  1. Post it! I find dancing birds hilarious .. the only thing I can think of that comes into the same territory is my half-pug who doesn't really get music, but still tries to put on a show. Muppets sound cool ...
  2. Good point, sir! Although unless things have changed, I think that you are only able to refuse a ballot in certain provinces during provincial elections. In federal elections you may not, and again, not sure how things work in municipal elections.
  3. (note: I believe that quote to be wrong with regards to the potential fine, as I understood it be $5000, not $500) Not exactly sure how this differs between federal elections and municipal, nor how it may differ between municipalities. Elections Canada's mandate is federal. 167(2)(a) reads: That said, I'm all for civil disobedience, and have spoiled a ballot or two in my time. Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke. I do think that it is largely a waste of time. The number of spoiled ballots do not get counted, nor do they get reported. But if it feels good do it.
  4. "Some enlightening stuff here," he says, his lips dripping purple. It is a pretty fun read if you make yourself a promise to take it all lightly. I've never identified as a hippie, but even I took offense to suggestions such as that the culture is but an enduring "teenage fashion fad". From there it gets increasingly provocative -- 'perverted medical science', have they? That's one hell of an allegation, and one that I think gives the sub-culture even maybe a bit too much credit. The very helpful guide providing guidance on how to distinguish between a hippie and a hipster will be quite helpful to many confused readers, I'm sure. I'll admit to only scanning the article, but I came out unconvinced that they ever answered their initial question -- "why do hippies still exist in America". Although perhaps they hadn't set out to actually answer that question, but it is more an exasperated statement that never wanted answering. "Good God, why in the hell are these people still lingering around? It doesn't make any sense to me. And let me tell you everything about hippies that I hate .." "The Phish"? Not entirely inaccurate, I have to admit.
  5. Mostly today is about the gobble gobbles, but it is also national coming out day The violence, bullying and suicide rates have been out of control lately. Let's remain thankful for what we have, and keep working towards something even better.
  6. [color:purple]who in the world would want to work for Minto? Seems like ages ago, miss ya. People, go for it if you are looking for some coin. There are worse people to work for than Ms. Hux and her team, by far.
  7. Actually wearing my Elmdale t-shirt today and saw this thread. Great place .. first (and last!) time I ever ate a pickled egg. I've discovered a few new good acts there, just by virtue of stopping in to see what was going on. Hintonburg rules.
  8. This thread actually brought up a lot of memories. Given that we are well outside the statute of limitations, it ought to be fair to share. Many, many years ago - back when 'phreaking' was actually a term - I used to construct calling card numbers to make long distance calls. Later - and worried about being pegged down - I discovered something interesting. The local Pizza Pizza was running a PBX extender. I could phone them, say 'sorry, wrong number', they would hang up and I would get the double dial tone. From here I could place any call on their dime and have it show up as their number. These were the early days, and there was no commercial ISP yet in place in Canada. However, several universities were connected. A couple of us had found that if you were to connect via modem to the University of Toronto's library computer system and send it a break signal, you would get dropped down to a shell. From the shell, you could telnet, ftp, archie (remember archie?) etc.. This is where I learned Unix, out of necessity. This was long before graphical browsing. Lynx was the browser of choice and Mosaic was just coming on the scene. Since nobody had SLIP/PPP connections at this time, graphical browsing simply wasn't an option. So I would steal Pizza Pizza's phone lines, call in to Toronto, get a hold of the UofT library computers, send a break signal, drop to shell, and from there 'surf the net' (as they used to say). I would often route through multiple machines to obfuscate IP addresses. Eventually, however, I received the call from the RCMP which put the scare of God into me. Stop it, right now, or serious shit is going to happen. Not much later, the first commercial ISP opened in Toronto and I could actually trade money for internet access. Imagine! I didn't have to do anything unsavory - I could just dish out a couple dimes and it would all be on the up and up. Phenomenal. Then SLIP/PPP, Netscape, oh how the story goes. Bottom line -- I'd forgotten what a little punk I was in my pre-pubescent days, but there are other little pre-pubescent punks out there right now. Don't use WEP. Save yourself.
  9. Bouche - you mentioned that you are using 64 bit encryption, but did not specify WEP or WPA(2). WEP is broken and while not entirely trivial to crack, it is not a significant feat to do so. (There is even software available to do this for you, although to my mind that is sort of like having software solve your Sudoku puzzle or daily jumble for you ... where is the fun and adventure?) If you are using 64 bit WEP, I would switch to WPA or WPA2. At the very least, step it up to 128 bit and change your network password immediately. If your router does not support either, I would spend the couple of bucks to get a new router. I think that you are correct that if it were some sort of malware infection, you would probably be seeing more upstream traffic than downstream (unless your system has been sufficiently zombied that it is being stocked up as preparation to act as a warez server at a later date .. unlikely) Also possible that the monitoring software is borked, but I'd certainly check your router settings as the first order of business. Using 64 bit WEP is sort of like setting your password to '1234' - I could piggyback off your network if I was your neighbour with very little effort.
  10. I use Macamp (pretty much a Winamp clone, even though it is an abandoned project) on the macbook and Winamp on Windows machines over iTunes for the same reasons already mentioned (iTunes is bloated, the interface can be a bit freaky, often runs slow, memory hog, etc..) Also, I like to organize my music by file folders and iTunes isn't intuitive in this regard. Additionally there is the problem that iTunes wants to copy and duplicate all of my content, which is just a waste of space. The software just never jived with me. The only time I've turned to it is to populate an iPod and even then I don't use the sync mode. For videos, I've always used mplayer which handles everything that I can throw at it, is free and open source, and cross-platform. I don't use anti-virus software, but I like Lavasoft's ad-aware and "Spybot Search & Destroy" for spyware on Windows boxes. For browsers I use them all for work-related reasons, but for personal browsing I'm still stuck on Firefox. It drives me nuts sometimes, can get slow with lots of tabs left open, leak memory, etc.., but I likes me my plugins. Runner-up is tied between Safari and Chrome. IDE: IDEs are for pansies. Learn to use a decent text editor. Spreadsheets, word docs, etc: OpenOffice / NeoOffice. But often I'll just fire up a Google doc unless it is something special. Actually, I'm amazed by how little software is actually needed these days -- many of the tasks that used to require standalone applications are now so easily handled through web apps.

    Website advice

Dr. J -- I couldn't tell by your post whether you have already built the bulk of the main site or whether you haven't started. If you have started, what platform did you use to build it or is it all handcoded HTML? The answer to this question will make a big difference towards the answer.
  12. QOTDs tend not to get much response on a Sunday (most people visit this site while at work, I am sure), but it is a rainy Sunday evening and it seemed appropriate. What's your favourite horror movie?
  13. I cut my ties with Primus. They have f*cked me over more times than I can count, and the delays (even when Bell wasn't involved) cost me contracts. Fuck 'em.
  14. Wow that was a trip -- early morning for me and at 6am-ish or thereabouts and with barely half a coffee in my belly, I suddenly hear Northern Wish's voice -- look up and see his face on my television (CTV local news) talking Folk Fest. Sad that I missed the Hidden Cameras, but duty called. How was it? One time, long ago, driving to a festival with Joel Gibb of HC where we were camping out at his aunt's place, my girlfriend at the time stuck a big wad of gum in his hair because he had said something very not nice. He had a total meltdown. This was before he came out - I always wonder if he would be cooler to hang with now that he has gotten that out of the way. The last interview I saw with him, he seemed much less dickish then the guy I knew in my teenage years.
  15. Last I heard, the dude had totally lost his shit. It's all really kind of sad.
  16. WOW! Where the heck have you been? We need to start a 'whatever happened to ..." thread.
  17. Side-stepping Cranky-Booche for a moment, I've read this thread with interest. I've never seen an episode of Lost and always said that I would wait till it was over with and see if people were satisfied that it all came together. I'd just heard so many complaints about a potentially directionless writing staff. After reading this thread, I think I'll give it a go from the first episode. I don't mind the side discussion about other US cable shows. But I do enjoy it when Booche's gears start to grind.
  18. In a far-ranging decision, the court further found that both downloading music and putting it in a shared folder available to other people online appeared to be legal in Canada. Downloading a song for personal use is not an infringement. Placing a song in an on-line music-sharing directory is not considered distribution. Unless this has been overturned on appeal.
