncesvalles, look who walks in. I go to a show at the Dakota, there he is again. All within about 10 days! ha.
  11. Judging from Breit's myspace, looks like they're doing Mondays til the end of March then taking some time off to do other gigs. Either that or the shows listings aren't updated!
  12. C'monnn someone get on the download train with me on this.. At this rate its gonna take me a week!
  13. I hope the Spades continue to play Ottawa more than anywhere else! Its been ages.
  14. Ugh, that show was my least favourite Phish experience of all time. I was soaked and freezing and the slow, loonnnng quiet meandering mellow jam going on way up on stage wasn't helping much (I was on the lawn). On the other hand, that Summer '97 show at Darien with the Pranksters stands as one of my best Phish shows. The TAB show at Darien (with Fishman on drums) was also a huge stand-out.
  15. I used to frequent Wally's on Wednesday nights as well.. Best night in town! Here's hoping he gets well soon.
  16. Here are two clips from the 2007 BBC documentary, Hotel California: LA From The Byrds To The Eagles. It features never before seen archive footage with comprehensive interviews from the likes of David Crosby, Graham Nash, JD Souther, Bernie Leadon, Bonnie Raitt, Chris Darrow, Andrew Gold, Mark Volman, Van Dyke Parks, David Geffen and more.
  17. http://news.therecord.com/article/504538 Local blues legend Brown in hospital March 17, 2009 RECORD STAFF KITCHENER Blues legend Mel Brown remains in the intensive care unit at St. Mary's Hospital. The 69-year-old guitarist and recording artist was admitted to hospital on March 1. "Keep your prayers and good thoughts coming, Mel has been in the hospital before and he came out," said Rob Deyman, the head of the Kitchener Blues Festival. For about five years, Brown has needed an oxygen tank because of emphysema. "I understand it is quite serious, but our prayers are with him and Miss Angel," Deyman said. For two decades Brown and his wife Miss Angel have been the leaders of Kitchener's burgeoning blues scene. When Brown was unable to make a show this past Saturday many fans were shocked to learn he was too sick to play. Brown was also scheduled to open for the Mavis Staples this coming Friday at the Gig Theatre in downtown Kitchener.

By the end of the 1970s it was the artistic and industrial hub of the American music industry. 19. Hey all, Pollstar says that the Abrams Brothers are playing a private function in Ottawa this Saturday night (Mar 21). Anyone have any leads on that? They're also playing at St. Brigid's Church the following Saturday (Mar 28). Kev
  20. Good news! I'd like to combine Darien Lake Phish > Ellicottville visit > THE BAND pilgrimage (Midnight Ramble, Big Pink visit, Dankos grave visit) with state park camping wedged in there. Now that's a road trip worth taking!
  21. Thanks Greg! Looking forward to hearing these licks.
  22. Nope, no Can'O or tapers. By the way there's a bunch of new Canadian dates for the Sisters posted on Kevin's myspace: http://www.myspace.com/kevinbreit
