  1. Nels was fucking sick at Massey Hall, Luther is tasteful as shit live for a blues player and few except Derek And Warren can compete with him on slide.
  2. cuff the cuke - cuff the duke Black Keys - Thickfreakness
  3. So, Sloan show in the snow was lots of fun last night. Andrew got out from behind the kit about mid way through the show. Played 2 songs that had the crowd yawning and wondering that the hell had just happened. The third song was a short punk tune sung by Patrick, and being that it was actually not bad, had me thinking it may have been penned by him but played with the Andrew-on-guitar line up. The next song was a mid-tempo snoozer and as usual, sung poorly and with little presence by Andrew. As Sloan returned to their "traditional" line up and kicked off one of many recognizable gems, the crowd awoke from the mid-set slumber. All in all, a good Sloan show, especially considering they played approx. an hour and twenty minutes. (TimmyB I'm sure can give a correct time on that) I found they mixed the set list up just enough to keep the crowd with them (except during the Andrew Scott Experience) by playing many of the hits and enough of the new material to keep it interesting. As with the last show I saw, they have added a keys player to the line up. Though it almost seems as though he plays more tamborine than keys (not a bad thing anyway) the overall sound of the band seems generally improved with keys. The snow and cold were manageable, and the crowd thinned out a bit towards the end so it was easy to move up and get as close to the stage as you wanted.
  4. ok chill bra. And I was at the gig, and yes, I'm not shitting you, Andrew got out from behind the kit and played 2 songs. Then went back to drums. Then again, several songs later, came back out from behind the kit and proceeded to play at least 4 or more songs on guitar, in a row, and they all sucked the bag. I actually did start counting cause I was hoping it would stop, but they just kept letting him play. Chris is a decent drummer, and Jay can play bass fine, but what maked the Sloan "sound" or what makes them unique, I think, is their traditional line up. It truly has the feel and sound of a completely different band, live, when they switch up instruments. They did break up once albeit very briefly. In an interview with Exclaim from a few years ago (I'm not going to dig up right now), Jay is asked what his favorite and least favorite moments have been with the band. His reply was least fav: when Sloan broke up or was on the verge of breaking up, and fav: when Slaon got back together or didn't break up. 80's crap I wish I was Joe Strummer and a guitar player Andrew Scott shit-rock. And just for you, I will count very diligently how many songs he will unfortunately play tonight.
  5. Just thought I'd post this. Grand Theft Bus @ The Rivoli March 16th I have no clue how much but it doesn't matter cause they are so damn worth every fuckin penny. Best jam-rock-alt whatever from east coast. They rule and thanks to whoever brought them back to TO. It's been too long. Now where the hell did I leave those mushrooms.....
  6. Did anyone hit the last Toronto show, the "Kool Haus" anniversary show? It was great except for the fact Sloan should stop letting Andrew Scott get out from behind the set. AD, I know you will strongly disagree with me, and I respect that opinion, but holy crap it's like two different bands up there and guess which one sucks the bag? The one where they let the drummer come up and get his 80's crap rock ya-ya's off. His songs are weak weak weak compared to the rest of Sloans material. His drumming, however, is amazing in the context. Very unique and interesting style and he would be impossible to replace on the skins. Chris Murphey is by far, the best songwriter of the bunch, though the rest (minues Andrew) are very good as well. I have a theory about Sloan: back whenever the band went through their "breakup" , Andrew Scott demanded that if he were to stay with the band, they would have to allow him the chance to play a few tunes on guitar. I realize that Sloan has long fostered the instrument swith up hour, but to do it live and professionally is lame. As evidence, I site the last Sloan show I saw where Andrew did at least 6 or 7 tunes and bored the shit out of the audience.
  7. yes yes, Umphreys in To finally, yes yes!
  8. He's just stopped trying to do anything artistically new for too long. I was at the last show here in TO and Jaydawg was right, he played almost as much guitar (not what I paid for) as he did pedal steel. The last show before that I saw at the Phoenix was fuckin terrible. A night of shitty covers with no energy. He needs to write better new songs and tour less. (and I need to learn to spell better.) Also, no band or artist ever sounds very good on TV, and certainly not outside the fuckin arena playin to people who probably have no clue who he is. Besides, that venue and idea (intro the All-star game) would not have been the ideal setting for some RR shred. (though it would have been avast improvment). I think maybe they were going for the RR pump us up with your high octane gospel rock.
  9. fuck I wish (for that and sooo may reasons) I still lived in Montreal
  10. Maaaannnnnnnn...... I have been waiting since that way-too-short set at Big Summer Classic for UM to have their own show here in Toronto. I remember hearing somewhere from someone that they played Lee's Palace here in TO waaaayyy back in the early days, but I have never seen (or read) that confirmed. Anyway, considering the bands from the states that do make it up here, we should all be happy Umphrey's are finally coming for their own show. It's been too long a wait for such and increidble fucking awesome band to play here. IMO - Umphrey's McGee, as a band, do shit that no other group out there can do. I have never heard a group play so tight; do so many time, key, and rhythm shifts, improvise using hand signals. Group imrov like that exists in many forms, but delivered so well is a rare mother-fuckin treat. Umphreys fucking rocks, thank you for whoever finally brought them to TO. Its about fuckin time.
  11. I watched that Letterman interview when it was on TV originally, I'm watching and thinking, why the fuck would Letterman want O'Reilly on his show? Or who put him up to that (the network?)? Anyway, when Letterman says, "well, I think most of what you say is crap." To his O'Reilly's face, I turned to someone who was with me, and asked, did I just hear that right> I don;t know if I've ever loved or been more proud of Letterman for finally just telling O'Reilly, on air, that he sucks balls (figuratively).
  12. Holy shit Holy shit Holy shit I think I just about shat myself there. FUCKIN EH THERE IS A FUCKIN GOD(S) AFTER ALL!!! MARKY (and/or all promoters involved) THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! 15. So I happen to be reading this weeks NOW new albums for 2007 and they mention how the Fire have set up this 1-866-NEON BIBLE toll free number to hear songs from the new record. So I try and sure enough it works. The website http://www.neonbible.com/ didn't seem to do much other than beep at me, but the message at the toll free number is cool. Dial ext. 7777 for a song, and try pressing different numbers to get weird different stuff. Other songs, I heard at least 2 full length (?) songs from the new record. Then when I pressed 1 and it hung up on me. Also, you can leave a message that will be sent to the "head office". I asked Arcade Fire to please come play shows in Toronto and tour lots and lots. Here's the NOW thing: THE ARCADE FIRE TITLE Neon Bible (Merge) RELEASE DATE March/April ADVANCE BUZZ More epic orchestral anthems of hope and hopelessness from the kids who ignited international hype for the Montreal scene. Now that they count David Bowie and David Byrne among their legions of fans and can sell out a five-night stand in London in a matter of minutes, the heat is on the Montreal seven-(plus)-piece indie heroes to release a worthy follow-up to 04's mega-breakout, Funeral. The Arcade Fire attempted to sate jonesing fans by setting up a curious toll-free number (1-866-NEON-BIBLE ext 7777), where you can hear a fuzzy sneak preview of upcoming album track Intervention. The pipe organ core and hymn-like repetition of the tune suggest that the process of recording in a church in rural Quebec (the band purchased the building to turn into a studio) may have brought the Fire flock even closer to their ecclesiastical roots, though Cold Wind, the song penned for Six Feet Under that (fingers crossed) will hopefully turn up on Neon Bible, hews closer to the restrained shimmery starkness of Funeral's Haiti. At any rate, it's certain to be an arena-sized, multi-instrumental spectacular
  16. Did anyone other than myself get tickets for this years Allmans Beacon run? Went on sale Sat. morning, and I actually managed to get floors for 2 shows. sweet. GA and Friends has never done it for me. peace.
  17. read shakey and you'll get the full story about them
  18. Yeah - my buddies went lasy night, James's (guitarist for Kittens) mentor and one of his teachers was Breit and that Murray guy asked the kittens to close the show, even though it was Murrays CD release show (don't ask why, I don't know) So I think that James asked Breit and folk to open for the Murray guy (who was the "headliner") and the kittens played last. Apparently kittens played a good 12 song set. peace.
  19. hello - Tom Petty - Highway Companion Derek Trucks - Songlines Umphrey's McGee- Safety in Numbers Gov't Mule - High and Mighty just covering some jamband bases (minus Petty)
  20. ah war profiteering.
  21. first, they play the front room, second, there's no cover, its Pay What You Can (pass the Pitcher at set break, most give $5). First set is usually longer. Dima: http://www.jambands.ca/sanctuary/showtopic.php?tid/223359/post/247987/hl/Run+with+the+kittens/#247987 your opinion may matter more, but if you had listened to mine back in July of 2005 you may have had all that much more time to enjoy them. peace.
  22. I've mentioned them before months ago and they've been doing the Cameron House for over 2 years. They also now play another gig on Tuesdays at the Drake Hotel from 7-9 PM, then the Cameron from 10 - 1 AM. They also play at other various venues throughout the city.
